What the iPhone XR’s screen specifications mean in a VR viewer
Apple lists the XR’s display as a 6.1-inch diagonal IPS LCD with a resolution of 1792 × 828 pixels and a density of 326 pixels per inch. Apple also gives it a typical contrast ratio of 1400:1 and typical maximum brightness of 625 nits. These are specifications for the phone’s full display, not a measurement of how sharp a particular VR app will look.

In stereoscopic phone VR, software presents one view for the left eye and another for the right, then corrects the images for the viewer’s lenses. As a result, neither eye sees the entire 1792 × 828 panel as its own image. The exact pixels available to each eye depend on the app’s layout and viewer configuration; the cited documentation does not publish an XR-specific per-eye resolution. Google describes this split-view and distortion-correction approach in its Cardboard iOS developer guide.

Does the iPhone XR have a gyroscope for VR?
Yes. Apple lists a three-axis gyroscope and an accelerometer in the iPhone XR’s technical specifications. In compatible phone-VR software, these sensors provide motion input used to track orientation as you turn your head. Apple also lists a barometer, proximity sensor, ambient-light sensor, and Face ID, but those are not substitutes for the gyro and accelerometer in this use.
Google’s Cardboard SDK describes software that can provide stereoscopic rendering and head tracking on a smartphone. That supports orientation-based viewing: the image can respond as the phone turns. It does not establish that a phone-only Cardboard viewer tracks your position as you move around a room. Google’s SDK documentation describes capabilities developers can build, not a guarantee that a particular app is available or works on the XR today.

Can you use an iPhone XR with Google Cardboard?
The XR’s listed gyroscope makes it plausible at the hardware level for compatible Cardboard-style iPhone VR. Google’s iPhone and iPad setup instructions specify iOS 8.0 or later and explain that an incompatible-device warning may indicate a missing gyroscope. Apple confirms that the XR has one.

What these specifications do—and do not—tell you
- Screen: 1792 × 828 pixels at 326 ppi is the resolution and density of the entire phone panel, not the resolution seen by each eye in stereoscopic VR.
- Motion input: The three-axis gyro and accelerometer support orientation tracking in compatible software.
- Tracking limits: The listed sensors and Cardboard documentation do not establish room-scale positional tracking for a phone-only viewer.
- Experience and compatibility: Specifications alone do not confirm current app support, viewer fit, comfort, latency, or image quality.
Apple’s ARKit documentation discusses device motion tracking in the context of augmented reality. It is not evidence that the iPhone XR has a dedicated VR headset mode.
