Start with app permissions and location, then review tracking and advertising controls. On an iPhone, use Settings > Privacy & Security to audit access, disable unnecessary precise location, decide whether apps may request cross-company tracking, and turn on App Privacy Report. On Android, use Privacy Dashboard or Permission Manager, choose approximate or while-in-use access where it is sufficient, and review the separate Ads privacy controls. These settings reduce unnecessary access; they do not make every app, website, account, or advertisement anonymous.
The safest approach is selective rather than global: deny access an app does not need, keep a permission only while a feature is being used, and restore it if a function genuinely breaks.

What to change first on any new phone
During setup, apps often ask for permissions before you know how they work. Do not approve every request simply to get through onboarding. Give an app the narrowest access that still performs its job, then revisit the decision after you have used it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Audit sensitive permissions. Check location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos, Bluetooth and local-network access. A map may need location; a calculator usually does not need contacts or a microphone.
- Reduce location scope. Choose one-time or while-in-use access when available. Use approximate location when a general area is enough, and reserve precise or background access for a demonstrated need.
- Separate tracking from ordinary permissions. Allowing a camera or location permission does not automatically grant permission to track activity across other companies’ apps and websites.
- Turn on an audit report. A report can show what apps actually accessed and contacted, but it only records activity after you enable it and its history depends on the operating system.
- Review people and device sharing separately. App permissions do not reveal every account login, family-sharing setting, social-media audience, or person-to-person location share.
Keep a note of anything you deny. If a feature fails, return to the same permission page and allow only the specific access that explains the failure. Avoid switching every privacy control off globally: Apple warns that disabling Location Services can limit many device and third-party features, and Android controls vary by phone maker.

iPhone: a practical privacy setup
1. Audit every sensitive category
Open Settings > Privacy & Security. Select each category—especially Location Services, Photos, Contacts, Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth and Local Network—to see the apps that have requested access. Apple’s category-based controls let you change an individual app’s decision without changing every app.
For each entry, ask what the app does with the data. A photo editor may need selected photos rather than your entire library. A video-call app may need the microphone and camera during calls, but not continuously. If an app’s core function has no plausible connection to a category, choose Don’t Allow. You can grant access later when a real task requires it.
2. Make location an app-by-app decision
In Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, open apps one at a time. Prefer While Using the App or a one-time option when the app can work that way. Turn off Precise Location for services that need only a nearby area, such as finding local content rather than navigating to your exact position.
Keep background or always-on access only when the feature depends on it—for example, a service that must alert you based on movement or a location event. If an app stops providing a location-dependent function, return to its entry and test a less restrictive choice before enabling Location Services for every app. Apple says turning Location Services off entirely can reduce the performance of device and third-party features.
3. Decide whether apps may request cross-company tracking
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. The per-app switches govern tracking across other companies’ apps and websites for advertising or sharing with data brokers; they are not a master switch for every form of data collection inside an app.

You can change an individual app’s decision. You can also turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Apple treats future requests as denied when that setting is off, so apps will not present the usual tracking prompt. This control is separate from location, contacts, camera and other device permissions.
4. Turn on App Privacy Report before you need evidence
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report and activate it. Apple’s feature records access to sensitive data and sensors as well as app network activity, but it starts collecting only after activation. The report builds a view of the preceding seven days as data accumulates; it cannot reconstruct activity from before you enabled it.
Use the report to spot an app accessing a sensor at an unexpected time or contacting a domain you do not recognize. A network entry is a prompt for investigation, not proof of misuse: some connections support sign-in, crash reporting or content delivery. Apple’s Personal Safety guidance says the report is stored on the iPhone itself.
5. Limit Apple-delivered ad personalization if that is your goal
For ads shown in Apple services, check Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising. Apple documents a Personalized Ads switch. Turning it off may make ads less relevant, but Apple says it may not reduce how many ads you see.
Do not confuse this setting with the Tracking permission. Apple Advertising concerns personalization in Apple’s own advertising contexts; the Tracking screen concerns an app’s request to track you across other companies’ apps and websites.

6. Use Safety Check when the concern is sharing with people or devices
Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check when you need to review who can see information or which devices are connected to your accounts. Depending on the situation, Safety Check can stop some location and content sharing, reset system app privacy permissions, and restrict some account-connected device access.
It is not a complete audit of every account or sharing route. Apple specifically warns that Safety Check does not cover every password, social-media sharing arrangement or external service. Check those services directly if you suspect an account has been shared or compromised.
Android: a practical privacy setup
1. Find Privacy Dashboard or Permission Manager
On many phones, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy Dashboard. Other releases place it under Settings > Privacy > Privacy Dashboard, and some manufacturers use Permission Manager. If the labels differ, search Settings for “Privacy Dashboard,” “permissions” or the category you want.
Google’s documented dashboard flow gives different history windows by Android version: the described Android 13 view covers seven days, while the Android 12 flow covers 24 hours. Do not assume another release or manufacturer skin keeps the same period. The dashboard shows access events; open the permission manager to change the underlying decision.
2. Review permissions by category and by app
Inspect Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Photos and other sensitive categories. Android can offer choices such as While in use, One time and Don’t allow for supported permissions. Use the narrowest option that still matches the feature you are using.

For photos, choose selected items rather than a whole library when your Android version offers that choice. For a microphone or camera, deny access until the app asks during a call, recording or scan. Review apps you installed months ago as well as newly installed apps; an old permission can remain useful to neither you nor the app.
3. Choose approximate location and check background access
Android’s location permission can distinguish Approximate from Precise access. Select approximate location when a city or neighborhood is sufficient. Choose precise location for navigation or another function that truly needs your position, and keep background access off unless the app must work when it is not open.
Names and menu locations differ among Android releases and manufacturers. Open an app’s Location entry from Permission Manager and look for the available foreground, background, approximate and precise choices. If a feature breaks, raise only the relevant setting—for example, precise location for navigation—rather than granting every permission.
4. Review Android’s separate Ads privacy controls
Where available, open Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy. The controls can include:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Ad topics: topics Android may use to help select ads.
- App-suggested ads: controls for suggestions an app supplies for ad selection.
- Ad measurement: settings related to measuring ad performance.
Google says availability and visible topics can vary. These options are not a universal “stop all tracking” switch. Google Android Help states that an ad you see may be personalized depending on these settings, your advertising ID settings and the policies of the apps you use. An app’s own privacy policy and account settings can therefore still affect what you see.

5. Decide what to do with the advertising ID
On supported Android versions, Google documents deleting the advertising ID as an option in advertising settings. Deleting it does not stop ads. Apps may use other identifiers or information, and the exact path varies by Android release and manufacturer software.
Treat advertising-ID deletion as one reduction in available ad-personalization data, not as proof that advertising or measurement has ended. After changing it, review the Ads privacy page again if an update or device migration restores a different setting.

| Can an app track activity across companies? | Tracking controls requests for cross-company tracking across apps and websites; turning off requests treats future prompts as denied. | Documented Ads privacy controls cover topics, app-suggested ads and measurement. | Android’s Ads privacy page is not the same permission as Apple’s cross-company Tracking prompt. |

How to test a restrictive setting without getting stuck
- Change one control. For example, switch a shopping app from precise to approximate location, or revoke microphone access from an app you rarely use.
- Use the feature that justified the permission. Try navigation, a video call, photo selection or local-device discovery, depending on the app.
- Read the failure message. If the app identifies a missing permission, grant that permission only and retry.
- Choose a less powerful alternative. Use while-in-use instead of background access, selected photos instead of the full library, or approximate instead of precise location.
- Recheck after an update. Major operating-system and app updates can add permission categories or change available labels.
This process preserves useful features while preventing an all-or-nothing reset. If the app still fails after the minimum required permission is enabled, consult the app’s own support and privacy information rather than opening unrelated categories.
What these controls cannot promise
- Permission denial is not total privacy. An app can still process information you provide directly, information from your account, or data allowed under its own terms and privacy practices.
- Ad controls do not remove every advertisement. Turning off Apple Personalized Ads may not reduce ad volume. Android ads can still depend on advertising-ID choices, other identifiers and app policies.
- Reports are evidence, not a verdict. A network connection may support normal operation, and a report cannot show activity from before it was enabled.
- Global shutdowns have costs. Turning off Location Services or broad device access can disable navigation, discovery, automation or other features.
- Account sharing is a different layer. A clean app-permission screen does not reveal a shared password, a social-media audience, a family account or a location link sent through another service.
A 15-minute setup checklist
For an iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security and inspect Location Services, Photos, Contacts, Camera, Microphone, Bluetooth and Local Network.
- Set each app’s location to While Using, one-time access or no access as appropriate; disable Precise Location when a general area works.
- Open Tracking; reject unnecessary requests or turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track.
- Enable App Privacy Report, then review its seven-day activity after it has had time to collect data.
- Check Apple Advertising if you want less personalization in Apple services, remembering that ad quantity may not change.
- Use Safety Check for supported people, content and device-sharing routes, then inspect other accounts separately.
For an Android phone
- Find Privacy Dashboard or Permission Manager through Settings search if the documented menu is not present.
- Review location, camera, microphone, contacts and photos; choose while-in-use, one-time, approximate or selected-item access where supported.
- Check whether any app has background location and remove it unless the feature genuinely needs it.
- Open the available Ads privacy page at Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy and review topics, app-suggested ads and measurement.
- Consider deleting the advertising ID on a supported version, while understanding that ads and other identifiers can remain.
- Confirm the dashboard’s history window for your Android version; Google’s documented examples are seven days on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12.
Use the phone normally after this pass, then revisit the dashboard or App Privacy Report rather than making assumptions about what an app does. Privacy settings are most effective when they match the specific access a feature needs and are reviewed again after major updates or a change in how you use the phone.
