There is no reliable head-to-head evidence showing that iPhone or Android blocks more robocalls overall. The best setting depends on whether you want unknown callers to identify themselves, want unsaved numbers sent straight to voicemail, or only want calls identified as spam filtered. For a balance between screening and receiving legitimate calls, use Ask Reason for Calling on iPhone or automatic Call Screen on a supported Pixel. For fewer interruptions, iPhone’s Silence option or spam filtering is more aggressive—but can hide calls you wanted.
Which setting should you choose?

Screening, filtering, and blocking are not interchangeable. Screening asks a caller for information before deciding whether to ring; filtering suppresses or routes calls classified as spam; silencing unsaved callers applies a broader rule regardless of whether a number is harmful.

How to screen or silence unknown callers on iPhone
In iOS 26, open Settings > Apps > Phone. Under Screen Unknown Callers, choose the behavior that matches your tolerance for missed calls.

Choose this to screen unknown numbers while leaving a path for legitimate callers to reach you. iPhone automatically answers an unknown caller and asks for more information. Apple says that after the caller shares their name and reason, “your iPhone rings and shares their response so you can decide if you want to pick up.” The caller’s answer gives you context before you decide whether to answer.

Silence
Choose Silence if your priority is preventing unsaved numbers from ringing. Calls from numbers not saved in your contacts are silenced, sent to voicemail, and listed in Recents. This applies to legitimate unknown callers too, so it is best suited to people who are willing to check voicemail or call history.
Never
Never leaves calls from unsaved numbers ringing normally. Use it if you regularly expect calls from new numbers and prefer to make the screening decision yourself.

Separate Unknown Callers and Spam lists
iPhone’s Unknown Callers filter moves calls from unknown numbers out of the main Recents view into an Unknown Callers list. It is a way to organize calls, not the same as silencing them.

The separate Spam filter silences calls identified by your carrier as potential spam or fraud, sends them to voicemail, and places them in the Spam list. This depends on carrier identification; it is not a universal Apple classification of every spam call. iPhone’s Call Blocking & Identification settings can also use Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, and supported caller-ID apps. How Google Phone app spam filtering works on Android
In the Phone app, open More > Settings > Caller ID and spam. Google says caller ID and spam protection is on by default; Filter spam calls is an additional setting.
Google says filtered calls do not produce a missed-call or voicemail notification, although they remain in call history and voicemail can still be checked. If a call was incorrectly labeled, you can mark it as not spam; you can also mark a call as spam. Google’s Phone app guidance on caller ID and spam protection explains the controls.

Caller ID and spam protection may send a number to Google when someone outside your contacts calls you—or when you call them—so Google can identify a business caller or assess whether the call is spam. Google says it does not get phone numbers from your Contacts list. If minimizing data sharing matters to you, review the setting and Google’s service details before enabling identification features.

Pixel Call Screen is distinct from the general spam filter in Google’s Phone app. It can answer and question a caller before you decide whether to take the call. Google describes Basic, Medium, and Maximum protection levels; available controls and steps vary by Pixel model.
Google says automatic screening for spam, possibly faked numbers, and first-time callers is available on Pixel 7 and later. Calls Google determines are spam are hung up; calls it does not classify as spam ring through and show the caller’s response. The feature is not available everywhere: Google currently lists automatic screening in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK, and the US. Manual screening is listed in additional countries, with model restrictions; selected non-Pixel Android phones in the US and Canada may also support manual screening. Check the Pixel Call Screen instructions and availability for your phone and region.
Automatic screening may not run while roaming, can be affected by Bluetooth or headphones, and is not compatible with call forwarding, according to Google. Google also warns that transcription may not fully understand a caller and that “Not all spam calls and robocalls can be detected.” Screened-call information is not saved to the Google Account or the Google activity pages listed in its help guidance.
How to choose without hiding calls you need
- Choose screening for a balance: Ask Reason for Calling or supported Pixel Call Screen lets unknown callers explain themselves before you decide.
- Choose silencing for fewer interruptions: iPhone Silence is broad; expect legitimate unsaved callers to go to voicemail too.
- Choose spam filtering for targeted suppression: Google Phone’s filter and iPhone’s carrier-based Spam filter act on calls classified as spam, not all unknown callers.
- Keep labels only if you want to decide: Caller ID and spam warnings can inform you without necessarily preventing the phone from ringing.
- Review missed or misclassified calls: After changing a filter, check the relevant Recents, Unknown Callers, Spam, or spam-marked call history. Correct a false spam label where the app offers that option.
Every filter risks hiding a wanted call. The Federal Trade Commission’s US consumer guidance puts it plainly: “Just know that call-blocking services might block some calls you want to get.” Its advice is US-specific; carrier offerings and reporting options differ elsewhere. What to do when a robocall gets through
No setting catches every unwanted call. If you answer and realize it is an illegal robocall, the FTC advises hanging up and not pressing numbers—even if a recording says to press a key to stop calls. In the US, the FTC’s consumer guidance also explains how to report unwanted calls. Do Not Call registration or reporting does not guarantee that illegal robocalls will stop.
