They are trade-offs rather than universal defects: Apple says the control layout makes room for vertical content and puts buttons within right-thumb reach, while the fold gives the phone two display sizes and multiple ways to use it.
1. The controls favor right-thumb reach
Tech Advisor’s September 2026 article describes a Touch ID button on the Duo’s right side, replacing Face ID, and says the outer-display controls are positioned for a right thumb. The placement is particularly noticeable on a wide phone: the author judges that left-handed, one-handed use may feel awkward. That is an ergonomic assessment, not a measured finding about every left-handed user.

Apple’s design team gives a specific reason for putting controls at the side: doing so maximizes vertical space for content and makes the controls easier to reach with the right thumb. In other words, the layout reflects a screen-space and reachability choice, even if it does not suit every grip equally. Apple Developer’s design presentation explains the rationale.

With the phone closed, the cover display has squared corners along one side and rounded corners along the other, a visual irregularity Tech Advisor calls out. Whether that looks distinctive or simply uneven is a matter of taste, not a functional flaw established by the available information.

The effect may be less prominent when using the larger inner screen for video or side-by-side apps. But quick checks and other brief interactions can still happen on the outer display, so its shape remains part of the phone’s everyday appearance. Apple lists a 5.4-inch outer OLED display and a 7.6-inch folding OLED inner display in its technical specifications.
3. Folded, it is short, wide and weighty
Tech Advisor reports the closed Duo as 8.4 cm wide, 11.8 cm high and 254 g. Those are the article’s figures; Apple’s specifications separately list a height of 117.8 mm and a depth of 11.3 mm. The published measurements have different stated provenance, so the height figures should not be treated as interchangeable confirmations. Apple’s developer presentation describes the closed device as “wider and shorter than a traditional iPhone.”

The compact height does not mean a narrow or light feel in the hand. Tech Advisor’s September 2026 comparison says the Duo is heavier than a Galaxy Z Fold 8, which it lists at 201 g; that comparison is the article’s, rather than an independently confirmed weight for the other phone. A squat, heavy folded shape may feel unfamiliar in one-handed use and could matter when choosing a stand, but the available information does not establish whether any particular stand fits or clears the camera.
How the fold changes what you see and do
The two displays give the Duo more than a larger screen when opened. Apple says that when the phone is partially folded “like a book,” content and interactive elements move away from the center curve, and the hinge area can divide an app’s layout. Its design presentation also shows a 50/50 split view for two apps. These are software responses to the fold, not guarantees that every app uses the same layout.

Apple lists support for Apple Pencil (USB-C), a specific option for using the larger inner display. Its product page depicts hands-free FaceTime poses and a case and folio with a kickstand; those depictions do not verify the fit of third-party cases or stands. Check a specific accessory’s dimensions, camera clearance, hinge design and weight support rather than assuming that a generic foldable-phone stand will work. Apple’s product page shows the pictured poses and accessories.

- If you often use a phone one-handed with your left hand: the right-side control placement and wide folded body are the two design choices most likely to affect your comfort. The difficulty is a reasonable concern, not a universal outcome.
- If visual symmetry matters to you: inspect the closed cover display’s contrasting corner shapes; the inner screen does not change how the phone looks when shut.
- If you use a stand or case: verify the fit for this phone specifically. Apple’s pictured folio and kickstand show accessory types, not compatibility with every third-party model.
- If you want a larger workspace: the inner screen, fold-aware layouts and Apple Pencil (USB-C) support are relevant counterweights to the folded shape.
Apple announced availability beginning October 23, 2026, according to its product page when accessed for this article. That announced date is not confirmation that the phone launched on schedule.
