The right choice depends on the storage you need, the camera and display features you will use, your preferred size, and whether you are paying the full unlocked price or accepting a carrier contract.
Use the prices below as a starting point, then compare equivalent storage capacities and the exact features that matter to you. Apple’s prices are US starting prices before tax; local pricing, financing, trade-in credits and carrier plans can change the final total.

Apple’s current iPhone lineup and starting prices
The table shows Apple US starting prices listed in 2026. These are vendor prices for the current lineup, not guaranteed street prices or prices in other countries. The storage capacity attached to each starting price is not fully identified in the available shop-page summary, so confirm the configuration at checkout before comparing two phones.

| Model | Apple US starting price | Price above iPhone 17e | What the price position tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e | $699 | Baseline | Lowest-priced current model; a sensible first shortlist for budget buyers. |
| iPhone 16 | $799 | $100 | A modest step up when its listed feature differences match your needs. |
| iPhone 17 | $899 | $200 | Mid-range current option for buyers who want the features Apple assigns to this generation. |
| iPhone Air | $1,099 | $400 | Premium pricing that needs to be justified by its particular design or hardware benefits. |
| iPhone 18 Pro | $1,199 | $500 | Professional-tier pricing for buyers who will use the Pro camera, display or performance features listed by Apple. |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | $1,199 | $500 | Same listed starting price as iPhone 18 Pro; choose between them by size and the specifications you prefer. |
| iPhone Duo | $1,999 | $1,300 | Foldable-display model; its value depends almost entirely on whether that form factor solves a real problem for you. |
The $100 steps from iPhone 17e to iPhone 16 and from iPhone 16 to iPhone 17 are useful comparison points, but they do not prove that the more expensive model is a better deal. A phone is better value only when the additional hardware, storage or convenience replaces something you would otherwise buy or gives you a capability you will actually use.

Quick recommendations by buyer need
Lowest sensible upfront cost: iPhone 17e
Start with iPhone 17e if your priority is the lowest current Apple price and you are comfortable with the features and storage offered in the configuration you select. It is the natural baseline for calls, messaging, web use, everyday apps and general smartphone ownership, but those tasks alone do not establish that it will meet your camera, display or storage requirements. Open Apple’s model specifications and check every feature you consider essential before ordering.
Best value when you can spend a little more: compare iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 directly
At their listed starting prices, iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 are separated by $100. That is small enough that the better value can change with a sale, a storage upgrade or a feature you use daily. Compare the two at the same capacity, then ask whether the newer model’s listed camera, screen, connectivity or performance differences will matter for the length of time you plan to keep it. If not, the lower-priced configuration may be the more rational purchase.
Premium experience without a fold: iPhone Air or an 18 Pro model
iPhone Air and the iPhone 18 Pro models sit in a premium price band. Select one only after identifying a specific benefit in Apple’s specifications: a display characteristic, a camera-system capability, a performance feature, a preferred size or another function you will use repeatedly. If you cannot name the benefit, the cheaper models are likely to deliver better value.
Largest screen flexibility or foldable design: iPhone Duo
iPhone Duo is the only model in this lineup identified as having a folding display. That makes it a form-factor purchase rather than a routine upgrade. It can be good value for someone who will regularly use the extra screen flexibility, but the $1,999 starting price is difficult to justify for buyers who simply want a conventional phone with strong everyday performance.
How to calculate the real cost before you choose
Compare like-for-like storage
Starting prices can hide a meaningful difference in capacity. A phone that appears cheaper may become more expensive once you select enough storage for your photos, videos, downloaded media and apps. Choose the capacity you genuinely need for each model, not the smallest capacity shown in an advertisement, and compare the resulting checkout totals.
- Estimate how much space your current phone uses now.
- Add room for the photos and videos you expect to create during your ownership period.
- Include offline music, films, games and large professional or creative apps if you use them.
- Compare the same capacity across models before calling one a bargain.
The available Apple shop summary does not identify the exact storage tier behind every starting price in the table. Treat each figure as a starting point and verify the capacity, color and configuration on the live product page.
Separate cash price, financing and carrier credits
An unlocked purchase gives you a clear cost: the configured phone price, tax and any accessories. Monthly financing divides that cost but does not necessarily reduce it. A carrier advertisement may show a large credit that depends on an eligible trade-in, a particular plan, a required installment period or a new-line activation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Calculate the total in one currency and over one period:
- Write down the phone’s configured retail price.
- Add sales tax, activation charges and any required accessories.
- Subtract only a trade-in amount you are certain you qualify for after the carrier checks the device.
- Add every monthly service charge required to receive promotional bill credits.
- Include the remaining device balance if you cancel, change plans or leave before the credit period ends.
Apple’s listed carrier promotions are conditional. A headline credit is not an unconditional discount, so compare the full plan and trade-in terms with the outright unlocked price.
Compare the features that affect value
Size and form factor
Apple’s comparison page lists screen dimensions for the current models and identifies iPhone Duo as a folding-display phone. Numbers on a specification sheet do not tell you whether a phone feels comfortable in one hand, fits your pocket or works well for typing. If size is important, handle the actual model before buying, particularly when choosing between the two Pro models or considering a foldable design.
Think about your dominant use:
- A compact-feeling device is easier to use one-handed and may be more comfortable in a pocket.
- A larger conventional screen is useful for reading, editing documents, navigation and video.
- A folding display can provide more working area without being permanently as wide, but it introduces a different hinge and handling experience.
Do not pay for a larger or folding screen merely because it is more expensive. Pay when it solves a daily problem you can describe.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCamera systems
Apple’s model specifications show that the camera systems differ across the lineup. The useful question is not which model has the longest feature list; it is which camera capability changes your results or workflow.
- Everyday snapshots: Compare the standard camera features and image-processing options on the models you can afford.
- Travel and family photography: Look for the lenses, framing options and video controls you would actually use, then consider how much storage those files require.
- Creative or professional work: A Pro model may be justified when its listed camera controls, display characteristics or processing features replace a separate camera workflow.
- Video-heavy use: Check supported recording modes and storage requirements rather than assuming a higher price automatically means better footage.
Apple’s specifications establish the hardware and supported modes. They do not establish superior real-world image quality in every scene, so avoid treating a specification difference as a guaranteed photographic result.

Battery expectations
Apple publishes video-playback estimates and describes its test conditions in footnotes. These are useful for comparing Apple’s own claims, but they are not promises of everyday runtime. Screen brightness, cellular reception, gaming, camera use, navigation and background activity can change endurance substantially.
Use the estimates as one input:
- Read the same Apple test category for every model you are considering.
- Check whether your routine is closer to video playback, mixed app use or intensive camera and gaming use.
- Value a larger battery claim only if it reduces charging interruptions in your routine.
Storage and long-term ownership
Storage is a permanent part of the purchase, while cloud subscriptions and external transfers add recurring effort or cost. A lower-priced phone with too little capacity can become frustrating long before its hardware is worn out. Conversely, paying for storage you never use does not improve value.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple’s published pages reviewed here do not establish a comparative software-support end date for these models. Do not choose one on the assumption that a particular model is guaranteed to receive updates for a stated number of years. Instead, buy enough capacity, protect the device, and use Apple’s current support information when you are ready to purchase.
Premium features
Premium models make sense when their distinctive features are central to your use. The Pro models are aimed at buyers who value the camera, display or performance capabilities Apple lists. iPhone Air requires the same discipline: identify the feature that earns its premium. iPhone Duo is even more specialized because its defining benefit is the folding display.
If two models perform your important tasks equally well, keep the difference in your bank account or use it for higher storage, protection and repairs. A feature you never activate has no practical value, regardless of its position in the lineup.
Model-by-model value analysis
iPhone 17e: the baseline to beat
Because it has the lowest current starting price, iPhone 17e should be your reference point. List the features you require, select the storage you need and check whether the resulting configuration satisfies them. Move up only when the next model supplies a clearly relevant improvement.

It is less compelling if you already know you need a specific camera system, a larger display or a premium performance feature that is absent from the configuration you are considering.
iPhone 16: a $100 decision
iPhone 16 sits one listed price step above the entry model. Treat the difference as a feature decision, not a status upgrade. Compare equivalent storage and read Apple’s detailed specifications for the camera, display, wireless features and other hardware that matter to you.
This model can be the value winner when its specific advantages prevent you from compromising on a daily task. It can also be poor value if you select it only because it is more expensive and assume that the extra cost guarantees a visibly better experience.
iPhone 17: the middle-ground comparison
iPhone 17 occupies the center of the current conventional lineup. It is worth comparing against both iPhone 16 and the premium models, especially if you keep phones for several years. The deciding test is whether its listed generation-specific features are useful enough to justify the next price step after you have matched storage.
Buyers who want a current model but do not need the specialized form factor of iPhone Duo or the full Pro tier should give this model a careful look. Do not assume that “middle” means best; verify the features you will use.
iPhone Air: premium value depends on its distinctive design
iPhone Air is priced above the mainstream models, so it needs a clear purpose in your shortlist. Consider its dimensions, weight, display and other characteristics as listed by Apple, then decide whether those traits improve your daily use enough to warrant the premium.
If your priority is simply reliable calls, messaging, photos and apps, the lower tiers may leave more money for storage or accessories. If the Air’s particular design is the reason you are upgrading, compare it directly with the Pro models rather than assuming it occupies a universally superior position.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max: choose by use and size
Apple lists the two 18 Pro models with the same starting price. That removes the simplest price argument between them; your decision should turn on the screen dimensions, camera-system details, handling and other specifications that differ between the models.

Photographers, video creators and demanding users may value capabilities unavailable on the lower tiers, while a casual user may see little practical return from the premium.
iPhone Duo: pay for the fold, not the label
iPhone Duo’s folding display is its defining distinction. Before buying, test how you open, close, hold and carry it, and identify the apps or workflows that benefit from the expanded display. A conventional model may be better value if you mostly use a single screen for short interactions.
Because the starting price is far above the rest of the lineup, financing terms and repair coverage deserve extra attention. A foldable design can be worth paying for when it replaces a tablet-like task or changes how you work, but it is not a default recommendation for ordinary phone use.

- Set your real budget. Decide the maximum configured price you can pay before considering monthly payments, trade-ins or carrier credits.
- Record your current storage use. Check how much space photos, videos, apps and downloads occupy, then add a sensible growth margin.
- Write a must-have list. Include camera modes, screen size, connectivity, battery expectations and any accessibility or work requirement.
- Shortlist two or three models. Start with iPhone 17e, then move up only for a named requirement. Include a Pro or Duo model only when its distinctive feature is essential.
- Match storage capacities. Compare equivalent capacities and record the configured price for each candidate.
- Check physical fit. Handle the phones, test one-handed reach and verify that the screen and weight suit your routine.
- Read Apple’s footnotes. Pay attention to battery-test conditions, regional availability and any specification limitations.
- Price the purchase method. Compare unlocked payment, financing and carrier promotion totals over the full commitment period.
- Verify the final cart. Confirm model name, storage, carrier status, taxes, return terms and warranty or protection before submitting payment.
What about older iPhone models?
Apple’s comparison page includes older generations, while the current shop lineup is the relevant reference for buying a new model directly from Apple. Older phones may still appear through retailers, refurbished sellers or remaining inventory, but availability, battery condition, warranty and return rights vary.
If you consider an older generation, evaluate it as a separate used or clearance purchase:
- Confirm the exact model and storage, not just the family name.
- Check battery health and whether the seller provides a meaningful return period.
- Compare the final price with the current model after storage and promotions.
- Do not assume a specific software-support end date; the published material here does not establish one.
- Check that the device is unlocked, free of activation locks and compatible with your carrier.
An older phone can be excellent value when its condition and price are transparent. It should not be presented as part of Apple’s current new-model lineup merely because it remains on a comparison page.
Common mistakes that make an iPhone look like a bargain
Choosing by the headline price alone
The displayed starting price may represent a particular capacity, configuration or purchase method. Build the phone you actually want before comparing totals.
Treating a trade-in credit as cash
Trade-in values can depend on inspection, eligibility and plan requirements. Keep the advertised credit separate from the phone’s unlocked price until you have read every condition.
Ignoring storage growth
Running out of space creates recurring cleanup or cloud costs. A slightly more expensive capacity can be better value than replacing a phone early because it no longer holds your files.
Paying for a feature you cannot use
Pro cameras, premium displays and folding screens are valuable only when they change your work or enjoyment. Identify the use case before paying the premium.
Assuming battery estimates equal personal runtime
Apple’s playback figures come from controlled tests. Your signal strength, brightness, apps and habits determine actual endurance.
Forgetting taxes, activation and plan costs
Compare the complete amount over the full financing or promotional period. A low monthly figure can conceal a higher total or an obligation to keep a qualifying plan.
The bottom line for each type of buyer
| Your priority | Start with | Upgrade only when |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest current Apple price | iPhone 17e | A listed feature or higher capacity in another model is essential. |
| Balancing price and mainstream features | Compare iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 | The newer model’s specific advantages justify the extra configured cost. |
| Premium camera, display or performance capabilities | iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max | You will use those capabilities often enough to recover the premium in value. |
| Distinctive premium design | iPhone Air | Its particular form factor or hardware solves a daily need better than cheaper models. |
| Folding-display workflow | iPhone Duo | The foldable screen is central to how you work, read or create. |
There is no universal best-value iPhone. The most defensible choice is the least expensive model that meets your must-have requirements at the storage capacity you need, after you account for the complete purchase and plan cost.
