Choose 4K when you want more detail to preserve, room to crop or reframe while editing, or a 4K delivery target—and your iPhone and workflow support it. Higher resolution generally means larger files, but Apple does not publish one universal camera-file size or prove that 4K looks visibly better in every situation.
Which iPhone video resolution should I use?
Think about what you will do with the footage, not just the largest setting available. Resolution is one part of the result; frame rate, HDR, camera model, storage, and destination also matter.

| Setting | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p | Everyday family clips, quick sharing, limited storage, or projects that do not need 4K delivery or significant reframing | Usually a practical balance of detail and file size. The amount saved depends on frame rate, codec, HDR, scene content, and export workflow. |
| 4K | Footage where preserving fine detail matters, editing that may involve cropping or reframing, or a 4K output workflow | Higher-resolution recordings take more storage and transfer bandwidth. Check that your iPhone supports the desired frame rate and format. |
| 4K ProRes | Deliberate editing and post-production workflows on supported Pro models | Not a default for casual clips: Apple says ProRes files can be up to 30 times larger than HEVC files. Some recording modes also require fast external storage. |
These are practical choices, not a guarantee that every viewer will notice a difference between 4K and 1080p. The screen size, viewing conditions, edit, and final destination all influence what matters.

Yes: Apple’s iPhone guide says, “Faster frame rates and higher resolutions result in larger video files.” The actual size depends on settings and footage, so there is no single reliable 4K-to-1080p multiplier for every iPhone recording.

Apple’s published size examples are for one-minute iMovie exports, not a universal comparison of original camera recordings. Apple lists a 1080p export at 70–105 MB, with 1080p HD as the default iPhone camera and iMovie export resolution; its corresponding figures are 19–27 MB at 720p, 12–16 MB at 540p, and 6–9 MB at 360p. These are export figures, not predictions for a 4K recording. Apple’s guide to compressing a video on iPhone explains the export options.
If storage is tight, record a short sample using the setting you plan to use and check its size in Photos. Consider how much footage you capture, available device and cloud storage, and the bandwidth and time needed to transfer or share it.
How do I change video recording quality on iPhone?
Start with the choices shown on your own device. Supported resolutions and frame rates vary by iPhone model; do not assume that every combination is available.

Apple notes that higher frame rates create larger files, and higher frame rates can also be played back more slowly in Photos. Choose a frame rate for the look or playback you need rather than treating it as a substitute for resolution.
Can I record in 4K and export at a lower resolution?
Yes. Apple’s iMovie guidance says you can export a movie at a lower resolution to reduce its file size, with a possible reduction in quality. This can be useful when an edit needs the source flexibility of a higher-resolution recording but the delivered file does not need to remain at that resolution.

For consistently smaller exports, Apple recommends choosing below 1080p, turning off HDR Video, and using High Efficiency. In Apple’s export guidance, 540p may suit social media and 360p may suit text messaging; those are suggestions for export use, not guarantees about what every service or recipient will accept. Check the destination’s requirements before exporting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is HDR the same choice as 4K versus 1080p?
No. HDR is a separate recording and playback consideration, not another resolution. On supported iPhones, Apple says HDR video can be shared with devices running iOS 13.4, iPadOS 13.4, or macOS 10.15.4 and later; other devices receive an SDR version. HDR Video can be switched off at Settings > Camera > Record Video on supported models. See Apple’s iPhone camera settings guide for model-dependent controls.
Other settings can also affect the footage. On supported models, Auto FPS can reduce frame rate to 24 fps in low light; enhanced stabilization slightly zooms in, and white-balance locking is available. These options vary by iPhone, so check the controls on your model when the footage looks different from what you expected.
When does ProRes or external storage matter?
For ordinary filming, ProRes and an external drive are usually unnecessary. Apple lists ProRes support on iPhone 13 Pro through iPhone 17 Pro models, with available resolution and frame-rate combinations depending on model and storage capacity. ProRes can be useful in a deliberate editing workflow, but its much larger files make it a poor default for casual clips.
Apple documents direct ProRes recording to USB-C external storage on iPhone 15 Pro, 16 Pro, and 17 Pro models. For that workflow, the drive must be exFAT formatted; Apple specifies a USB 3 cable rated at 10 Gbit/s. Its listed minimum drive write speeds are 220 MB/s for 4K at 60 fps and 440 MB/s for 4K at 120 fps. Confirm that your exact iPhone, selected recording mode, cable, and drive meet Apple’s requirements in Apple’s ProRes on iPhone guide.
Quick Recap
A simple way to decide for your next clip
- Use 1080p if you want a straightforward everyday recording and smaller files are a priority.
- Use 4K if you expect to crop or reframe, want to preserve more fine detail, or need a 4K output—and have room to store and move the footage.
- Before a long recording, check the available format on your iPhone and make a short test clip. Review its appearance and file size in the app or workflow where you expect to use it.
