You can export photos and videos directly from an iPhone to compatible external storage using Apple’s Photos app. Connect the drive, select the items, choose Export Unmodified Original, then save them to the drive in Files. The exact setup depends on whether your iPhone has USB-C or Lightning, and on the drive’s format, partitioning, and power needs.
Before you connect the Seagate drive
A Seagate label alone does not guarantee that a particular drive will work directly with every iPhone. Check the drive model’s connection requirements, then confirm the following iPhone and storage conditions.

- Match the connection to your iPhone. USB-C iPhones need a compatible USB-C connection. For a Lightning iPhone, Apple names its Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter as a connection option. An adapter for Lightning is not for USB-C iPhones. Apple’s connection guidance and adapter guidance describe the relevant options.
- Check the drive format and partition layout. Apple requires a single data partition and supports APFS, encrypted APFS, macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT, FAT32, and FAT for external storage connected to iPhone. A drive that does not meet these requirements may not appear in Files. Apple lists the supported formats and partition requirement.
- Account for power. Some external hard drives need more power than the iPhone connection supplies. Apple describes using a powered USB hub with a USB-C iPhone when the drive lacks its own power, or connecting the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter to a USB power adapter for a Lightning iPhone. Apple’s connection instructions explain these power options.
Seagate says its consumer drives are generally formatted as exFAT, but that computer-oriented information does not verify compatibility for every drive model or iPhone setup. Seagate’s USB-C iPhone guidance specifically covers many LaCie devices, not every Seagate-branded drive. Check the exact model’s specifications if compatibility is uncertain. Seagate’s USB-C iPhone and iPad guidance and its consumer operating-system requirements make those distinctions.

Connect the drive and check that iPhone recognizes it
- Connect the drive to the iPhone using a compatible cable or adapter. If the drive needs external power, connect that as well.
- Open Files, tap Browse, and look under Locations for the external drive. Apple uses Files to display supported connected storage. See Apple’s instructions for viewing external storage.
- If the drive is not listed, check the connector and adapter, power, supported file system, and single-partition requirement before trying the export again.
Export photos and videos from Photos
- Open Photos and select the photos and videos you want to copy.
- Tap Share, then choose Export Unmodified Original.
- In the location picker, select the external drive under Locations, then tap Save.
- After the export finishes, open the destination in Files and check that the items are there before deleting anything from the iPhone.
Apple’s documented Photos workflow exports the unmodified originals. If you edited a photo in Photos, this command does not export the edited rendering. Locked items in the Hidden album are not transferred. Apple’s current import and export instructions cover both limitations.

If iCloud Photos stores your originals
If iCloud Photos is enabled and the full-resolution originals are not downloaded to the iPhone, select Download and Keep Originals before exporting. Allow the originals to download, then follow the Photos export steps. Apple does not specify a fixed download or transfer time, so the wait depends on the library and connection. Apple’s iCloud archive guidance explains the setting.

The drive does not appear under Locations
- Check that the cable, adapter, and drive connector match the iPhone’s port.
- Confirm that the drive uses a supported file system and has a single data partition.
- Connect required external power, or use the appropriate powered hub or adapter setup.
- Open Files and check Browse under Locations again.
The drive disconnects or the export fails
Check the cable connection and whether the drive needs more power. Apple provides general power guidance, but the power needs of a particular Seagate model depend on that model’s specifications.

The exported photo does not show my edits
Export Unmodified Original is designed to export the original file, not the edited version shown in Photos. The export itself is behaving as intended; the resulting file is not a rendered copy of your edits.

A Seagate app is suggested
Seagate Toolkit is not available for iOS or iPadOS, and Seagate’s Mobile Backup app has been discontinued. Neither is needed for Apple’s direct Photos export process. Seagate’s USB-C guidance, Toolkit feature information, and Mobile Backup notice describe their availability.
