iPhone Pro vs. Pro Max: What to Check Before Buying Used or Refurbished

Pro or Pro Max? Compare the exact generation and inspect the individual phone: Activation Lock, battery, parts history, carrier lock, cameras, and seller terms matter as much as the model name.

Compare the exact iPhone generation first: Pro and Pro Max can differ in size, camera features, and regional SIM configuration, and those differences are not identical from year to year. Then inspect the particular phone’s battery, parts history, carrier status, Activation Lock, and seller terms. Apple’s rule on the biggest deal-breaker is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.”

Compare the exact generation, not just the name

“Pro” and “Pro Max” identify different sizes within an iPhone generation, but specifications can change between generations and regions. Compare the two exact models you are considering on Apple’s specifications pages; do not assume a camera, battery, or SIM feature carries over from one year to another.

Size and handling

The Pro Max is the larger option. Compare the display diagonal, overall dimensions, and weight, and consider one-handed use and carrying comfort. If possible, hold the actual model before buying: the larger display may be welcome for viewing, but size is a daily-use trade-off.

Camera

Check the generation-specific camera system, especially whether the telephoto camera or optical zoom differs. For example, Apple’s US refurbished listing describes the iPhone 15 Pro Max as having a 5x Telephoto camera; that is a model-specific fact, not a specification to apply to every Pro Max. On the phone itself, test each available lens and inspect photos for focus and clarity.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro, 128GB, Black Titanium - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.

Battery and price

Use the manufacturer’s battery estimate only to compare new-device specifications for the exact generation. It does not predict the runtime of a used phone with a worn battery. Compare the prices of the same generation, storage capacity, and condition, then factor in the seller’s battery standard, warranty, return period, and any likely repair cost. Apple lists up to 29 hours of video playback for the US refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max; that is Apple’s estimate for that model, not a used-device guarantee.

SIM and region

Confirm both the carrier lock and the exact model’s physical SIM and eSIM support. Apple’s cited US iPhone 15 Pro Max listing says that model uses dual eSIM and does not support physical SIM cards. Do not assume that configuration applies to another region or generation; check it against your carrier and travel needs.

Check the phone before paying—or within the return window

Ask the seller about damage, battery condition, and repairs or replaced parts. For an online purchase, complete the checks promptly while you can still use the stated return terms.

  1. Confirm it can be erased and activated. Have the owner remove the phone from their account and disable Activation Lock before paying in person. Apple Support says, “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If an online phone arrives locked to its owner, Apple advises returning it.
  2. Inspect its exterior and charging. Look over the display, sides, back, and charging connector for damage, dents, scratches, or debris. Turn the phone on and connect a charger; Apple advises not buying a phone that will not charge.
  3. Review model and parts information. Open Settings > General > About to check the model and iOS version. If shown, review Parts and Service History. Apple says this section may be available on iOS 15.2 or later, depending on the model and whether a part has been replaced. “Genuine Apple Part” has a defined meaning; “Unknown” may indicate an incomplete installation, a nongenuine or previously used part, or a part that is not functioning as expected.
  4. Check battery health and messages. On newer iOS versions, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. Review maximum capacity and any important service messages. Maximum capacity is useful evidence, but Apple does not set a universal acceptable percentage for every second-hand buyer. Battery health information may not be available for an unknown or nongenuine battery.
  5. Check the carrier lock. Go to Settings > General > About > Network Provider Lock. “No SIM restrictions” means the phone is unlocked; a named provider means it is limited to that provider. Confirm the status works for your intended carrier.
  6. Test everyday functions. Connect to Wi-Fi and test the buttons. Try the cameras in bright and low light, including telephoto and ultra-wide cameras where present; record and play back a video.

Compare the seller’s terms, not just the condition label

“Refurbished” does not by itself promise a particular battery, replacement-parts policy, warranty, or return period. Get the seller’s terms in writing and check that the device description matches the phone offered.

  • 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display featuring Always-On & ProMotion.
  • Battery: Ask whether it is original or replaced, and what minimum condition the seller promises.
  • Parts and repairs: Ask what was repaired or replaced and whether the seller discloses nongenuine or previously used parts.
  • Warranty and returns: Check duration, coverage, return deadline, and any exclusions before ordering.
  • Condition: Make sure the cosmetic grade and disclosed damage match what you receive.
  • Activation and carrier status: Ensure it is not Activation Locked and that its carrier and SIM configuration suit your needs.

What Apple Certified Refurbished means for the cited listing

Apple’s US listing for a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max says refurbished iPhone models include a new battery and outer shell, the same one-year warranty as a new iPhone, a 14-day return policy, and the option to purchase AppleCare. These are terms on that Apple listing; they are not automatic benefits of a third-party refurbisher or private sale.
