iPhone Market Share: Which Measure Should You Compare?

iPhone market share is meaningful only when its measure, geography and period are clear. Shipments, active devices, web views and revenue each describe a different slice of the market.

“iPhone market share” has no single percentage unless you specify what is being measured, where, and when. Apple’s share of new smartphone shipments is different from its share of phones currently in use, website views, or smartphone revenue.

What does iPhone market share mean?

Market share is Apple’s portion of a defined smartphone-market measure. To interpret a percentage, identify its numerator, denominator, geography, and time period. For example, a share of worldwide smartphone shipments in one quarter answers a different question from a share of active phones in a country.

There is no universal “iPhone market share” figure independent of those choices. Analysts can also report different results when their data sources or definitions differ.

How is iPhone market share calculated?

The basic calculation is:

Apple’s share = Apple’s amount for the chosen measure ÷ the total market amount for that same measure × 100

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

The numerator and denominator must match in measure, geography, and period. For shipment share, for instance, divide Apple’s smartphone shipments by all smartphone shipments for the same market and quarter. Do not divide shipments by active devices or compare percentages built from different categories.

What kinds of iPhone market share are reported?

Each measure has a different denominator and tells a different story. These figures cannot be treated as interchangeable.

Measure What it counts What it can tell you
Shipment share New smartphones shipped during a period Apple’s portion of new-device shipments in a specified market and period
Sell-through share Devices sold through to customers, as defined by the reporting source Apple’s portion of customer sales rather than units shipped into a distribution channel
Installed-base share Active smartphones in use, measured at a point in time or over a defined period Apple’s portion of the phones people are using—not just new devices bought during a quarter
Web-usage share Website views attributed to devices or categories in a web-traffic dataset A proxy for web activity, not a count of phones sold or owned
Revenue share Smartphone-market revenue Apple’s portion of market value, which can differ from its portion of units

Shipment share: a flow of new devices

Shipment share measures new devices moving into the market over a period; it is a flow, not a count of phones already in use. IDC’s worldwide Q2 2026 table reports Apple at 20.2% of smartphone shipments, with 55.7 million Apple shipments in a 276.3 million-unit market. IDC labels the table “final historical results”; the page was published August 28, 2026, and attributes the table to its Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, August 6, 2026. The figure describes that quarter’s worldwide shipments, not Apple’s share of active smartphones. IDC’s smartphone market-share data defines company shipments as branded-device shipments, excluding OEM sales and refurbished units.

Sell-in and sell-through: channel shipments versus customer sales

Sell-in refers to products shipped into a distribution channel; sell-through refers to products sold through to customers. A source may track both, so keep its label when citing a result. Counterpoint, for example, describes its reporting as covering quarterly sell-in versus sell-through of Apple iPhone models. Calling a shipment figure “consumer purchases” would change what the number means. Counterpoint’s smartphone-share reporting covers these measures.

Installed-base share: devices in use

Installed-base share concerns active devices, rather than only new shipments in a quarter. It can reflect how long people keep phones, whether they remain with a platform, and related ecosystem effects. Counterpoint Research estimated in 2026 that about one in four active smartphones worldwide was an iPhone in 2025. That is an analyst estimate of the global active installed base—not a quarterly shipment share. Counterpoint’s active-installed-base analysis does not provide a detailed activity threshold in the material cited here, so the estimate should not be assigned a more specific definition of “active.”

“Active device” can mean different things in different datasets. Apple’s App Store Connect glossary, for example, defines an active device for that service as one with at least one session during the selected period; the reported totals are based on users who agree to share data. That is an app-analytics definition, not evidence that industry installed-base trackers use the same threshold. Apple’s App Store Connect metrics glossary describes its definition.

Web-usage share: activity, not ownership

StatCounter shares are based on website views by different devices, according to the UK Competition and Markets Authority. They indicate web-view activity in that dataset; they do not directly count phones sold or owned. The CMA also notes that active-device data provides an overall view including new and existing devices, and that shares can differ across sources because their data bases differ. The CMA’s 2025 annex on market outcomes explains the distinction.

Check what a web chart categorizes: device vendor, operating system, or another group. An iOS share and an iPhone-vendor share are not automatically the same category; an operating-system measure need not map one-to-one to a device-vendor measure.

Revenue share: money, not units

Revenue share divides Apple’s smartphone revenue by total smartphone-market revenue. Because this measures value rather than devices, premium pricing can make Apple’s revenue share larger than its unit share. The European Commission distinguishes active devices, units sold, and sales value in its discussion of the European market. Its cited decision covers Europe and historical periods, so it does not establish a current global revenue-share percentage. The European Commission decision provides that market context.

Does market share mean phones sold or phones in use?

It can mean either, or a different measure altogether. A shipment percentage counts new devices shipped in a period; an installed-base percentage concerns devices in use. Website-view share counts activity in a web dataset, while revenue share counts market value. Before interpreting or repeating a percentage, check its label and source rather than assuming “market share” means sales.

How to compare two iPhone market-share figures

Before deciding that two percentages agree or conflict, align the details that determine what each one measures:

  • Measure: shipments, sell-through sales, active devices, website views, or revenue.
  • Market and category: worldwide or a named region; all smartphones or a narrower segment; device vendor or operating system.
  • Time: quarter, calendar year, or point-in-time installed base. Record both the measurement period and the publication date.
  • Source and method: tracker, market-participant data, or web-traffic panel. Note whether the result is an estimate and whether historical results may be revised.

If any of these differ, the figures answer different questions. A quarterly shipment share and an annual installed-base estimate can both be valid without matching.
