It limits selected messaging, browsing, connectivity and Apple service features, so some everyday tasks work differently or not at all. For most people, Apple says, attacks of this kind are not a likely concern. If your worry is a thief who knows your passcode, Stolen Device Protection is aimed at that different problem.
What “standard security settings” means
Apple does not offer a formal iPhone mode called “standard security settings.” Here, it means using an iPhone normally while choosing individual built-in protections for device access, accounts and sharing. Those controls address different risks; they do not combine into a single mode or reproduce Lockdown Mode’s broad restrictions.
Apple describes Lockdown Mode as “an optional, extreme protection” for the very few people who might be personally targeted by sophisticated digital threats such as mercenary spyware. Its purpose is to reduce potential attack surface by limiting how selected apps, websites, connections and services behave. It does not make an iPhone invulnerable or guarantee protection from every attack. See Apple’s About Lockdown Mode and Lockdown Mode security for Apple devices.
What changes when Lockdown Mode is on
The restrictions affect several parts of normal iPhone use. Apple documents these behaviors:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Messages
- Most attachment types are blocked, with exceptions for certain images, video and audio.
- Some features, including links and link previews, are unavailable.
Web browsing
- Certain complex web technologies are blocked. Some websites may load more slowly or fail to work correctly; web fonts may be missing and images may not appear.
FaceTime and Apple services
- Incoming FaceTime calls are blocked unless you have called that person within the previous 30 days.
- Some invitations and service requests are blocked unless you previously initiated contact. SharePlay, FaceTime Live Photos and some other experiences are unavailable.
- Incoming calls will not ring on an Apple Watch paired with an iPhone in Lockdown Mode.
Photos and sharing
- Location information is excluded when you share photos.
- Shared Albums are removed from the Photos app, and the protected device cannot accept new Shared Album invitations.
Connections and wireless networks
- The iPhone must be unlocked before it can connect to an accessory or another computer.
- It will not automatically join non-secure Wi-Fi networks and disconnects from a non-secure Wi-Fi network when Lockdown Mode is enabled.
- 2G and 3G support is turned off on iPhone and iPad.
Profiles and device management
- You cannot install a new configuration profile or newly enroll the device in mobile device management (MDM) or device supervision while Lockdown Mode is on.
- Existing management remains in place.
It is not a blanket communications shutdown: phone calls and plain-text messages continue to work, and emergency functions such as SOS emergency calls are not affected.
How it differs from Stolen Device Protection
Choose a protection based on the threat you are trying to address, not as though Apple’s features were interchangeable rungs on one security scale. Stolen Device Protection is intended for a scenario in which someone has your iPhone and knows its passcode; Lockdown Mode addresses a different concern—highly sophisticated targeted cyberattacks.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
| Concern | Relevant control | What it does | Scope and tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Highly sophisticated targeted cyberattacks | Lockdown Mode | Restricts selected system and app behavior to reduce potential attack surface. | Changes normal use across messaging, browsing, services and connections. |
| A thief has the iPhone and knows its passcode | Stolen Device Protection | Requires Face ID or Touch ID for certain actions without passcode fallback; certain critical changes require authentication, a one-hour delay and another biometric check. | Focuses on device and account changes in a theft scenario. Extra requirements apply away from familiar locations by default; choosing “Always” applies them everywhere. |
| General device, account or sharing protection | Individual built-in security settings | Lets you configure protections relevant to particular needs. | Separate controls, not a unified mode and not a substitute for Lockdown Mode’s restrictions. |
Apple’s details for Stolen Device Protection and its iPhone setup and behavior explain the separate requirements and familiar-location option.
Should you turn on Lockdown Mode?
Apple says most people will never be targeted by attacks of the kind Lockdown Mode is designed for. It is intended for people with reason to believe they may face unusually sophisticated, targeted threats—not as a routine setting everyone needs. Consider the restrictions against the specific risk you face, particularly if you depend on features such as link previews, Shared Albums, broad web compatibility or automatic connections.

- Tap Turn On Lockdown Mode and confirm.
- Tap Turn On & Restart, then enter your passcode when prompted.
Lockdown Mode must be enabled separately on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Turning it on for iPhone also enables it on a paired Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later. Apple recommends enabling it on all supported devices for complete protection. Excluding a website, app or contact reduces protection, so limit exceptions to trusted cases where they are necessary.
Stolen Device Protection requires iOS 17.3 or later, a device passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Find My and relevant Location Services settings. Its extra requirements apply away from familiar locations by default; you can choose “Always” to require them everywhere.
