Phasmophobia has surpassed 30 million sales across PC and consoles, Kinetic Games announced on October 8, 2026. The six-year-old Early Access game is marking the milestone with Crimson Eye, a harder Halloween event that runs through November 1. Some Steam users are nevertheless describing the seasonal format as another “grindfest,” although that criticism is anecdotal rather than a platform-wide measure.
What the 30-million milestone means
Kinetic Games says the sales total covers PC and console copies sold since Phasmophobia entered Early Access in 2020. Daniel Knight, the studio’s CEO and the game’s director, said his original goal was “to sell 1000 units in the first year.” He added, “It’s hard to believe we’re celebrating 30 million.”

The result is notable because the game has not yet reached a finished 1.0 release. Steam still labels the build Early Access, warns that it is incomplete and may change, and says Kinetic Games uses player feedback as part of development.
Crimson Eye: dates, rules and rewards
Crimson Eye is the 2026 Halloween event and is scheduled to run until November 1. Its central modifier is Blood Moon weather on rotating locations. Notebookcheck reports that ghosts move 15% faster, sanity drains twice as quickly, and ghost events happen more often. Successful investigations pay more to offset the increased danger.

Goals and unlocks
The event combines community objectives with personal objectives. Reported rewards include the Beholder ID Card and Badge, a Blood Moon Trophy, a Blood Moon Charm, a seasonal T-shirt and upgrades for trophies. The event’s press material presents the format as a recurring annual Halloween activity with rotating maps, tougher hunts, faster sanity loss and improved payouts.
Limited-time bonuses
- Twitch drops were available through October 15.
- Double XP was scheduled for October 15–22.
- Ghost Hunts 4 Hearts was planned for the event’s final week.
These windows are tied to the 2026 event schedule; they are not permanent game features.
Why some Steam users call it a “grindfest”
The term comes from individual Steam-community comments quoted by Notebookcheck, not from an official survey or a measured share of the player base. One commenter wrote, “Seasonal events replaced with grindfests and lazy reskins.” Others called it “another boring event with a boring set of rewards” and said the developers had not listened to players who disliked the seasonal grind.

That sample describes dissatisfaction with repeated objectives and reward structures, but it cannot establish a platform-wide consensus. Steam’s listing, crawled on October 15, 2026, showed 94% positive English-language reviews from 360,223 reviews overall. Recent reviews were 88% positive from 2,465 reviews. Those figures indicate broad approval of the game while leaving room for a narrower backlash against event design.
Is Phasmophobia still in Early Access?
Yes. Steam lists it as an Early Access, four-player online co-op psychological horror game released on September 18, 2020. Kinetic Games is both developer and publisher. Early Access status means features, balance and presentation can change before the planned 1.0 version.
What is planned for version 1.0?
Kinetic Games’ 2026 roadmap describes a path to 1.0 that includes a Player Character update, migration to Unity 6, a netcode update, a Nintendo Switch 2 launch, a horror rework and a lore update. The roadmap also says Crimson Eye, Cursed Hollow and Winter’s Jest are scheduled to return in 2026.

Current coverage places the 1.0 release in the second half of 2027, after a delay intended to give the studio more time to prioritize quality over speed. The roadmap confirms the direction of development, but the reported 2027 window should be treated as a target rather than a guaranteed launch date. The Switch 2 version is confirmed in the roadmap but has no published release date in the available coverage.
How the game works
Teams enter haunted locations with up to four players, collect evidence and identify the ghost before escalating activity becomes fatal. The Steam listing names EMF readers, Spirit Boxes, thermometers, night-vision cameras and voice recognition among the equipment. It lists more than 20 ghost types, more than 10 locations, five default difficulty levels and weekly challenges.
Crimson Eye changes that familiar loop by making movement and sanity management less forgiving. Players who normally rely on slow, methodical evidence gathering must account for faster ghosts, quicker sanity loss and more frequent events, while the higher payout rewards successful risk-taking.

Should you play during Crimson Eye?
- Try it if you want: a tougher variation on the standard investigation loop, seasonal objectives and increased payouts.
- Expect friction if you dislike: repeated event tasks, cosmetic-focused rewards or limited-time progression.
- Remember the status: the game remains in Early Access, so event systems and underlying technology can change before 1.0.
The sales milestone shows that Phasmophobia has reached a very large audience without leaving Early Access. Crimson Eye demonstrates both sides of that position: Kinetic Games can deliver a recurring, high-impact event, while some long-time players want more variety than another seasonal grind. The available Steam ratings support a strong overall reception, but they do not settle the narrower argument about whether this Halloween format is rewarding or repetitive.
