If your iPhone screen is not responding to touch, first clean and check the screen, disconnect accessories, and temporarily remove the case or screen protector. Then restart the iPhone. If touch remains unreliable, update iOS only if you can do so safely; if the problem persists, contact Apple Support or arrange service. A touchscreen symptom by itself does not identify the cause.
1. Check the screen and remove possible interference
Apple recommends checking for debris or water and temporarily disconnecting accessories when a screen responds intermittently or is too sensitive.

- Clean the display and make sure it is dry and free of debris. A soft screen-cleaning cloth can help with this basic check; cleaning does not repair a hardware fault.
- Disconnect any Lightning or USB-C accessories, then test the screen again.
- Temporarily remove the case and screen protector and check whether touch response changes.
If touch works after you disconnect an accessory, Apple suggests trying a different outlet, cable, or charger before reconnecting it.

2. Restart the iPhone
If touch still works well enough to use the controls, restart the iPhone normally. If it is unresponsive, use the forced-restart sequence for its model. A forced restart restarts the phone; it is not a factory reset and is not described by Apple as erasing the device.

iPhones with Face ID
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. This may take longer than 10 seconds.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
- Hold the Side button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s and earlier
- Hold the Home button and the Side or Top button together until the Apple logo appears.
If the iPhone will not turn on, charge it and try again. If it still will not turn on, it may need service.
3. Update iOS only if you can do so
If the screen responds reliably enough to operate the phone, open Settings > General > Software Update. Back up the iPhone before updating. Apple says a standard iOS update keeps data and settings unchanged, but an update is software maintenance—not a guaranteed fix for a touchscreen fault.

You can also update through a computer using Apple’s instructions for your device and computer. This is not a workaround that can be assumed to work when the iPhone cannot be operated: the computer must recognize the device, and any required prompts must be available.

4. Contact Apple if the screen remains unreliable
If the screen still does not work after the basic checks and restart, contact Apple Support or arrange service. Apple Support’s guidance is: “If your screen still isn’t working, you might need to set up service for your device.” The symptom alone does not establish which component, if any, has failed.

5. Do not treat recovery-mode Restore as routine troubleshooting
Recovery mode is a separate option for certain startup or update-and-restore problems, not a first-line touchscreen check. Apple says that Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all data. Its recovery instructions advise trying Update first if you have not already done so. Do not choose Restore casually, particularly if you do not have a backup or need data on the phone.
