Dolby vs DTS: What to Know Before Choosing a Sound Format

Dolby and DTS do not have one universal sound-quality winner. Compare equivalent formats, soundtrack mixes, device support, connections, and speaker layouts.

Neither Dolby nor DTS is always better. The names cover different formats and processing technologies, so a useful comparison matches equivalent tiers: Dolby Digital with DTS for conventional surround, Dolby TrueHD with DTS-HD Master Audio for lossless disc audio, and Dolby Atmos with DTS:X for immersive sound. The soundtrack mix, your player, receiver or soundbar, connection, and speaker layout all affect what you hear.

First, what does “Dolby Surround” mean?

“Dolby Surround” is not a catch-all name for every Dolby audio format. Dolby uses the term for surround sound generally and also names a cinema format Dolby Surround 7.1. Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, and Dolby Atmos are distinct formats in the wider Dolby family, with different capabilities and uses. Check the exact format named for a soundtrack rather than treating all Dolby labels as interchangeable. Dolby’s surround-sound guide explains the distinctions.

Comparison What it tells you What it does not tell you
Dolby Digital and DTS Conventional surround formats. Dolby describes Dolby Digital Plus as a lossy format based on Dolby Digital 5.1; compatible equipment may support 5.1 or 7.1 channels, depending on the program. The format name alone does not establish which soundtrack mix will sound better to you.
Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio Relevant lossless disc-audio formats to compare. Sony’s STR-ZA810ES help table lists up to 7.1 decoded channels for each over HDMI/eARC. Sony’s figures apply to that receiver model; they do not establish universal device support or a listening-quality winner.
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Immersive formats that can place sound in three-dimensional space, subject to the content and playback system. Different format approaches and vendor specifications do not prove that one sounds better in every room or on every system.

Dolby’s technical page gives Dolby Digital Plus a data-rate range of 32 kbps to 6 Mbps and says it can support 7.1-channel surround at 384 kbps. These are Dolby’s codec capability figures, not measurements of a particular DTS soundtrack or evidence that a higher rate will sound better in a specific comparison. How Atmos and DTS:X handle immersive sound

Dolby Atmos

Dolby describes Atmos as using audio objects and metadata to position sounds, including overhead effects, rather than tying every sound solely to a fixed channel. Dolby says the format supports up to 128 simultaneous audio objects and that an AV receiver can adapt a cinema mix to home speaker layouts. These are Dolby’s format claims, not independent comparative test results. Dolby’s Atmos for the Home overview.

  • HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.

DTS:X

DTS describes DTS:X as adapting to practically any symmetrical speaker layout. Its current product page states decode and playback capability up to 5.1.4 for streaming and up to 7.1.4 for optical disc. Those are DTS-stated capabilities; the actual limits depend on the source and compatible playback equipment. DTS:X product information.

Those different design descriptions are useful when matching a format to a system, but neither is proof of a universal sound-quality advantage. The mix, number and placement of speakers, and the way a receiver renders the content all matter.

Why device and connection support can decide the result

A format only helps if the content carries it, the source can output it, and the receiver or soundbar can decode it through a supported connection. For Blu-ray Atmos playback, Dolby describes connecting a disc player to an Atmos-capable AVR by HDMI and setting the player to bitstream output. Dolby also notes that home Atmos content is available on Blu-ray and through streaming; individual catalogues and devices vary. Dolby’s Atmos home guidance.

Support is model-specific. For example, Sony’s STR-ZA810ES help table lists Dolby Digital and DTS at 5.1 through coaxial/optical, HDMI, eARC, or ARC; Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio at 7.1 through HDMI/eARC; and DTS:X layouts including 5.1.2 or 7.1.2 through HDMI/eARC. This is an example for one receiver, not a market-wide standard. Check the manual for your exact TV, player, receiver, or soundbar. Sony STR-ZA810ES format support table.

How to decide for your setup

  1. Identify the soundtrack. Check the disc packaging or streaming title details for the exact format—such as Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, Atmos, or DTS:X.
  2. Check the source output. Confirm that the disc player or streaming device can output that format. For a Blu-ray Atmos path, Dolby’s guidance describes HDMI bitstream output to an Atmos-capable AVR.
  3. Check the decoder and connection. Consult the exact receiver or soundbar manual for format decoding and supported inputs. Do not assume a label on one device guarantees that the full source-to-speaker chain passes the signal.
  4. Match the speaker layout. Confirm what channels or height speakers your system can render, and whether your device supports the relevant layout for the format.
  5. Compare the actual mixes. If both versions are available, listen at matched volume on the same system. A different mix or level can affect preference; the cited format specifications do not establish which version sounds better.

Does DTS sound better because of bitrate?

Not as a general rule. The material cited here describes formats, capabilities, and device compatibility; it does not provide a controlled listening test showing that Dolby or DTS always sounds better. Nor does a codec’s published data rate by itself predict how a particular soundtrack will sound. Compare the specific versions on compatible equipment instead of choosing by logo or one specification.

What to check before buying equipment

  • The formats supported by your regular discs and streaming sources.
  • The precise Dolby and DTS formats the device decodes—not just a general surround-sound claim.
  • Supported HDMI, eARC, ARC, and optical connections for the formats you want to pass through or decode.
  • The channel and speaker layouts supported by the device, especially if you want height effects.
  • For an integrated soundbar setup, separate confirmation of Atmos and DTS:X support if both matter to you.
