Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo put iPhone pictures on a computer, either import them with a USB cable or use iCloud Photos to keep them available across devices. Use a wired import for a separate, one-time copy; use iCloud Photos for automatic syncing. The steps differ slightly for Mac and Windows.
Choose the method that fits
| Method | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| USB import | Copying a selected group or library to one computer | Requires a cable that transfers data. You choose where imported files are saved. |
| iCloud Photos | Keeping the photo library available across supported devices and computers | Syncing uses iCloud storage and an internet connection. Syncing is not the same as creating a separate backup copy. |
| AirDrop (Mac only) | Quickly sending selected photos to a Mac | Useful for a small batch; for a larger library, use USB import or iCloud Photos. |
For a wired transfer, check that your cable supports data transfer and that its connectors work with both your iPhone and computer. The connector type depends on the models involved.

Import photos to a Mac with a cable
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a compatible USB cable, unlock the iPhone, and allow the accessory if prompted. Tap Trust if the iPhone asks whether to trust the computer.
- Open the Photos app on the Mac. Select the iPhone in the sidebar if the Import screen does not appear automatically.
- Choose a destination album if you want one, select the photos to import, and start the import.
- Wait until the import finishes before disconnecting the iPhone.
To import directly into a Mac folder instead of the Photos library, Apple also lists Image Capture as an option. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad photo-transfer instructions.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Import photos to a Windows PC with a cable
- Install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store, as Apple instructs.
- Connect the iPhone using a data-capable USB cable. Unlock it and tap Trust or Allow if prompted.
- Open Microsoft Photos, select Import, then choose the connected iPhone.
- Follow the prompts to select pictures and choose where to save them. Wait for the import to complete before disconnecting.
Apple Devices and Microsoft Photos have complementary roles in this process: install Apple Devices as directed by Apple, then use Microsoft Photos for the import. Microsoft documents these steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s phone-to-PC import instructions and Apple’s transfer instructions.

Use iCloud Photos for ongoing access
When iCloud Photos is enabled, photos sync to supported Apple devices, iCloud.com, and Windows. If syncing has finished, there is no need to import the same library from one iCloud-connected device to another just to make it available there. Check that your iCloud account has enough storage for the library.
On Windows, use iCloud for Windows to access photos stored in iCloud. A USB import only sees what is available on the iPhone; Apple says full-resolution originals must be downloaded to the iPhone first for Windows USB import. Microsoft also notes that photos stored in iCloud but not on the phone may need to be accessed through iCloud for Windows. The relevant setup and transfer details are in Apple Support and Microsoft Support.

Send selected photos to a Mac with AirDrop
For a few selected items, Apple lists AirDrop as a way to send photos from an iPhone to a Mac. Select the photos on the iPhone, use the Share option, and choose the Mac shown as an AirDrop recipient. For an entire library or a planned separate copy, use the wired import or iCloud workflow instead.

Make future iPhone photos easier to open on Windows
For future captures, go to Settings > Camera > Formats on the iPhone and choose Most Compatible. Apple says this saves new photos as JPEG and videos as H.264 for better Windows compatibility. It does not convert files already captured.

Fix common transfer problems
- The computer does not detect the iPhone: Unlock the phone and respond to any Trust or Allow prompt. If it is still not detected, try another cable that supports data transfer; charging capability alone does not establish that a cable transfers files.
- Some photos are missing from a Windows cable import: Check whether the full-resolution originals are downloaded to the iPhone. If the items are stored only in iCloud, access them through iCloud for Windows instead.
- You are unsure where imported files went: Review the destination selected in the import prompts. Mac Photos imports into its library; Image Capture lets you import to a folder.
