A production database migration is safer when its backup, lock behavior, application compatibility, cutover checks, and rollback path are rehearsed as one operation. There is no universally safe “database first” or “application first” order: deploy each stage so the application versions running at that moment remain compatible with the schema, and do not redirect production traffic until the target has passed agreed validation.
1. Define the migration and its success conditions
Start by identifying what is changing. A schema change on one database, a major-version upgrade, and a move to another engine or platform have different risks and recovery requirements. Record the source and target engines and versions, hosting arrangement, database objects, data volume, application dependencies, and which reads or writes must remain available.
Agree on observable success conditions before scheduling the work. Depending on the migration, these can include an inventory of expected schema objects, row counts or other data reconciliation, application smoke tests, and database and application health signals. Set the maintenance window, name the people authorized to extend it or roll back, establish a communication channel, and define cutover checkpoints. AWS recommends estimating rollback time and rehearsing the work with representative data volume (AWS rollback guidance).
2. Rehearse the complete sequence
Run the whole procedure in a non-production environment that approximates production in data size, transaction rate, configuration, and dependencies. If it cannot match production, document the differences that could change timing or behavior.

Measure backup, restore, synchronization, migration, validation, routing, and recovery time. Use those measurements to decide whether the maintenance window is realistic or whether you need a contingency. AWS recommends testing backup and restore in lower environments to understand restoration time, and recommends dry-running migration activities and documenting rollback time (AWS rollback guidance; AWS pre-migration guidance).
Rehearse rollback or fail-forward as well as the planned migration. Decide in advance who makes the call, what conditions trigger it, when the decision must be made, and how you will handle data written after cutover.
3. Prepare a backup you can recover from
- Verify that a recent backup exists and that its retention, access controls, and recovery point meet your recovery objectives.
- Test a restore in a lower environment and record how long it takes. An untested backup does not establish that recovery will fit the available window.
- For consistency-sensitive cutovers, agree when writes will be frozen or otherwise controlled, and when the final source backup will be taken.
- Keep the source available; postpone destructive cleanup until target validation and the rollback decision period are complete.
AWS describes a cutover sequence of freezing ingestion, taking a backup, synchronizing final data, and then changing routing (AWS cutover and rollback guidance). The exact controls differ by system, but the operational point is the same: establish the agreed consistency point before treating the target as current.

4. Check lock behavior for the actual engine and operation
Do not infer lock impact from how quickly a statement runs against an idle test database. Check the documentation for the exact engine and version, determine whether the operation rewrites data or blocks readers or writers, and test under representative data volume and concurrency. Find out whether a lock lasts until the statement completes or until its transaction ends.

In PostgreSQL 18, an explicit LOCK TABLE waits for conflicting locks unless NOWAIT is specified. With NOWAIT, the command fails rather than waiting if a conflicting lock prevents acquisition. Once acquired, the lock remains until the transaction ends, so avoid leaving a transaction open after the migration work is finished (PostgreSQL 18 LOCK documentation).
PostgreSQL 18: limit lock waits for a migration session
PostgreSQL’s lock_timeout setting aborts a statement when an individual lock acquisition waits longer than the configured interval. If the aim is to constrain one migration session, choose a session-level setting deliberately after rehearsal rather than setting it globally in postgresql.conf; the PostgreSQL documentation cautions against the global approach for that use case (PostgreSQL 18 client connection defaults).

For any engine, establish how operators will observe active sessions and deal with blockers, including long-running or idle transactions. Coordinate the migration with application traffic and an operator authorized to wait, cancel, or terminate work safely. There is no single lock timeout or safe lock duration that applies to every database and migration.
5. Deploy in an order that preserves compatibility
List the application versions that may run while old and new schema structures coexist. Each intermediate schema should remain compatible with the application version live at that stage. Rehearse this exact sequence against your deployment system and include rollback constraints in the plan.
For changes that cannot be completed atomically
A common staged pattern is to add compatible structures first, deploy code that can work with both old and new representations, backfill and validate data, switch reads and writes, then remove old structures only after old application versions are no longer running. Treat this as a design pattern, not a universal sequence: the correct order depends on the application’s compatibility and recovery requirements.

For AWS DMS migrations
If you use AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), check which schema objects your chosen migration workflow creates and which it does not. AWS notes that some workflows do not automatically create all objects, including secondary indexes and foreign keys, so account for required objects and triggers in preparation and target validation (AWS DMS best practices). AWS also emphasizes accounting for application dependencies when planning migration waves (AWS pre-migration guidance).
AWS DMS supports same-engine and cross-engine migrations; Amazon RDS Blue/Green Deployments are a separate, platform-specific option. Compare options against engine and version compatibility, downtime and write-freeze tolerance, data volume and change rate, validation work, rollback behavior after target writes, operational complexity, and managed-service availability (AWS DMS overview; Amazon RDS Blue/Green Deployments).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Cut over only after the target is ready
- Control source writes. Freeze ingestion or apply another tested consistency control if the migration requires a stable source.
- Take the final backup. Use the agreed cutover point and confirm the backup completed.
- Finish synchronization. Wait for final data transfer or replication to catch up, then verify its state.
- Validate the target. Run the reconciliation queries, schema/object checks, and application smoke tests agreed before the migration. AWS DMS guidance recommends checking replication on the target with queries (AWS DMS best practices).
- Change routing. Apply the planned endpoint, DNS, load balancer, or application configuration change only after the checks pass.
- Watch production behavior. Monitor errors, latency, database health, replication state, and business-critical flows against the agreed checkpoints.
RDS Blue/Green Deployments are not a general-purpose feature for every engine or environment. AWS describes the feature for RDS for MariaDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, with support conditions that vary by engine, Region, and version. AWS says switchover downtime is typically under a minute but can be longer depending on workload; verify current support and rehearse your workload rather than treating that timing as a guarantee (Amazon RDS Blue/Green Deployments).

7. Make rollback safe for data written after cutover
Set the rollback criteria, decision owner, and deadline before switching traffic. Decide which conditions mean “fix forward” and which require a rollback, and keep the migration communication channel open for application owners and stakeholders.
If no new data has been written to the target, returning traffic to the source may be as simple as restoring the previous routing. Once production writes reach the target, however, the old source may be stale. Before redirecting users back, you need a tested way to reconcile or replicate those writes, restore them, or continue forward safely. AWS specifically recommends defining a data-handling strategy for rollback and identifying who will make the decision (AWS rollback guidance).
Measure the recovery path during rehearsal and compare it with the business recovery window. Do not assume changing DNS or a load-balancer target alone makes a post-cutover rollback safe.
