iPhone vs. Android: Which Platform Gets Longer Software Support?

Google Pixel 8 and newer phones have the clearest seven-year OS-and-security commitment. Samsung offers up to seven years of security support on selected Galaxy models, while Apple documents iPhone feature updates reaching as far back as six years historically.

There is no defensible platform-wide winner. Google’s Pixel 8 and newer phones have the clearest forward-looking commitment: seven years of operating-system and security updates, counted from each model’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Samsung says selected Galaxy devices can receive security updates for up to seven years, but the exact term and monthly, quarterly or biannual cadence depend on the model. Apple documents iPhone feature-update support reaching as far back as six years from original release, which is a historical result rather than a universal promise for every future iPhone.

For a purchase or a used-phone check, compare the exact model, the promised OS-upgrade period, the security-patch period, the date from which support is counted and the expected delivery cadence. “Android” is not one support policy, and a security patch for an older iOS branch is not the same as receiving the newest iOS version.

What “software support” includes

Support duration is meaningful only when you identify what is being counted. Manufacturers use several different categories:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Major operating-system upgrades: New Android or iOS versions that can change system behavior, APIs, settings and built-in features.
  • Security updates: Patches for vulnerabilities in the operating system, device components and vendor software. They can arrive without the newest OS features.
  • Bug fixes and maintenance releases: Stability, compatibility and performance corrections, sometimes delivered in the same package as a security patch.
  • Feature drops or interface upgrades: New capabilities that may arrive between major OS releases. Google explicitly includes regular Pixel Feature Drops in its Pixel 8 commitment.

A seven-year security term therefore cannot automatically be described as seven major Android upgrades. Conversely, an iPhone that receives a security release for an older iOS branch has not necessarily received the current iOS feature release. A fair comparison keeps those categories separate.

Current official policies at a glance

Phone example What the official material establishes How the period is counted What it does not establish
Google Pixel 8 and later Seven years of operating-system and security updates, plus ongoing Feature Drops. From the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US. It is a Pixel policy, not a promise for every Android phone. Rollout can be gradual and depend on the operator and device.
Selected Samsung Galaxy devices Security-update support can extend up to seven years. Samsung’s live list assigns devices to monthly, quarterly or biannual schedules. Eligibility and cadence are model-specific; the public page is a security-support listing. It is not a universal seven-year term for every Galaxy and does not prove seven major Android-version upgrades.
Apple iPhone Apple reports that iOS feature updates have reached as far back as six years from a device’s original release. That six-year figure describes historical feature-update reach. Apple does not state in the cited material a universal future support term for every iPhone. Older-branch security releases are distinct from the newest iOS.

These figures are not interchangeable: Google’s number is a stated commitment for named Pixel models, Samsung’s headline is a maximum for security support on selected Galaxy models, and Apple’s number is a documented historical observation.

Google Pixel: the clearest seven-year commitment

What is covered

Google’s Pixel policy covers Pixel 8 and later phones. It promises seven years of operating-system updates and security updates, and the announcement also includes regular Feature Drops. The live support page names eligible generations, including Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 8a and newer models listed there.

Google announced the Pixel 8 pledge on October 4, 2023. At launch, it said those phones would be supported into 2030. The seven-year clock starts when the particular model first became available on the Google Store in the United States, not when an individual customer activates it. A used Pixel bought two years after launch does not receive a fresh seven-year period.

What an update actually contains

Google describes Pixel updates as including new features, security enhancements, operating-system updates and bug fixes. That wording makes the policy broader than a security-only promise. It still does not mean every Feature Drop, app feature or hardware-dependent function will work identically on every model throughout the period.

  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

Delivery is not simultaneous

The support policy says rollout is gradual. An update can depend on the operator and the device configuration and may take a few weeks to reach a particular phone. A published support end date is therefore a coverage commitment, not a guarantee that every handset receives a package on the same day.

How to check a Pixel’s current status

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About phone and review the Android version and Android security update level.
  3. Install any available update, then check the security date again after the phone restarts.
  4. Compare the model’s original US Google Store availability with the seven-year policy and confirm that the exact model is one of the generations named on Google’s support page.

The settings screen tells you what is installed now; the policy page tells you the stated support window. You need both when assessing an older or imported device.

Samsung Galaxy: potentially seven years of security support, with model-by-model cadence

Read “up to seven years” literally

Samsung’s Mobile Security support page says that, as of January 2024, Galaxy security-update support extends up to seven years for selected devices. “Up to” is a maximum, not a standard term that applies to every Galaxy phone. Samsung publishes a device list and places eligible models in monthly, quarterly and biannual groups.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page describes firmware security updates that include Android OS-related security issues released by Google as well as Samsung-specific security issues. That is useful evidence about patch coverage and cadence, but it does not by itself specify how many major Android versions a device will receive.

Why cadence matters

A monthly listing gives a different risk profile from a quarterly or biannual listing. A phone can remain within its stated support period while receiving fixes less often than a flagship on the monthly schedule. The list can change, so check the live entry for the exact model and region before buying.

Do not substitute the 2022 announcement

Samsung’s February 9, 2022 announcement for selected devices promised up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates. That was an important policy at the time, but it is an older, select-device announcement—not the current Galaxy-wide rule. Use the current security-support listing for present eligibility and treat the older figures as historical context.

How to check a Galaxy

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About phone to record the exact model name and model number.
  3. Open Software information and note the Android version, One UI version and Android security patch level.
  4. Match the precise model number to Samsung’s current Mobile Security device list.
  5. Record whether Samsung lists it for monthly, quarterly or biannual updates, and do not infer a seven-year term if the model is not in the relevant group.

Carrier variants and regional versions can differ. When a listing is ambiguous, the model number and the support page’s regional scope are more reliable than a retailer’s generic “seven years” description.

iPhone: long demonstrated support, but not a universal forward promise

What Apple’s longevity evidence says

Apple’s June 2024 longevity report says iOS feature updates have reached as far back as six years from a device’s original release. It also gives a contemporaneous example: iOS 17 was compatible with 24 iPhone models introduced since 2018. Both statements describe what Apple had delivered or supported at that time; neither is a guarantee that every future iPhone will receive six years of feature updates.

Apple’s security-release index lists releases by iOS branch and identifies the iPhone models that can install each release. That model-and-version approach matters because an older handset may receive a security fix without being eligible for the newest major iOS release.

Examples of older-branch security maintenance

Apple’s record includes iOS 15.8.8 for iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 models, released May 11, 2026, and iOS 12.5.8 for iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 models, released January 26, 2026. These dated entries demonstrate continued maintenance of older branches; they are not a forecast of how long current iPhones will be supported.

How to check an iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General, then About, and record the exact model.
  3. Return to General and tap Software Update to see the newest iOS version offered to that model.
  4. Compare the installed version with Apple’s security-release index and compatibility guidance.
  5. Distinguish an update offered on an older branch from the newest major iOS feature release.

Apple’s compatibility list is the authoritative answer for a particular release. A general statement such as “iPhones get six years” is too broad because it turns a historical maximum into a promise.

Which platform is longer on each comparison axis?

Question Best-supported answer
Which has the clearest forward-looking OS-and-security term? Pixel 8 and later: seven years under Google’s stated policy.
Which Android option has a seven-year headline? Selected Galaxy devices can have up to seven years of security support, with eligibility and cadence varying by model.
Which has the strongest historical feature-update record in the cited material? Apple reports iOS feature updates reaching as far back as six years from original release.
Does the longest security term equal the longest OS-upgrade term? No. Samsung’s seven-year figure concerns security-update support, and Apple’s older-branch security releases are not new major iOS versions.
Will every owner receive an update on the same day? No. Google describes gradual, operator-dependent rollout; Samsung uses cadence groups; Apple publishes release-specific compatibility lists.
Can a used phone start a new support clock? No. Count from the model’s original availability or release basis used by the manufacturer.

How to choose a phone that will remain usable

For a new purchase

  1. Write down the exact model and launch date. “Pixel,” “Galaxy” or “iPhone” is not precise enough.
  2. Separate the two promises. Record the number of major OS upgrades and the number of years of security patches as separate fields.
  3. Identify the starting point. Google uses first US Google Store availability for Pixel 8 and later. Apple’s cited six-year figure is measured from original release. Samsung’s current page requires model-level eligibility.
  4. Check cadence and delivery conditions. A quarterly or biannual patch schedule may matter more to your risk tolerance than a headline maximum.
  5. Check the model in your market. Operator and regional variants can change availability and timing, particularly on Android.

For a used phone

Start with the original model release, not the seller’s purchase date. Then check the installed security-patch date, the newest OS version offered to that model and the manufacturer’s current eligibility list. A phone with a low purchase price can still have little support time left if it launched several years earlier.

For a work or high-risk account

Prioritize a published security term and a predictable cadence over feature promises. Confirm that your operator supports the model and that required applications still support the operating-system version you plan to run. The manufacturer’s end date does not guarantee that every bank, workplace or authentication app will support the device until that date.

Why policy length does not equal total phone life

Software support is only one part of longevity. Battery capacity, storage, repairability, cellular-band compatibility, water damage and app requirements can end a phone’s practical life before its final security patch. The official policies cited here do not provide a controlled measurement of total usable handset lifespan or an apples-to-apples average of update delays.

Hardware-support statements should also be kept separate from software terms. Google’s Pixel 8 announcement included a seven-year hardware-support and parts-availability statement, but parts availability is not itself an OS-update guarantee. Samsung’s security cadence does not promise a particular battery condition, and Apple’s historical iOS record does not establish future repair economics.

Common mistakes when comparing iPhone and Android support

  • Treating Android as one manufacturer. Pixel and Galaxy policies are different, and other Android makers have their own terms.
  • Turning “up to seven years” into “seven years for every model.” Samsung’s wording applies only to selected devices on its live list.
  • Calling a security patch a major OS upgrade. Older iOS branches and security-only Android releases can remain supported without receiving the newest feature set.
  • Converting Apple’s history into a guarantee. “As far back as six years” reports observed reach, not a universal future commitment.
  • Ignoring the clock’s starting date. Buying second-hand does not reset support.
  • Assuming a policy means same-day delivery. Rollout controls, carriers, regional firmware and staged releases can delay an otherwise eligible device.
  • Relying on a retailer’s generic badge. Verify the exact model number and the manufacturer’s own support records.

Historical context: why precise wording matters

A 2018 Federal Trade Commission report documented substantial variation in manufacturers’ update-support practices and noted that support terms were not uniformly publicized at that time. It is useful background for understanding why published commitments matter, but it is not a measurement of the 2026 market and should not be used as a current platform ranking.

Bottom line

If your priority is the clearest published commitment covering both major OS updates and security patches, a Pixel 8-or-newer model has the strongest evidence in this comparison: seven years from first US Google Store availability. A selected Galaxy may match the seven-year headline for security support, but you must verify the model and cadence and must not assume seven Android upgrades. iPhones have a strong documented history, including feature-update reach as far back as six years, while Apple’s cited material stops short of a universal future term. The defensible choice is therefore model-specific: compare OS upgrades, security years, start date, eligibility, cadence and delivery conditions rather than choosing “iPhone” or “Android” as a single support policy.
