Invoiceize puts invoice-entry controls beside a live document preview so users can see how details such as longer descriptions, a logo, or extra line items affect the finished invoice before downloading it as a PDF. That is the creator’s design rationale, not a measured claim that the layout reduces errors or speeds payment.
Why put the preview beside the form?
An invoice is both structured information and a document a client has to read. Entering correct names, dates, quantities, and totals matters, but so does how those details fit on the page. A long service description, company logo, or added line can change the document’s appearance. Invoiceize’s side-by-side arrangement is intended to make those changes visible while editing rather than only after export.

The creator describes a browser-based invoice generator for freelancers and small businesses. Its workflow moves from entering invoice information to checking the preview, choosing a template, and downloading a PDF. The creator says the tool requires no signup and the downloaded invoice has no watermark. The live interface includes controls for the following information and layout choices:

- Invoice number, currency, issue date, and due date
- Line items, tax, discounts, shipping, amount paid, and remaining balance
- Payment details, terms, purchase-order number, notes, and customizable labels

Prepare the details before composing an invoice
Gathering the underlying information first makes it easier to check the document as it takes shape. Invoiceize’s guide recommends having these details ready:
- Your business identity and logo, if used
- The client’s correct billing address and the contact who approves or pays invoices
- A required purchase-order number, if applicable
- The work delivered, relevant dates, agreed rates, and payment terms
- Deposits or other amounts already paid
- Payment instructions
Build and review the invoice
Enter parties, number, and dates
Add the issuer’s business details and the client’s “Bill to” information. Assign a unique invoice number, then enter the issue and due dates. Check the client identity and billing details carefully: a polished layout cannot correct information entered in the wrong fields.

Describe work in readable line items
For each item, include a description, quantity, rate, and amount. Make the description specific enough that someone outside the project can understand what was supplied. Watch the preview as you add or lengthen descriptions; their effect on the page is one of the main reasons to inspect the rendered document during editing.

Enter any applicable discount, tax, shipping charge, and amount already paid, then verify the total and remaining balance. Tax rules depend on the jurisdictions involved and the type of transaction. Invoiceize’s guide presents an illustration in which tax is calculated after a discount and before shipping, but explicitly warns that rules differ. Treat that sequence as an example, not a universal tax rule; consult the relevant tax authority or an accountant if unsure.

For example, Invoiceize’s 2026 guide illustrates a photographer’s services and print album with a $1,080.00 subtotal, a 10% discount of −$108.00, example sales tax of $80.19, and $15.00 shipping, for a total due of $1,067.19. The illustration taxes the discounted amount and excludes shipping; local rules may require different treatment.
Add payment information and notes
Include payment instructions and any useful notes or terms. Make sure the recipient can tell how to pay and whom to contact with a question.

Choose a template, inspect, and export
Choose a template and page size, review the complete preview, and download the PDF. The guide recommends PDF delivery because it preserves the document’s appearance across devices and is less prone to accidental editing than an editable document or spreadsheet. Before sending, check:

- Tax and discount treatment follows the rules that apply to the transaction
- Payment instructions are present, and any applicable registration or tax number is included
- The PDF is clearly named and sent to the person responsible for payment
What happens to a draft?
The creator says drafts are stored in browser local storage, not synchronized across devices. Clearing browser data may remove a draft, so do not treat the generator as cloud backup or assume an in-progress invoice will appear on another device.

What is not established about the interface
The available product and build descriptions do not explain the software framework, document-rendering implementation, responsive breakpoints, or how the side-by-side layout behaves on mobile. The build post drew a reader question about how the design works when a screen cannot fit both panels, but the inspected sources do not answer it. Do not assume a particular mobile layout or interaction behavior without checking the current product.
When a generator may not be enough
A lightweight browser generator may suit a business that mainly needs to create and export invoices. If the work also requires bookkeeping, paid/unpaid tracking, payment reminders, or tax-time reports, accounting software may be a better fit. Word or Google Docs offers familiar, flexible layouts for occasional invoices, but numbering and arithmetic are manual. Excel or Google Sheets can calculate totals and maintain a log, though formulas can be overwritten and print-to-PDF layout needs attention. Payment platforms may place payment options on an invoice, with processing fees and potentially fewer design or field choices. The right approach depends on the need for calculation, records, payment tracking, layout control, and data synchronization.
