IPv6 is not inherently slower: the key is to find out whether the delay is in connection setup, the established route, or packet-size handling before you disable IPv6 or replace hardware.
What “slower” looks like matters
A page that pauses before loading, a game with higher ping, and a download that stalls are different symptoms. A browser may take extra time to establish a connection and then work normally; a poor route may instead add latency throughout a session. Packet loss or a Path MTU Discovery problem can make larger transfers hang while small requests succeed.

Compare IPv4 and IPv6 to the same destination, using the same application and a similar time window. Check connection-establishment time, steady round-trip latency and variation, packet loss, route, DNS delay, and whether small and large transfers behave differently. One speed test cannot isolate which address family is responsible.
Why IPv6 can expose a problem
A weaker IPv6 route
IPv4 and IPv6 can take different routes through your ISP and the wider internet. If the IPv6 path is congested, distant, lossy, or misrouted, it can perform worse even while IPv4 is healthy. RIPE’s residential ISP guidance describes broken IPv6 connectivity that can make dual-stack websites slow or fail: RIPE-631.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
A delay before fallback
When a hostname has both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, a dual-stack client may try IPv6 and then IPv4. The current IETF specification, RFC 8305, defines “Happy Eyeballs,” which staggers or races connection attempts to reduce user-visible delay while generally preferring IPv6. The connection that succeeds may therefore be IPv4, masking an IPv6 failure unless you test each family separately.
The earlier RFC 6555 documents the historical problem: an impaired IPv6 connection could leave an application waiting many seconds before it fell back to IPv4. RFC 8305 supersedes it as the current algorithm specification.

An unintended tunnel
IPv6 may be carried over a tunnel or relay rather than a native ISP connection. RIPE-631 names tunnel brokers, 6to4, and Teredo as configurations to check. It also cites published studies reporting about a 15% failure rate for public 6to4 relays. That is a figure reported in a 2015 document, not a current, universal failure rate.
Path MTU Discovery is failing
IPv6 relies on Path MTU Discovery to learn what packet size can travel across a route. If a link requires smaller packets and ICMPv6 “Packet Too Big” messages are filtered, small requests may work while larger transfers stall or time out. RIPE-631 advises checking ICMPv6 filtering rather than guessing at an MTU value; Cloudflare describes the same general failure mechanism in its Path MTU Discovery engineering account.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to diagnose IPv6 latency step by step
- Define the symptom. Note whether the delay affects web-page startup, gaming ping, sustained downloads, or every application. If possible, compare wired and Wi-Fi connections and repeat checks against the same destinations.
- Check both address families. Run the dual-stack test referenced by RIPE’s helpdesk guidance, test-ipv6.com. Record the IPv4 and IPv6 results, slow-connection or MTU warnings, and any reported network or ASN details. Resolve ordinary IPv4 or DNS failures first; they are not automatically IPv6 faults.
- Inspect router provisioning. Check that IPv6 is enabled on the router’s WAN connection and that the ISP has delegated a prefix for the home LAN. Verify router advertisements and/or DHCPv6 behavior, then confirm that clients have appropriate IPv6 addresses and prefixes. A static or overridden client setting can interfere with otherwise working router configuration. Router menu names vary by model and firmware.
- Look for a tunnel. Review the router, operating system, or network configuration for a tunnel broker, 6to4, or Teredo setup that you did not intend to use. If a tunnel is deliberate, compare its route with the native IPv4 path rather than assuming the tunnel is equivalent.
- Compare routes and latency. Use traceroute or MTR for the same destination over IPv4 and IPv6, and repeat measurements rather than relying on one result. Separate connection setup from steady-state round-trip time. Cloudflare’s IPv6 compatibility troubleshooting guidance asks users to provide traceroute evidence for service issues.
- Test for a packet-size problem. If small requests work but large transfers hang, note any MTU warning and check whether ICMPv6 type 2, Packet Too Big, messages are being filtered. Do not apply a guessed MTU value; RIPE recommends escalating path problems to network engineering.
- Escalate with evidence. If the fault remains beyond your home router, send the ISP or network operator the test results and IPv6 traceroute or MTR output, along with the affected destination and time. This gives them a route-specific problem to investigate.
Should you disable IPv6?
Use a temporary IPv6-off comparison as a diagnostic, not as a general fix. If the same application and destination work normally with IPv6 disabled, that suggests an IPv6 path or configuration issue; it does not identify which one. A client-side toggle will not repair a poor route or restore broken Path MTU Discovery, and disabling IPv6 everywhere can conceal the fault rather than resolve it.
For a problem limited to a Cloudflare-managed website, Cloudflare’s compatibility setting applies to that service, not to your home router. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests checking whether turning off its IPv6 Compatibility setting resolves that particular service issue; treat this as a controlled test for the affected service, not a recommendation to disable IPv6 network-wide.

When the router may be responsible
Check the existing router’s actual capabilities and ISP configuration before considering new hardware. A replacement is relevant only if the current device demonstrably lacks IPv6 support or cannot provision it correctly, and the replacement must be compatible with the ISP. A router upgrade is not, by itself, a supported latency fix.

Available historical figures illustrate why broad claims about IPv6 performance need context. Cloudflare estimated that 93.2% of IPv6 connections would not need Path MTU Detection/ICMP at a 1400-byte edge MTU, and estimated that 2 of every 100 IPv6 TCP connections received an ICMP Packet Too Big message in its Frankfurt data center. Those are Cloudflare estimates tied to its own network and the period of its engineering account, not consumer-network rates.

A Google Research paper on IPv6 adoption cites a historical study in which IPv6 latency was significantly higher on 36% of measured paths across 26 measurement points. That result does not establish how IPv6 performs for users today. None of these figures can tell you whether your own IPv6 route is slower; compare the paths and symptoms on your connection.
