The Shortcuts app lets you combine steps—called actions—into a named workflow that you can run with a tap, Siri, or a supported trigger. It can save repeated taps and move information between supported apps and services; you build it by choosing actions, arranging them, and trying the result. You do not need programming experience to start.
What is the Shortcuts app on iPhone?
Apple describes a shortcut as a quick way to get one or more tasks done with apps. A shortcut is a workflow; each action is one step. Actions can work with apps and content on Apple devices or with internet services, and information returned by one action can become input to a later one.

That could mean opening an app, finding an item, and sending it somewhere else. Apple’s examples include getting directions to a calendar event, moving text between apps, generating an expense report, and making and sending a GIF from recent photos. The exact actions available depend on the apps and services installed and supported in your country or region; not every app or service exposes Shortcuts actions.

Shortcuts can remain simple or become more involved with variables, conditions, repeats, lists, and web APIs. Those features are optional: a useful first shortcut may need only a few actions.

How do I make a shortcut on my iPhone?
- Explore examples: Open Shortcuts and select Gallery. Choose a familiar, low-stakes task, add a suggested shortcut, then open it to see which actions it uses. You can adjust an example rather than start from a blank workflow.
- Create a shortcut: Start a new shortcut in the app and give it a clear name that describes what it does, such as “Open my reading list.” Add a small number of actions from the action browser. Search for the outcome you want—terms such as “open,” “get,” or “send” can help—then arrange the actions in the order they should happen.
- Configure and run it: Set any options the actions ask for, then run the shortcut from its editor. Check what each step returns and whether later steps receive the information they need. If iPhone asks for data access, read the prompt and allow only what the intended workflow requires.
- Fix the first obstacle: If an action lacks an input or permission, address that before adding more steps. Keeping the first version small makes it easier to tell which action needs adjustment.
- Choose how to launch it: Once it works manually, pick an entry point that suits the task, such as the Shortcuts app, Siri, a widget, the Home Screen, or a supported share sheet. Availability varies by device, software version, and shortcut.
- Consider automation only after that: If the workflow should respond to a recurring event, create a personal automation and start with a low-risk trigger. Check whether it requires confirmation before relying on it.
What can I do with iPhone Shortcuts?
A shortcut is most useful when it removes steps you repeat or passes content between apps. For example, a workflow might accept selected text from a share sheet and then send it to another supported app. The available actions determine what is possible; a shortcut cannot control every app or online service.
More advanced shortcuts can use variables to retain information between actions, conditions to choose what happens next, and repeats to process multiple items. Some can work with lists or web APIs. These capabilities can make workflows more flexible, but they are not prerequisites for making a practical shortcut.

How can I run a shortcut?
Apple’s Shortcuts documentation lists several ways to launch shortcuts: from the Shortcuts app, Siri, the Home Screen, widgets, another app’s share sheet, Apple Watch, Control Center, the Action button on supported devices, Search, and Back Tap. These are supported options, not a guarantee that every surface is available on every iPhone or iOS version. Names and placement may also change between releases. Apple’s Shortcuts User Guide provides current instructions.
Shortcuts vs. personal automations: what is the difference?
A regular shortcut starts when you choose to run it—for example, by tapping it or invoking it with Siri. A personal automation starts in response to a trigger. Apple lists event types such as a time of day, arrival or departure, a message, a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, an app opening, battery level, or connecting a charger. The available trigger list and setup depend on software and device support; consult Apple’s automation instructions for current options.

| Question | Manual shortcut | Personal automation |
|---|---|---|
| How does it start? | You launch it with an available entry point, such as a tap, Siri, or a share sheet. | A supported event trigger starts it, such as a time or connection event. |
| Does it need confirmation? | You initiate the run. | Some automations can run without asking, but this is not universal. Individual actions may also need to be set to run automatically. |
| How should a beginner test it? | Run it yourself from the editor, where you can inspect its steps and results. | Begin with a low-risk trigger and check whether the trigger and its actions require confirmation. |
| Does it transfer to another device? | Shortcuts can be launched on supported surfaces and devices; availability varies. | Apple describes automations as specific to a device. They may be backed up to iCloud, but do not sync to other devices as active automations. |
For example, you might run a morning routine manually from a widget. A time-triggered version would be a personal automation, but whether it can run without confirmation depends on the trigger and its actions. Apple’s personal automation guide explains the current setup.
What should I know about Shortcuts privacy and safety?
When a shortcut needs access to data, Shortcuts asks permission. You can decide whether to allow access and later review or reset permissions in shortcut details. A shortcut may also require a setting that allows it to share large amounts of data; read the setting and the shortcut’s actions before enabling it. Apple’s privacy settings guide explains how to manage these controls.

Be cautious with shortcuts shared privately. Apple says it cannot verify the authenticity or behavior of privately shared shortcuts. Inspect unfamiliar actions before running them, and do not grant access unless it makes sense for the task. Sharing a shortcut through someone you know does not, by itself, establish what the shortcut will do.

Yes. Apple’s September 2025 iOS 26 feature document describes intelligent Shortcuts actions that can summarize text, create images, or use Apple Intelligence models to return responses to a workflow. Apple’s June 2026 WWDC session describes iOS 26 automation improvements, including new screenshot, keyboard-connection, and notification automation types, stored values, and a Use Model action that can access Apple Intelligence models and retrieve information from the web.

These are dated platform features, not guarantees for every iPhone. Availability can depend on iOS version, device capability, language, region, and Apple Intelligence availability. Check Apple’s iOS 26 feature document and WWDC26 Shortcuts session alongside current compatibility guidance before relying on a specific feature. The US App Store listing says the Shortcuts app requires iOS 12.0 or later, but that minimum does not mean every current feature works on every eligible device.
