To connect an Android phone to an iPhone hotspot, turn on Allow Others to Join on the iPhone, then select the iPhone’s Wi-Fi network on Android and enter the password shown in the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot settings. The connection uses the iPhone’s cellular data, not a Wi-Fi network the iPhone has joined.
Before you connect
- The iPhone needs cellular service and a plan that permits Personal Hotspot. Availability, fees and the number of devices allowed depend on the carrier, plan and iPhone model. Apple notes that “Personal Hotspot isn’t available with all carriers. Additional fees may apply.” Apple’s Personal Hotspot guide advises checking with the carrier for plan details.
- Personal Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular internet connection. It cannot relay a Wi-Fi connection that the iPhone is using.
- Keep the phones reasonably close. Apple’s general preparation guidance gives 30 feet (10 meters) as an operating distance; that is guidance, not a promised range or speed.
Connect Android to the iPhone hotspot
Turn on Personal Hotspot on iPhone
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot. Depending on the iOS version and region, it may appear under Cellular or Mobile Service.
- Turn on Allow Others to Join.
- Note the Wi-Fi password displayed on the Personal Hotspot screen. The network name is the iPhone’s device name. To check or change it, go to Settings > General > About > Name.
- If the network is difficult to discover, leave the Personal Hotspot screen open while connecting.
Join from Android
- Open Android Settings > Network & internet > Internet. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer; Google documents this path in its Android Wi-Fi connection guide.
- Make sure Wi-Fi is on, then select the network matching the iPhone’s device name.
- Enter the password shown on the iPhone’s Personal Hotspot screen and tap the option to connect.
Open a webpage or app on Android to confirm internet access. Its traffic uses the iPhone’s cellular data plan; check usage on iPhone under Settings > Cellular.

Choose the default mode or Maximize Compatibility
Start with the normal hotspot setting. If Android cannot find or join the network, Maximize Compatibility is a fallback on supported iPhone models (Apple specifies iPhone 12 or later in its troubleshooting guidance). Turn it on at Settings > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compatibility.
| Setting | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Default hotspot mode | Uses the iPhone’s standard compatibility and Wi-Fi security behavior. | Try the fallback below if a device has trouble connecting. |
| Maximize Compatibility | On supported models, limits the hotspot to 2.4 GHz, disables 5 GHz and, where applicable, 6 GHz, and uses WPA2 Personal. | Apple warns that it may reduce connected-device performance and Wi-Fi security. Use it as a compatibility test rather than a routine requirement. |
Apple describes the setting and its security behavior in Wi-Fi security with Apple devices. If the option is unavailable, the model or software may not support it.

If Android cannot see or join the hotspot
- The network does not appear: Confirm Allow Others to Join is on and leave the Personal Hotspot screen open. On Android, switch Wi-Fi off and back on, refresh the network list, and look for the iPhone’s current device name.
- The password is rejected: Read the current password directly from Settings > Personal Hotspot on the iPhone and enter it again. Avoid relying on an old saved password.
- It still will not connect: Restart both phones and install available operating-system updates. If the iPhone is an iPhone 12 or later, try Maximize Compatibility as described above.
- Use network reset only as a later measure: Apple includes resetting network settings among troubleshooting options. It also removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords and resets cellular settings and previously used VPN/APN settings. Review Apple’s Personal Hotspot troubleshooting steps before doing this.
- Personal Hotspot is missing or cannot be enabled: Ask the carrier whether the feature is supported and enabled for the plan, and whether extra charges apply. A settings change on Android cannot enable a carrier-restricted iPhone feature.
What to expect from hotspot data and performance
Browsing on Android counts against the iPhone’s cellular data allowance and is subject to its cellular connection and conditions. Apple’s cited guidance does not promise a specific hotspot speed, so actual performance can vary; Maximize Compatibility may reduce it further. The number of devices that can join is also carrier- and model-dependent, so confirm the limit and any fees with the carrier.
