Short answer: iPhone users can delete some built-in Apple apps, while Android removability depends on the phone maker and the specific app. Pixel, Motorola and Samsung all document ways to disable at least some apps that cannot be uninstalled—but disabling an app is not the same as deleting it.
What does “remove” an app actually do?
Check the action offered for the specific app. Similar-looking options have different effects:

- Remove from Home Screen: Takes the icon off the iPhone Home Screen but leaves the app in the App Library.
- Disable: Turns off an app where the phone allows it. This is not an uninstall, and it may not free the app’s storage.
- Delete or uninstall: Removes an app from the device when that action is available.
Menu wording and available actions vary by phone, software version and app. A missing uninstall option does not necessarily mean the app can be removed another way.

Android’s general guidance likewise says some system apps cannot be deleted and that whether an app can be disabled depends on the phone. Google’s Android help points users to device-specific instructions. There is no reliable platform-wide rule that all Android pre-installed apps are removable—or that none are.

How to check an app on your phone
Look for the available action on the exact app rather than relying on a brand-wide claim. Manufacturer instructions may use different menu labels, and options can vary with the software version and app.
On iPhone
- Touch and hold the app icon.
- Choose Remove App.
- Select Remove from Home Screen to keep it in the App Library, or Delete App to remove it from the iPhone, if that option is available.
Apple cautions that deleting a built-in app can remove associated data or configuration files and affect system functions. Some effects can be restored by downloading the app again.

On Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Apps > All apps.
- Select the app.
- Tap Disable if that option is available.
Google’s Pixel guidance says some preinstalled system apps cannot be deleted.

- Select the app.
- Tap Disable if offered.
These steps are from Motorola’s Android 14 guidance. A disabled preloaded app may still occupy storage.

On Samsung Galaxy S23 series
Touch and hold an app to see the available action. The S23 series manual distinguishes uninstalling downloaded apps from disabling selected default apps that cannot be uninstalled; some apps support neither action.

The available guidance does not support a universal winner. It does not provide a controlled, model-by-model inventory showing which pre-installed apps can be deleted, which can only be disabled, how much storage removal frees, or what functions might be affected across brands. For a meaningful comparison, check the exact phone, software version, app, and carrier or regional variant before buying or changing apps.
