On iPhone Duo, an app’s layout can change as the phone folds, switches displays, or is resized. Apple says apps built with older SDKs will run, but may occupy only a centered portion of the inner display; apps built with the iOS 27.1 SDK or later can use the full display in supported layouts, with navigation and tab bars arranged vertically. Whether a particular app is ready depends on its own implementation and release—not just the SDK it was built with.
Why the same app may look different on iPhone Duo
Apple describes iPhone Duo as having a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. The available app space changes when the device folds, opens, or reorients, so an interface designed around one fixed screen shape may not fit every configuration. These are company-reported specifications and design descriptions in Apple’s September 9, 2026 announcement.

Apple’s system interface also changes to make room for content. Lock Screen controls, the Home Screen Dock, and app navigation and controls move to the side in layouts intended to preserve vertical space. When open, the Home Screen can show two pages, with Today View on the left. Apple says the redesigned Dynamic Island sits vertically along the side of both displays and expands for Live Activities and alerts.

In an Apple Developer technical talk, Anna, an engineer on the UI Frameworks team, and Maria, a Human Interface Designer, explain that moving controls normally found at the top and bottom to the side takes advantage of the wider layout and preserves room for content. They say the arrangement stays consistent when the inner display is open in landscape; opening it in portrait brings back a familiar iPhone layout with horizontal bars.

How much of the display an app can use
Apple’s preparation guide describes different outcomes based on the SDK used to build an app. These are Apple’s platform-level descriptions, not confirmation that every current app release has been checked or will behave identically.
| SDK used to build the app | Apple-described display behavior | What that means for the user |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 26 SDK or earlier | Runs but does not adapt to every layout. Open, it appears centered with empty space around it; closed, content appears to the left of the status bar and camera. | The app may use less than the available screen area. |
| iOS 27 SDK | Resizes to use most of the inner display while avoiding the status bar area at the right edge. | The app can use more of the inner screen, but not the full display in this described configuration. |
| iOS 27.1 SDK or later | Can extend across the full display, with toolbars and tab bars vertically below the status bar. | The interface can use the expanded area, provided its content and controls adapt to the vertical-bar layout. |
An SDK update is not, by itself, proof that an app has a polished layout, supports every feature, or has been tested on iPhone Duo. If you want to know whether a particular app is ready, check its release notes or ask its developer.

What developers need to change or check
The central task is to make layout respond to the space the app actually has, rather than assume a fixed device shape. Apple’s preparation guide identifies several common sources of layout trouble:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Do not size an interface from
UIScreen.main.bounds; read the dimensions of the relevant view or window. - Respond when the available size changes during an app session, including when the device folds or the active display changes.
- Do not use device orientation, interface orientation, phone-versus-pad idiom, fixed device dimensions, or a single size class as a substitute for measuring available space.
- Review full-bleed images and video. Wider layouts can crop important content if framing assumes a narrower screen.
- Check navigation and tab controls in the vertical-bar arrangement rather than assuming custom bars will move or resize like system controls.
For navigation patterns, Apple recommends rebuilding against the latest SDK and using system containers where appropriate: SwiftUI’s NavigationStack or NavigationSplitView, or UIKit’s UINavigationController and UITabBarController. Custom navigation can still be appropriate, but developers should verify its behavior instead of relying on automatic adaptation.

How developers can test the layouts
Apple names three testing options in its preparation guide: the iOS resizable simulator in Device Hub, iPhone Mirroring on macOS 27, and the iPhone Duo simulator in Xcode 27.1. Apple calls the iPhone Duo simulator the best way to test the full native experience.
A useful test pass should cover both displays and transitions between layouts, not just a single screenshot at launch. Developers should resize the available area, check portrait and landscape behavior, inspect content near vertical bars and the status bar, and review image or video cropping. This helps catch interfaces that fit one arrangement but clip, stretch, or misplace content in another.

What users can conclude before installing an update
Apple says all apps will run on iPhone Duo, but the amount of screen an app uses depends partly on the SDK used to build it. That does not establish how any individual third-party app currently behaves. Apple’s September 9 announcement scheduled preorders for October 16 and availability beginning October 23 in more than 70 countries and regions, with availability in 28 additional countries and regions from October 30; those dates are company-announced schedules, not evidence of current inventory or app compatibility.
Apple says iPhone Duo will be available with iOS 27.1. The announcement and developer materials describe the platform and expected SDK behavior, but they do not verify individual apps through hands-on testing. For an app-specific answer, look for a developer statement or release note that explicitly addresses iPhone Duo or its changing display layouts.
