Background app activity, location access, and Mail’s data-fetch schedule can all contribute to iPhone battery use—but they are not automatically the cause, and they are not necessarily the biggest causes. Start at Settings > Battery to see what your own iPhone reports before changing settings. Battery life varies with how you use the device and which apps are active.
How to find what is using your iPhone battery
- Open Settings > Battery and review Daily Usage and App and System Activity. Compare today with recent days when those views are available.
- Tap an app with unusually high use. Look at background activity alongside on-screen use, notifications, and cellular coverage; a high total alone does not prove that a setting is the cause.
- Change one relevant setting at a time, then check Battery again later. This makes it easier to tell whether the change helped without disrupting unrelated features.
Apple’s battery troubleshooting guide and iPhone guide to battery usage describe these views and clues. The Battery screen can show activity for today and previous days, with details available by tapping an app.

1. Background App Refresh and other background activity
Background App Refresh is a specific setting; background activity in the Battery screen is broader. An app can do work while it is not onscreen for reasons that include directions, music playback, photo syncing, or fetching mail. Apple lists these as examples in its iPhone battery-usage guide. How much power that work uses depends on what the app is doing.

You can review Background App Refresh for individual apps in Settings and turn it off selectively. Avoid disabling it across the board without considering whether an app relies on timely background updates. Apple does not give a fixed battery-saving percentage for this change.

2. Apps with background location access
Location access can support useful features such as directions and location-based reminders, but an app’s permission may allow it to use location in the background. Review permissions at Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, then tap an app and choose the least access that still lets it do what you need.
- Always: Keep this only when the app’s purpose requires location access even when it is not open.
- While Using the App: A narrower choice for apps that need location while you are actively using them.
- Precise Location: Turn it off if approximate location is sufficient for that app.
Apple explains permission choices and approximate location in its Location Services guide and notes that apps using location in the background can trigger reminders in its location-sharing instructions. Turning off Location Services entirely can limit or stop important iPhone features, so review apps individually rather than assuming all location access is unnecessary.

3. Mail Fetch and background email checks
Mail’s Fetch New Data setting affects when new messages arrive, and the available behavior depends on the email service and whether it supports Push. In current Apple instructions, the control is at Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data. On iOS 11 and later, the Automatically option fetches in the background only while the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi.

If you do not need email checked as often, choose a less frequent Fetch schedule or Manual, if available for your account. Manual can delay new messages until you open Mail. Do not assume Push always uses more or less battery than Fetch: Apple’s guidance does not compare their battery impact. Apple documents the controls and account-dependent behavior in its Mail Fetch New Data instructions. Low Power Mode turns off email fetch.

When a broader battery setting makes sense
Low Power Mode is a temporary way to extend battery life, not a targeted diagnosis. Apple says it reduces or disables features including Mail fetch and Background App Refresh, along with other changes. On iPhone 15 and later, find it at Settings > Battery > Power Mode; on older models, use Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. The trade-off is reduced background functionality while the mode is active. See Apple’s Low Power Mode instructions.
Adaptive Power is also available on selected newer devices, but availability depends on the model. Check Apple’s Adaptive Power guidance and your iPhone’s settings rather than assuming the feature is present.

Check Battery Health if drain continues
If battery loss remains unusually high after you have checked activity and relevant settings, inspect Battery Health. The settings path varies by iPhone generation; Apple’s Battery Health instructions show where to find it. Rechargeable batteries have a limited lifespan. If Battery Health displays Service, Apple advises considering service.
