Apple says the bar can move slowly or appear static during an update, restore, or erase. If restarting does not help, connect the iPhone to a computer and choose Update in recovery mode before considering Restore, which erases the device.
1. Check whether the progress bar is still working
An Apple logo with a progress bar does not automatically mean the iPhone has frozen. During an update, restore, or erase, the bar may advance slowly or seem not to move for a while; timing depends on the operation and the files on the device. For an over-the-air update, keep the iPhone connected to power. Apple says that if the device appears on a computer and its content can be synced, the process is complete. Apple’s guidance on the logo and progress bar explains these cases.

Use the one-hour threshold only for the situation Apple specifies: a frozen Apple logo during a restore or migration. If that progress bar has not moved for at least one hour, proceed to the next step. Do not treat one hour as a universal waiting limit for every iOS update screen. 2. Force-restart the iPhone using its model’s buttons
A force restart does not require a computer. The button sequence depends on the iPhone generation. For iPhone 8 and later, including current models, use this sequence:

- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
For older models, use the matching sequence:
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: Press and hold the Side (or Sleep/Wake) button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 6s and earlier: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and Home button together until the Apple logo appears.
Apple’s iOS 27 iPhone guide confirms the Volume Up, Volume Down, then Side-button sequence for iPhone 8 and later. If the phone returns to the same stuck screen, use recovery mode.
3. Enter recovery mode and choose Update
Recovery mode lets a computer reinstall iOS. On iPhone 8 and later, connect the iPhone to the computer, then press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, and keep holding the Side button until the recovery-mode screen appears. Older models require their generation-specific button sequence; follow Apple’s recovery instructions for your model.

Use Finder on a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, iTunes on an older Mac, or Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows. If the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first. Update attempts to reinstall iOS without the intentional erase associated with Restore, though Apple does not guarantee it will succeed or preserve every possible data state.
Apple’s broader recovery guidance also identifies an Apple logo that remains for several minutes without a progress bar as a possible reason to use recovery mode. If a connection error appears, check the cable and connection; Apple recommends the supplied cable or another Apple-certified cable for certain listed USB errors. 4. Consider Restore only if you accept erasing the iPhone
Restore erases the iPhone. Do not select it unless you understand that consequence and are prepared for the possibility of losing data that is not otherwise available to recover. Apple advises trying Update first. If recovery mode cannot update or restore the iPhone, or a required button is broken or stuck, contact Apple service rather than repeatedly retrying the procedure. Apple’s recovery support page describes when service may be needed.

Apple’s current iOS 27 guide confirms the force-restart sequence, but the cited Apple troubleshooting pages describe general iPhone update, restore, and recovery behavior. They do not establish that iOS 27 introduced a distinct Apple-logo failure or a special fix. Use the troubleshooting steps according to what the screen shows and your iPhone model; do not assume the update itself caused a confirmed iOS 27 bug.
