How to Buff Other Players in 7 Days to Die (Vanilla Multiplayer Guide)

In vanilla multiplayer, the normal way to buff teammates is the Intellect perk Charismatic Nature. It gives the support player a passive aura that affects nearby teammates. Put points into Intellect, unlock Charismatic Nature, and stay with the group during combat. The available perk documentation does not establish an exact aura radius or a rank-by-rank numerical bonus, so any guide claiming a precise distance or percentage should be treated cautiously.

Food and drinks normally affect the player who consumes them; handing another player a coffee, meal, or drink does not automatically transfer your active status effect. If you administer a server and have the required permissions, you can target a specific player with the console command buffplayer. That is an administrator function, not a regular survival perk.

The three ways to affect another player

There are three different mechanics that players often call a buff. They should not be confused:

  • Charismatic Nature: a vanilla multiplayer support perk that provides a passive effect to teammates near the player who has it.
  • Consumables: food and drinks apply their positive or negative status effects to the person who eats or drinks them. They are normally self-applied.
  • Administrator commands: a server administrator can apply a named buff directly to a selected player by using the console.

Your choice depends on your role. A normal survival player should use Charismatic Nature and coordinate positioning. A server administrator can use buffplayer when direct targeting is intentional and permitted by the server rules.

Charismatic Nature: the ordinary multiplayer method

What the perk does

The 2026 perk guide describes Charismatic Nature as a multiplayer-only buff aura that provides a passive buff to nearby teammates. It also identifies the perk as the only support perk in vanilla 7 Days to Die. The practical result is a support role: one player invests in Intellect, remains close to the party, and lets the aura benefit allies while the group explores, gathers resources, or fights.

The effect is proximity-based. It is not a one-time cast that permanently marks a friend, and it is not a menu action that lets you select a distant party member. If the support player leaves the group, the aura may no longer reach everyone who needs it.

What is not officially established

The available documentation does not verify a precise radius, the exact numerical bonus at each perk rank, or a universal duration after a teammate leaves the area. Do not build a plan around an unverified number of blocks, a claimed percentage, or a specific rank table. The reliable instruction is to keep the support player near the teammates being supported and verify behavior in the current game build.

How to build the support player

  1. Choose the support role early. Agree that one player will prioritize Intellect and Charismatic Nature instead of scattering the first points across unrelated combat perks. This creates a clear support identity without claiming that it is the only viable character build.
  2. Spend the required points in Intellect. Open the Intellect progression path and invest enough points to make Charismatic Nature available. The exact point cost and menu presentation can change with game updates, so follow the values shown in your current build.
  3. Unlock Charismatic Nature. Select the perk once its in-game requirements are met. The perk is the documented vanilla route for a teammate-support aura.
  4. Keep the support player with the party. During a dangerous expedition or blood-moon preparation, position the support player alongside the people who need the effect rather than sending that player to a distant task.
  5. Check the result in a safe situation. Test the setup before relying on it in a difficult fight. Have players move apart and regroup while watching their status indicators or other visible changes. This confirms that the current build is recognizing the aura without assuming a radius that has not been documented.

A practical seven-day setup plan

The following schedule is a planning framework for a new multiplayer world. It is not an official progression timetable; adjust it to your server settings, difficulty, and the number of players.

Day Objective Actions Checkpoint
1 Establish multiplayer access Create or join the world and confirm that the server is reachable. Multiplayer visibility can be configured for options such as Friends Only or Public. Every intended teammate can join and communicate.
2 Assign the support role Choose the player who will prioritize Intellect and explain that Charismatic Nature works for nearby teammates. The group knows who should stay with the party during important fights.
3 Prepare the Intellect path Use available skill points toward Intellect and inspect the current requirements shown for Charismatic Nature. The support player can identify what remains before unlocking the perk.
4 Unlock the aura Purchase Charismatic Nature when its in-game requirements are satisfied. The perk appears as active in the character or perk interface.
5 Test proximity Meet in a safe location. Have the support player move away and then return while teammates watch for the aura-related status change. The party understands that the effect depends on being nearby, without relying on an undocumented distance.
6 Coordinate consumables Give each player the food or drink that player intends to use, and have the recipient consume it personally. No one expects a handed-over item to transfer the giver’s active buff.
7 Use the setup in a real activity Keep the support player with the group during a mission, resource run, or defense. Recheck positioning whenever the party splits. The team has a repeatable routine for keeping the aura with the players who need it.

Keeping the aura useful during play

Stay together when the effect matters

Plan movement around the support player. During a building project, the support player can work in the same area as the main crew. During an expedition, avoid sending the support character far ahead to scout while expecting the aura to continue helping the rest of the party. If the team must split, decide which group receives the support and regroup when the risk is highest.

Do not treat the perk as a replacement for combat preparation

Charismatic Nature is a support tool, not a guarantee that a group can ignore weapons, armor, healing, stamina management, or defensive construction. Each player should still prepare for the activity’s normal hazards. The aura is most useful when it is integrated into an otherwise sensible team plan.

Account for updates and overhaul mods

Perk names, effects, requirements, and proximity behavior can change between game versions. Overhaul modifications may replace the vanilla Intellect tree or alter support mechanics entirely. Before planning a long-term character around this perk, open the current in-game perk description and test it on the server where you intend to play.

Food and drinks: what you can and cannot transfer

Consumables normally buff the consumer

The status-effect reference describes food and drink as sources of positive or negative effects for the player who uses them. If you eat or drink an item, expect its effect to apply to your own character. Giving the item to a teammate gives that teammate an item to consume; it does not, by itself, move your already-active status effect onto the other player.

Use a simple hand-off procedure

  1. Give the item to the teammate who needs it.
  2. Tell that player what the item is intended to do and whether it may carry a negative effect as well.
  3. Have the teammate consume it personally.
  4. Allow time for the recipient’s status display to update before judging the result.

Treat any claim that a particular food or drink transfers an effect to another player as mod-specific or version-specific unless the item documentation for your build explicitly says otherwise.

Multiple effects can coexist

Several status effects may be active at the same time. Their duration, interaction, and stacking behavior are effect-specific, so do not assume that two similar effects will add together, refresh each other, or cancel each other. Read the current description and observe the status display when combining consumables with the Charismatic Nature aura.

Applying a buff directly with the administrator console

Who should use this method

buffplayer is intended for an administrator or another operator who has the server permission to run console commands. It is useful for testing, moderation, event setup, or deliberate administrative support. It is not required for ordinary cooperative survival, and using it on a server without the host’s approval can undermine the rules or progression of that world.

Find the target player

Use the console command lpi to list player information and identify the intended target. The command reference allows a player name, entity ID, or Steam ID in the target position. IDs are often safer than a partially typed or duplicated display name, especially on a busy server.

Run the command

The documented syntax is:

buffplayer <name / entity id / steam id> <buff name>

  1. Open the game console using the key or binding configured for your platform.
  2. Run lpi and copy the target player’s name or ID exactly as the server reports it.
  3. Identify a valid buff name from the game’s buffs.xml file. The command requires the internal name, not a casual description invented by a player.
  4. Replace the target and buff placeholders in the syntax, then submit the command.
  5. Ask the player to check the status display and confirm whether the effect appeared.

Because the command applies a named effect, its duration and behavior come from that effect’s definition. The command reference does not make every buff permanent, nor does it imply that an administrator can use an arbitrary English phrase as the buff name.

Common command failures

  • Unknown player: the name may be misspelled, the player may have disconnected, or the wrong identifier may have been used. Run lpi again and target the current listing.
  • Unknown buff: check buffs.xml for the valid internal name. A visible status label and an internal XML name are not necessarily identical.
  • Permission denied: the account does not have the administrator capability needed for console operations. Ask the server owner to grant the appropriate permission or apply the effect.
  • No visible change: the selected effect may be subtle, temporary, conditional, or blocked by another game state. Verify the target, the exact name, and the effect definition before repeating the command.
  • Different behavior after an update: patch changes or mods may alter command permissions, names, or effect definitions. Recheck the current build’s files and command reference.

Comparing the available approaches

Approach Ordinary-player access Targeting Duration model Best use Main limitation
Charismatic Nature Yes, after investing in Intellect and unlocking the perk Nearby teammates within the aura Based on being close to the support player; exact radius and rank bonuses are not verified Normal cooperative survival Players who move away may no longer receive the proximity effect
Food or drink Yes, for any player who can use the item The player who consumes it Defined by the individual status effect Personal preparation before an activity Handing over an item does not automatically transfer the giver’s active effect
buffplayer No; requires administrator permission A named player, entity ID, or Steam ID Defined by the selected buff Administration, testing, and controlled events Requires a valid internal buff name and server authority

Troubleshooting a teammate who is not receiving the buff

The support player has the perk, but nothing appears to happen

First confirm that Charismatic Nature is actually unlocked in the current character. Next, place the players together in a safe location and test movement. The documented effect is for nearby teammates, not a server-wide party bonus. If the result still differs from the perk description, check whether the server is running a mod or a game version with changed perk behavior.

The party is spread across several locations

Choose which group needs support most and keep the support player with that group. There is no verified radius that allows a reliable long-distance workaround. A scheduled regroup before combat is safer than assuming the aura reaches across a settlement or quest area.

A teammate asks you to give them your food buff

Give the teammate the item instead and have that player consume it. The documented consumable behavior applies the effect to the user. Only use a mod or an administrator command if that system explicitly provides cross-player application.

An administrator command works on one server but not another

Compare permissions, game versions, and installed mods. Confirm the exact target identifier with lpi and the exact internal effect name in buffs.xml. A command that is valid in one configuration may be unavailable or renamed in another.

Rules for a reliable support setup

  • Use Charismatic Nature for ordinary vanilla teammate support.
  • Keep the support player physically close to the allies who need the aura.
  • Do not publish or rely on an exact radius or rank bonus unless the current build documents it.
  • Have each player consume their own food and drinks.
  • Use lpi and then buffplayer only when you have legitimate administrator permission.
  • Read valid buff names from buffs.xml rather than guessing.
  • Recheck perk and command behavior after major updates or when using an overhaul mod.
