“Preparing Update” is the stage between downloading an iPhone software update and installing it. Apple does not publish a normal duration for this stage, so there is no reliable minute-by-minute cutoff for deciding that it is stuck. If the screen is not progressing, first check whether the issue is actually the download, then work through Apple’s connection, storage and retry steps.
What “Preparing Update” means
Apple describes a software update as a sequence: the iPhone detects an available update, downloads and prepares it, then installs it. The preparation screen is therefore not the same as the download screen or the installation itself. Apple’s software update process guide does not specify a standard preparation time or a universal reason that this stage might take longer.

For a wireless update, the iPhone downloads the components needed to complete the update rather than a full copy of iOS. A computer-connected update downloads a full copy. Apple says download time depends on the update’s size and the internet connection; that guidance does not establish how long preparation should take.

During a download, Apple says you can continue using the iPhone and will be notified when the update is ready to install. A slow download can reflect the update’s size or internet speed. If the screen has already changed to “Preparing Update,” the download stage has passed, but Apple does not provide a separate timer for what follows.

Apple also notes that devices check for updates when a person opens Software Update, every 24 hours, or after a restart. That is the update-detection schedule, not an estimate of download or preparation time.
What to check before trying the update again
- Compatibility: Confirm that the iPhone model supports the iOS release being offered.
- Available storage: The update needs enough free space. Apple says iOS may temporarily remove app data to make room without deleting personal information. You can also enable Offload Unused Apps or remove apps yourself.
- Connection: Use Wi-Fi and avoid downloading other content while updating. If an alert says the update server cannot be reached, or a download fails, try another network.
- Power: Keep the iPhone connected to power during a wireless installation. If it runs out of power, connect it to power and turn it on so the update or restore can continue.

Retry a wireless update that will not complete
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find the iOS update in the list and tap it, then choose Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
If the retry still fails, try another Wi-Fi network. Apple also directs users to update using a Mac or iTunes when the wireless update will not complete.
When a computer or recovery guidance may be needed
A computer-based update is an alternative if the wireless route keeps failing. It uses a full copy of iOS or iPadOS, unlike the component-based download used for an over-the-air update. Apple does not say that the wired route is always faster, so treat it as another method rather than a speed guarantee.

If a computer does not recognize the iPhone, or the iPhone shows the Apple logo for several minutes without a progress bar, Apple points to its recovery-mode guidance. Follow Apple’s current instructions for the specific screen and device; do not choose an erase or restore option without first considering whether you have a backup.
