A separate screen protector can add scratch protection, but check that it fits both the phone and the case. No case can guarantee that the phone will survive every drop.
What to look for in an iPhone X case
- Exact model compatibility: Check the listing for “iPhone X.” A case labeled for a newer model is not automatically a fit. For example, Speck’s archived Presidio Clear listing is labeled for iPhone XS/X, while OtterBox announced a separate iPhone X case lineup in 2017.
- Shock-absorbing construction: Look for a design that combines a firm outer shell with materials intended to absorb impact. Speck describes the Presidio Clear as using a polycarbonate shell and shock-absorbing material.
- Display clearance: A raised bezel or lip can help keep the screen from directly contacting a flat surface when the phone lands face-down. It cannot cover every impact angle or prevent all screen damage.
- Handling and coverage: Consider grip and bulk alongside protection. Layered cases may add coverage but feel less slim; check the dimensions and design in the actual listing because the cited manufacturers do not provide a common bulk measurement.
- Condition and seller: The cited product pages do not establish current marketplace stock, pricing, or seller quality. Confirm the listing is for the iPhone X and review its condition and seller before buying.
How the historical iPhone X case styles differ
OtterBox’s September 2017 announcement described several case families for the iPhone X. These are useful examples of different coverage approaches, not a current availability list or a head-to-head performance ranking.

What drop-test claims do—and do not—tell you
Manufacturers report their own test methods, and the figures should be read within those limits. Speck’s archived Presidio Clear page states an 8-foot drop-test claim for that product. OtterBox’s September 12, 2017 announcement says each iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X case design seeking its Drop+ seal underwent at least 24 tests across more than 238 hours. These are different manufacturer-reported claims, not results from a shared comparison protocol or independent head-to-head test.

Neither figure predicts what will happen in a particular fall. Impact surface, angle, height, and the case’s condition can affect the outcome; the cited sources do not quantify those factors for a specific iPhone X case. Speck also says that no case can guarantee a phone will never be damaged (Speck support article, modified September 9, 2026).

Should you add a screen protector?
A case and screen protector address different risks: a raised case edge helps keep the display from contacting a flat surface, while a screen protector can add scratch protection. OtterBox’s 2017 announcement named Alpha Glass screen guards for its iPhone X-era lineup and identified case families they supported. That historical compatibility does not establish that a current protector listing will fit your iPhone X or your chosen case.
- Confirm the protector’s listing explicitly includes iPhone X.
- Check that the listing names your case or otherwise confirms case compatibility.
- Follow the protector’s installation instructions. OtterBox’s current FAQ cautions that precision-fit cases may not accommodate products that change device dimensions.
What protection should you not assume?
Do not treat a drop-test label as a promise of damage-free use, and do not infer water protection from the case descriptions discussed here. OtterBox’s 2017 announcement explicitly said its listed iPhone X-era cases were not water-protective. The available sources also do not establish an independent, controlled comparison of iPhone X cases or a statistical reduction in breakage, so an objective “best” ranking or safety percentage is not supported.

How to check a listing before buying
- Read the compatibility line and confirm it names iPhone X, not merely a different iPhone model.
- Look for a raised screen edge and a description of shock-absorbing construction.
- If adding a screen protector, verify its exact phone fit and case compatibility separately.
- Read the listing’s condition, seller, and return terms; manufacturer pages cited here do not verify current marketplace inventory.
