IPv6 Not Working on Your Server? A Complete Troubleshooting Guide

A practical IPv6 server troubleshooting runbook: verify enablement, addresses, routes, peers, firewalls, DNS and upstream prefix delegation without resorting to blanket protocol disabling.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your server has an IPv6 address but cannot reach another network, troubleshoot outward through the stack: confirm IPv6 is enabled, verify the interface received a usable global or unique-local address, inspect neighbor discovery and routes, test peers in increasing distance, and then check forwarding, firewalls, DNS and the upstream provider. A fe80::/10 link-local address by itself does not provide Internet connectivity.

What “IPv6 is not working” can mean

IPv6 failures occur at different layers, and the right repair depends on which layer fails. A server may have a correctly configured address but no default route; it may have a route but a firewall that blocks ICMPv6; or the network may work while an application listens only on IPv4. Separate these cases before changing configuration.

Observed symptom Most likely scope First evidence to collect
No IPv6 address appears Kernel, adapter binding, autoconfiguration, DHCPv6, router advertisements or static assignment IPv6 enablement settings and interface addresses
Only a fe80:: address appears Link-local operation is present, but routed addressing is missing Router advertisements, DHCPv6, delegated prefix and VLAN membership
Local IPv6 peer fails Interface, neighbor discovery, prefix, VLAN or local firewall Neighbor cache, connected route and an ICMPv6 test to a peer
Local peer works but public destinations fail Default route, upstream router, provider delegation or egress filtering Routing table and an IPv6 trace
Ping succeeds but a service fails DNS choice, service binding, port filtering or application policy AAAA lookup, listening sockets and a port-specific test

Keep the test target and the network layer explicit. A successful link-local ping proves only that the local link and neighbor discovery work; it does not prove that the server can reach the Internet.

1. Confirm that IPv6 is enabled

Linux: check the kernel and per-interface controls

Linux can disable IPv6 globally at module level or independently on interfaces. The kernel’s IPv6 module parameter disable=1 disables all IPv6 functionality, prevents IPv6 addresses and sockets from being used, and requires a reboot before IPv6 can be re-enabled. Check the parameter and the runtime controls before investigating routes:

cat /sys/module/ipv6/parameters/disable
for f in /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/*/disable_ipv6; do
  printf '%s: ' "$f"; cat "$f"
done
for f in /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/*/autoconf; do
  printf '%s: ' "$f"; cat "$f"
done

A value of 1 in disable_ipv6 turns IPv6 off for that interface. Autoconfiguration controls whether the interface accepts automatically generated addresses from router advertisements. When autoconfiguration is 0, the kernel leaves only loopback and link-local addressing unless you assign another address manually. Check both all and the specific interface, because a per-interface setting can override what you expect from a global setting.

Use the interface name shown by ip link (for example, ens3 or eth0) and inspect its addresses:

ip link
ip -6 addr show dev ens3

Do not enable forwarding merely to make a single server reach the Internet. Forwarding is required when the machine routes packets between interfaces; it is not a prerequisite for ordinary host traffic.

Windows Server: verify the binding without removing IPv6

Modern Windows treats IPv6 as a mandatory component. Microsoft advises against disabling IPv6, unbinding it from adapters, or changing the DisabledComponents registry value casually because Windows components can fail when the protocol is removed.

Check that the adapter has an IPv6 binding and that it is up:

The binding should be enabled on the adapter carrying the server’s traffic. If policy or a hardening script disabled it, restore the binding through your normal change process rather than editing the registry as a first-line test. Record the existing state so a temporary diagnostic change can be reversed exactly.

2. Verify that the interface received the right kind of address

Understand the address classes

  • Link-local (fe80::/10): created for communication on the local link. It requires an interface zone when used in many commands and is not evidence of Internet-routed IPv6.
  • Global unicast: the provider- or organization-routed address normally used for Internet connectivity.
  • Unique-local: an internally routed address range for private networks. It can work across your own routed network but is not, by itself, a public Internet address.

On Linux, inspect scope and lifetimes with:

ip -6 addr show

On Windows, use:

Get-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv6

Look for the prefix your network plan says the server should have. If you see only a link-local address, the server has not obtained the intended routed prefix. Check, in this order:

  1. Whether the interface is attached to the correct VLAN or virtual switch.
  2. Whether router advertisements reach the interface and are accepted.
  3. Whether DHCPv6 is required for addresses or other configuration in this network.
  4. Whether a static address, prefix length and gateway were entered correctly.
  5. Whether the provider delegated a prefix to the correct customer interface or virtual network.

OpenWrt’s IPv6 troubleshooting guidance treats failure to obtain an IPv6 address as a primary fault class. The same distinction applies to a server: an address display is not enough; it must be the expected scope and prefix.

3. Inspect routes before changing applications

Linux routing and forwarding

Display the complete IPv6 address and route state:

ip -6 addr
ip -6 route
ip -6 neigh

You should see a connected route for the local prefix and, for Internet-bound traffic, a usable default route (often shown as default via ...). If the connected route is missing, the address or prefix length is wrong. If the connected route exists but the default route is missing, the server cannot send traffic beyond the local network.

When the host routes between interfaces, inspect forwarding controls:

sysctl net.ipv6.conf.all.forwarding
sysctl net.ipv6.conf.default.forwarding
for f in /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/*/forwarding; do
  printf '%s: ' "$f"; cat "$f"
done

Enable forwarding only on a machine intentionally acting as a router, and apply the change through the distribution’s persistent configuration. On a normal single-interface application server, changing forwarding is not a substitute for a missing default route.

Windows route inspection

Windows provides several equivalent views:

route print -6
netstat -r -6
netsh interface ipv6 show routes

Verify a route for the local subnet and an appropriate default route. Also inspect the interface index and state:

netsh interface ipv6 show interface

Microsoft’s Windows Server networking guidance also documents route management, neighbor-cache inspection and destination-cache inspection. Use those views when a route appears present but traffic still fails; a stale neighbor entry or destination decision can explain behavior that the static route table alone does not.

4. Test from the server outward

Run tests in increasing scope. Stop at the first failed layer; that boundary tells you where to concentrate the next checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Loopback: test ::1. A failure points to a local IPv6 stack or application problem.
  2. Link-local peer: test a known device on the same link. On Linux, include the interface zone, for example ping -6 fe80::1%ens3. On Windows, use the interface index, such as ping -6 fe80::1%12. A failure implicates the interface, neighbor discovery, VLAN or local firewall.
  3. Global or unique-local peer: test a reachable router or server on the same routed network. Failure points to addressing, prefix advertisement, routing on the LAN or a LAN firewall.
  4. External IPv6 destination: use a known IPv6-only address or hostname after local tests succeed. Failure now points to the default route, upstream router, provider delegation or egress filtering.

Use a trace to identify the first hop that stops responding. On Windows, tracert -6 destination traces IPv6; on Linux, use the IPv6 mode of your installed trace utility, such as traceroute -6 destination. A nonresponsive hop does not always mean that hop is broken—routers may rate-limit or filter trace probes—so compare the point of failure with the route table and firewall logs.

Local peer works; external destination fails Routed egress problem Default route, upstream router, provider prefix and egress policy

5. Check firewalls at every layer

IPv6 depends on ICMPv6 for neighbor discovery and path operation. A policy that blocks all ICMP traffic, or that allows IPv4 but omits IPv6 rules, can make a correctly addressed server appear offline. Review:

  • The host firewall’s IPv6 rules, including ICMPv6 neighbor-discovery and error traffic.
  • Cloud security groups, hypervisor filters and upstream edge-firewall rules.
  • Egress rules as well as inbound rules; outbound IPv6 is often restricted independently.
  • Whether Windows Defender Firewall profile and rule-merging settings allow the rule you created to apply.

For a controlled diagnostic, temporarily narrow the test to a trusted peer and record the exact rule change. Restore the firewall immediately after the test and create a least-privilege IPv6 rule for the required protocol, source, destination and port. A blanket firewall disable is not a repair and can hide the actual missing ICMPv6 or service rule.

6. Separate DNS and address selection from connectivity

A hostname can return both an A record and an AAAA record. Test the AAAA destination directly so a successful IPv4 connection does not mask an IPv6 failure. On Linux, query the records with your DNS utility; on Windows, use Resolve-DnsName host.example and inspect the AAAA answer.

Modern Windows follows RFC 3484-style address-selection behavior and normally favors IPv6 global-unicast addresses when they are usable. If a client repeatedly chooses IPv4, inspect address-selection and prefix-policy settings before declaring DNS broken. Conversely, if the AAAA record points to an address that is no longer assigned, DNS is the fault even though the server’s local IPv6 route is healthy.

When ping to the AAAA address succeeds but the service does not, check whether the daemon listens on the IPv6 wildcard or the specific IPv6 address, whether the port is allowed in the IPv6 firewall, and whether the application intentionally prefers or rejects one address family.

7. Investigate upstream routing and provider delegation

If the server has the expected address and local peers work but no external destination is reachable, the fault is usually beyond the host. Confirm with the network or hosting provider:

  • The delegated prefix and prefix length assigned to the server, VLAN or virtual network.
  • The IPv6 next-hop address and whether the provider uses a special on-link gateway model.
  • Whether router advertisements are expected, or whether the provider requires static configuration or DHCPv6.
  • Whether the provider’s edge firewall permits IPv6 egress and return traffic.
  • Whether a route back to the server’s prefix exists upstream.

Compare the provider’s documented values with the server’s actual connected and default routes. A syntactically valid address paired with the wrong prefix length can install an incorrect connected route and send traffic to the wrong neighbor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Choose a remediation by scope and reversibility

Remedy Scope When it is justified Risk and evidence required
Enable IPv6 or autoconfiguration on one interface Single interface The interface is disabled or ignores router advertisements Low to moderate; confirm the expected address appears afterward
Correct a static address, prefix or default route Single host The provider supplied values do not match the local route table Moderate; preserve the old configuration and verify local and external tests
Enable forwarding Router host and attached networks The machine intentionally routes between interfaces High if accidental; verify both interfaces and firewall policy
Permit required IPv6 and ICMPv6 traffic Host, LAN or upstream firewall Addresses and routes are correct but probes or services are filtered Moderate; make a narrow rule and confirm logs
Fix prefix delegation or upstream routing LAN or provider No usable prefix/default route arrives at the server Requires network-owner evidence such as advertisements, route tables or traces
Prefer IPv4 temporarily Windows address selection An operational requirement exists while IPv6 is repaired Prefer a reversible prefix-policy change; do not remove IPv6 bindings

Classify every proposed change by four questions: does it affect one interface, the host, the LAN or the upstream; can it be reversed at runtime; which layer does it change; and what observation proves that layer is the cause? This prevents a firewall change from being used to compensate for a missing route, or a registry change from hiding a provider problem.

9. Why disabling IPv6 is usually the wrong fix on Windows

Microsoft’s advanced IPv6 guidance states: “We don’t recommend that you disable IPv6 or IPv6 components or unbind IPv6 from interfaces.” The reason is operational, not cosmetic: current Windows components may assume IPv6 is available, and removing it can break dependent features.

If the immediate goal is to prefer IPv4 while a network issue is being resolved, Microsoft documents using prefix-policy preference instead of disabling IPv6 outright. The documented DisabledComponents value 0x20 prefers IPv4 over IPv6 without removing the protocol. Treat registry changes as managed configuration, document the previous value and restart only when the platform requires it.

Microsoft also documents that disabling IPv6 through the registry can break WSL networking. If disabling is unavoidable for a narrowly defined environment, remove protocol bindings with Disable-NetAdapterBinding under a tested change plan, and verify every dependent workload afterward. Do not use this as a generic troubleshooting shortcut.

10. A compact runbook for incident response

  1. Capture the interface name, IPv6 addresses, prefix lengths and timestamps.
  2. Confirm Linux module and sysctl state, or Windows adapter binding and interface state.
  3. Record the neighbor cache and IPv6 route table, including the default route.
  4. Run loopback, link-local, local routed-peer and external tests in that order.
  5. Run an IPv6 trace from the server and save the output.
  6. Review host, LAN, cloud and provider firewall rules, including ICMPv6.
  7. Query AAAA records and test the service by IPv6 address and port.
  8. Escalate with the collected address, route, neighbor, trace and firewall evidence if the prefix or gateway is missing upstream.

After a repair, repeat every test rather than relying on one successful ping. Confirm that the configuration survives the next interface restart or reboot, that the service listens on the intended IPv6 address, and that firewall policy remains enabled.

Bottom line

IPv6 troubleshooting is a progression from capability to reachability: enabled stack, correct address, neighbor discovery, connected and default routes, forwarding where appropriate, permitted ICMPv6 and service traffic, then DNS and application behavior. A link-local address proves only local IPv6 presence. If the server never receives a usable prefix or default route, the durable fix is in router advertisements, DHCPv6, static assignment, VLAN configuration or the upstream provider—not in the application and not in disabling IPv6.
