Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse Voice Memos for audio-only recordings and Camera when the sound needs to stay synchronized with video. Neither app is inherently better-sounding in every situation: available recording modes and processing depend on the iPhone model and settings, and Apple’s guides do not establish a universal sound-quality winner.
Which app should you use?
| Your goal | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Record a voice note, interview, lecture, or musical idea without video | Voice Memos | It records audio on its own and includes tools to trim, replace, or resume recordings. |
| Record a video and keep its sound attached | Camera | It captures audio as part of the video. |
This is a practical distinction, not a claim that one app always captures cleaner audio. Apple’s feature documentation describes how the apps work but does not provide a controlled head-to-head sound test.

How their audio capture differs
Voice Memos: audio-first recording
Voice Memos can record using the iPhone’s built-in microphone, a supported headset, or an external microphone. It can also synchronize recordings through iCloud when that option is enabled. For a standalone recording, this keeps the workflow focused on capturing and managing audio rather than making a video.
On supported iPhone models, Voice Memos can record in mono, stereo, or Spatial Audio. Apple says that when Stereo or Spatial Audio is selected, the app uses multiple iPhone microphones and records left and right audio channels. The available choices depend on the model and settings; check what your iPhone offers rather than assuming every mode is available.

Camera: sound captured with video
Camera records audio as part of a video. Apple’s current iPhone User Guide says iPhone 16 and later use Spatial Audio by default and offer a choice of Spatial Audio, stereo, or mono. Apple says earlier iPhone models record stereo. Because options vary by model, check the Camera settings on your device before recording.
Does Voice Memos sound better than recording a video?
There is no general answer supported by Apple’s documentation. A recording’s result depends on factors such as the iPhone model, microphone placement, selected mode, surroundings, and playback setup. To compare the apps on your own phone, keep those factors the same and listen to both recordings under the same conditions.

Can Voice Memos record stereo?
Yes, on supported models. Select Stereo or Spatial Audio when that option is available in Voice Memos; Apple says either mode uses multiple iPhone microphones and left and right channels. For stereo capture with an external stereo microphone or compatible audio interface, Apple says Voice Memos supports those accessories too. Verify compatibility with your iPhone and accessory before relying on a particular setup.
How to record audio on an iPhone without video
- Open Voice Memos. Choose it when you need an audio recording rather than a video with sound.
- Check the recording mode your iPhone supports. Use mono for a voice-focused recording, or select stereo or Spatial Audio if available and appropriate for the sound you want to capture.
- Position the microphone. Move the iPhone or microphone closer to or farther from the subject to adjust the recording level.
- Record and manage the file. Voice Memos supports trimming, replacing, and resuming recordings. iCloud synchronization is available when enabled.
- Choose an export format if you need to share or edit the recording elsewhere. Voice Memos exports to M4A by default. Apple says this export flattens layers and converts Spatial Audio to stereo. An Editable QuickTime Audio export can preserve layers and effects for later adjustment.
When an external microphone makes sense
An external microphone may help you position the mic independently of the phone or capture stereo with a compatible external stereo microphone or audio interface. Apple confirms external-microphone support in Voice Memos, but compatibility depends on the iPhone and accessory. Check both before buying or connecting equipment; support for the category does not guarantee that a particular microphone, interface, or connector will work with your setup.
