Turning it off stops suspended apps from checking for updates and new content through that feature, but Apple does not publish a measured battery-saving figure for the change. Its value depends on which apps you use and how much background activity they perform.
What Background App Refresh does
When you switch away from an app, it may run briefly before entering a suspended state. Apple says suspended apps are not actively in use, open, or taking up system resources. With Background App Refresh enabled, they can check for updates and new content.

Turning off the setting affects this refresh behavior; it does not make apps unusable or stop every kind of activity that can happen in the background. Some apps perform specific background tasks or services independently of this setting.

How to turn it off or limit it to Wi-Fi
- Open Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
- Tap Background App Refresh to choose a device-wide option.
- Select Off, Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi & Cellular Data.
Choose Off to stop this refresh feature across apps. Wi-Fi keeps it available when connected to Wi-Fi while avoiding cellular data for these checks. Wi-Fi & Cellular Data allows checks on either connection. Apple documents these choices but does not quantify battery savings for any of them.

Choose a setting that fits your apps
A global Off setting is not the only option. Keep refresh available for apps where up-to-date content matters to you, and use a more restrictive choice for the rest. If you are unsure whether background use is contributing to battery drain, check what your iPhone reports before changing settings.
Check Battery Usage
Open Settings > Battery and review the Battery Usage information for app and system activity, including on-screen and background activity. Apple identifies directions, music playback, photo syncing, and fetching mail as examples of background activity that may use power. Low cellular coverage can also use more battery.

Battery Usage can help you spot apps with substantial background activity, but it does not prove that Background App Refresh caused a particular drain. The activity shown may involve other kinds of background work.

Low Power Mode reduces power use by changing several features, including turning off Background App Refresh. On iPhone 15 and later, Apple lists the path as Settings > Battery > Power Mode. On iPhone 14 and earlier, use Settings > Battery. Low Power Mode turns off automatically when the iPhone reaches 80% charge or higher.

Because Low Power Mode changes more than Background App Refresh, it involves broader feature trade-offs rather than an invisible battery boost. Apple does not give a fixed amount of battery life gained from enabling it.

Disabling Background App Refresh may be a useful adjustment if apps you rarely need updated are doing background checks. The available Apple guidance and the article behind this tip do not provide a measured saving, however, so there is no supported percentage or number of extra hours to expect. Results will vary with app behavior and how you use your iPhone.
