It can offer wide viewing angles, but available evidence does not show that IPS prevents eye damage or is medically better for vision than other panel types. Screen use can still bring temporary discomfort, so brightness, glare, viewing distance, posture, and breaks matter more than the IPS label.
What IPS means for your eyes
IPS (in-plane switching) describes how a monitor’s LCD panel produces an image. Manufacturer descriptions focus on image properties such as viewing angles—not clinical protection from eye damage. A wide viewing angle may make the picture easier to see when you are not directly in front of the screen, but that is not evidence of a health benefit.

No clinical trial or authoritative guidance cited here establishes that IPS panels are safer for eyes than VA, TN, or other panel types. It is therefore more useful to compare the comfort features of specific monitors than to choose a panel type as an eye-health measure.

Prolonged screen use can cause temporary digital eye discomfort, regardless of the panel label. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) lists dry eyes, blurred vision, tearing, and headaches as possible symptoms. Its guidance says computer-screen blue light has not been shown to harm eyes and that “Digital eye discomfort is not caused by blue light.” (AAO, “Digital Devices and Your Eyes”)

- VIVID COLORS: Experience stunning colors across the entire display with the IPS panel. Colors remain bright and clear across the screen, even when you change angles. Tones and shades are represented consistently and beautifully with less color washing.
- SMOOTH PERFORMANCE: Stay in the action when playing games, watching videos, or working on creative projects. The 100Hz refresh rate reduces lag and motion blur so you don't miss a thing in fast-paced moments.¹
- MORE GAMING POWER: Gain a competitive edge with optimizable game settings. Color and image contrast can be instantly adjusted to see scenes more clearly, while Game Mode adjusts any game to fill your screen with every detail in view.
- EASY ON THE EYES: Protect your vision and stay comfortable, even during long sessions. Stay focused on your work with reduced blue light and screen flicker.²
- A MODERN AESTHETIC: Featuring a super-slim design with ultra-thin border bezels, this monitor enhances any setup with a sleek, modern look. Enjoy a lightweight and stylish addition to any environment.
That means discomfort while using an IPS monitor does not show that IPS is damaging your vision—or that another panel type would prevent symptoms. Consider how long you use the screen and the conditions in which you view it.
How to make screen use more comfortable
The AAO recommends practical adjustments that address viewing habits and the workspace rather than panel technology:

- Look away periodically. The AAO’s 20-20-20 guidance is to look every 20 minutes at something at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. (AAO guidance, March 10, 2021)
- Set a comfortable distance and height. Sit about 25 inches—or roughly an arm’s length—from the screen, and position it so you look slightly downward.
- Adjust brightness and contrast. Choose settings that are comfortable for your surroundings rather than treating a preset mode as eye protection.
- Reduce glare. Change the screen or nearby lighting to limit reflections. If glare remains a problem, the AAO suggests a matte screen filter as an option.
The AAO does not recommend special blue-light-blocking eyewear for computer use because evidence of benefit is lacking. (AAO guidance, March 10, 2021)

What to compare when choosing a monitor
Comfort-related specifications vary by model; they are not guaranteed by an IPS panel. Compare the actual monitor’s features and how you will use it.

- Incredible Images: The Acer KB272 G0bi 27" monitor with 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail.
- Adaptive-Sync Support: Get fast refresh rates thanks to the Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible) product that matches the refresh rate of your monitor with your graphics card. The result is a smooth, tear-free experience in gaming and video playback applications.
- Responsive!!: Fast response time of 1ms enhances the experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting. A 120Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver smooth 2D motion scenes in gaming and video.
- 27" Full HD (1920 x 1080) Widescreen IPS Monitor | Adaptive-Sync Support (FreeSync Compatible)
- Refresh Rate: Up to 120Hz | Response Time: 1ms VRB | Brightness: 250 nits | Pixel Pitch: 0.311mm
- Brightness adjustment: Check that you can set brightness to a comfortable level for the room.
- Glare control: Look for an anti-glare surface if reflections are a concern.
- Flicker information: Check whether the manufacturer specifies flicker control or flicker-free operation; do not assume the IPS label means either.
- Readable size and text: Consider screen size and text readability from your intended viewing distance.
- Stand adjustment: A stand that lets you position the display for a slightly downward gaze can help match AAO viewing guidance.
For example, EIZO lists the FlexScan EV2460 as an LED-backlit IPS LCD with a 178-degree viewing angle, brightness adjustment, a flicker-control design, and an anti-glare coating. ASUS describes its VY249HG2 as a 23.8-inch IPS monitor with a 178-degree viewing angle and TÜV Rheinland-certified flicker-free and low-blue-light features. These are manufacturer claims about those specific models; they do not establish that IPS prevents eye strain or eye disease. (EIZO FlexScan EV2460 specifications; ASUS VY249HG2 specifications)

Breaks and workspace adjustments may help with temporary discomfort, but they do not diagnose its cause. If symptoms persist, worsen, or interfere with daily activities, consult an eye-care professional rather than relying on a panel type, filter, or screen mode to treat them.
