Your iPhone passcode unlocks and helps protect one device. Your Apple Account password signs you in to Apple services such as iCloud and the App Store. They are different credentials, though Apple may ask for your iPhone passcode when you reset your Apple Account password on a trusted iPhone.
What does each credential unlock?
| Credential | Scope | Where you typically use it | Primary job |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone passcode | A particular iPhone | The iPhone lock screen and, depending on the action and settings, certain device prompts | Unlocks the device and can authenticate some sensitive actions |
| Apple Account password | Your Apple Account and its services | Apple service sign-ins, including iCloud, the App Store, Apple Music, iMessage and FaceTime | Signs you in to your account |
Apple formerly called an Apple Account an Apple ID. The account password is not the normal screen-unlock credential, and knowing it does not generally let you substitute it for the iPhone passcode. The exact prompts for device actions vary with settings, iOS version and security features. Apple’s guide to Apple Account passwords and guidance on changing a password on iPhone describe their distinct roles.

Why does my iPhone passcode appear when I change my Apple Account password?
On a trusted iPhone that is already signed in to your account, Apple can use that device’s passcode to authenticate a password change. It is local proof that you are using a device associated with the account; it does not make the passcode and account password interchangeable. Apple says a security delay may apply to some password changes or critical security settings.

Reset the password from a trusted iPhone
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Sign-In & Security, then Change Password.
- Follow the prompts and, when requested, enter the iPhone passcode.
If you cannot use a trusted device, Apple documents other account-recovery options in its Apple Account password guidance. Recovery procedures and security delays can vary; do not assume every reset is immediate.
#1 Best Overall
- Nothing on the Door: The lock body sits inside the cabinet and the keypad lives somewhere else entirely. The front of your cabinet stays exactly as your cabinetmaker built it: no drilled hole, no plastic panel on the wood. This preserves the original appearance of the drawer and makes it more beautiful.
- Put the Keypad Where You Want It: The panel is fully wireless and slim enough to pass for a light switch. Mount it on a wall, inside a closet, or on the side of the cabinet, anywhere indoors within range. One panel pairs with one lock.
- About 6,000 Openings on 2 AA Batteries (Not include): The hidden lock warns you when the cells run low and still gives roughly 100 more openings, so it never strands you. The panel lifts off its mount and recharges over USB-C. AA batteries not included.
- Wireless Remote Panel: Fingerprint, RFID card, passcode, phone over NFC, iOS Watch or Phone App, Everyone in the house gets their own way in, and no one has to hunt for a key.
- The App Is Optional: Unlock by finger, card or code with your phone off or in another room. Open the eSmartlock app (iOS and Android) only when you want a temporary code for a guest, an extra user, or a look at the unlock history.
How Apple Account sign-in verification works
A password may not be the only step when you sign in to an Apple Account. With two-factor authentication enabled, signing in on a new device requires an additional verification step, such as a code or approval through a trusted device. That verification is separate from both the Apple Account password and the iPhone passcode. See Apple’s explanation of two-factor authentication.
What to do if you forgot a password or your account is locked
If you forgot your Apple Account password
If possible, use a trusted Apple device already signed in to the account and follow the Settings path above. If you do not have one, use the recovery options Apple lists in its password-reset guidance. A device passcode is not a universal solution for every account recovery situation.

If your Apple Account is locked or disabled
An account lock or disablement can prevent sign-in to Apple services. Follow the instructions in the alert you receive; Apple directs users to reset the password or request account access, depending on the situation. The iPhone passcode alone does not resolve every account lockout. See Apple’s guidance for a locked or disabled Apple Account.
Recovery contacts, stolen phones and keeping credentials private
A recovery contact helps with account recovery—not device access
A recovery contact can give you a recovery code to use when recovering your account, but does not get access to the account or unlock your iPhone. If you use Advanced Data Protection, a recovery contact may also help you regain access to end-to-end encrypted iCloud data. Details are in Apple’s recovery-contact guidance.

Protect a phone whose passcode may be known
Someone who knows your iPhone passcode may pose a risk if the phone is stolen. Stolen Device Protection adds security requirements before certain critical account or device changes can be made, particularly when the iPhone is away from familiar locations such as home or work. The specific requirements depend on the feature and circumstances. Apple explains them in its Stolen Device Protection guide.
Do not share either credential or verification details
Apple’s guidance is explicit: “Never give your Apple Account password, verification codes, device passcode, recovery key, or any account security details to anyone else.” Read Security and your Apple Account for Apple’s advice.
