To make new iPhone photos take up less space, use High Efficiency (HEIF) and, on supported models, choose 12 MP instead of 24 MP. To free space on the phone without reducing the quality of your full-resolution library, turn on iCloud Photos with Optimize Storage. These choices solve different problems: capture settings affect new files, while Optimize Storage reduces local copies but leaves the originals in iCloud.
Choose what you want to reduce
There are three different kinds of photo storage to consider:

- New photo file size: Choose a more efficient format or lower resolution before taking pictures.
- Space used on the iPhone: Optimize Storage can replace local full-resolution copies with smaller versions when needed.
- Space used by the full library: Review, transfer, or delete items. Changing the phone’s local copies alone does not shrink the full library stored in iCloud.
For a quick check, open Settings > General > iPhone Storage and review your iCloud storage usage as well. Apple’s storage guidance also covers recommendations, duplicate merging, transfer, and deletion: Manage your photo and video storage.
Set smaller file sizes for new photos
Use HEIF for efficient everyday photos
Apple says HEIF compresses images more efficiently than JPEG while preserving the same visual quality. On supported iPhones, go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select High Efficiency. This affects new captures, not photos already in your library.

Choose Most Compatible instead if you regularly move photos to older devices or software that may not support HEIF; new photos are then saved as JPEG. Apple says sharing may provide a compatible JPEG or H.264 version when the receiving device cannot handle HEIF or HEVC, but conversion depends on the sharing method and recipient. iCloud Photos preserves the original format and resolution. Choose 12 MP when you do not need the extra detail
On iPhone models that show Photo Mode resolution controls, open Settings > Camera > Formats > Photo Mode and choose 12 MP rather than 24 MP to reduce the resolution of new photos. Lower resolution means less image detail and generally smaller files; the trade-off is less room for tight cropping or enlargement.

Available settings vary by model and iOS version. Use the options shown on your device rather than assuming every iPhone offers the same resolution choices. Apple’s advanced camera settings guide explains the supported controls.

Use 48 MP and ProRAW selectively
On supported models, enable Resolution Control or ProRAW & Resolution Control under Settings > Camera > Formats to access 48 MP capture. It can retain more detail for cropping, but larger files use storage faster. For routine snapshots, leave RAW off unless you specifically need its additional editing latitude.

Apple’s approximate figures, published in 2024, are 25 MB for a 12 MP ProRAW photo and 75 MB for a 48 MP ProRAW photo; Apple also says ProRAW files are 10 to 12 times larger than HEIF or JPEG. These are product estimates, not guaranteed sizes for every image. Apple says 48 MP ProRAW is limited to the main camera at 1x; Ultra Wide, Telephoto, Night mode, flash, and macro photos can only be saved at 12 MP. Details are in About Apple ProRAW.

Free iPhone space without shrinking the iCloud library
If your goal is to make room on the phone while retaining the full-resolution library, enable iCloud Photos and Optimize Storage. Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos, turn on iCloud Photos, then select Optimize iPhone Storage if that option appears. Apple’s setup instructions describe a newer iPhone Storage step on later iOS versions; iOS 26 or earlier presents Optimize Storage directly. Follow the labels shown on your device.

With Optimize Storage, full-resolution originals stay in iCloud and smaller, space-saving versions remain on the iPhone as needed. You can download originals over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them. This saves device storage, not iCloud capacity: the complete library still takes up iCloud space. Reduce the size of the collection itself
Review before deleting
Use the storage recommendations and duplicate review options Apple provides to identify content you do not need. Merging duplicates can remove redundant copies while retaining a single item. If you want to keep photos or videos but remove them from iCloud, transfer them to a computer first and verify that the transferred copies open correctly.
Understand what deletion does
When iCloud Photos is on, deleting a photo or video on one device deletes it from the iCloud Photos library and other devices using that library. Apple says accidentally deleted items can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days. Make a separate backup before a broad cleanup: Apple notes that photos uploaded to iCloud Photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup.
Transferring or deleting can reduce the footprint of the collection in a way Optimize Storage does not. Keep a verified copy of anything you may want to retain before removing it from a synced library.
