Choose the Action button for one action you use often and want to trigger with a press and hold. Choose Control Center when you want a visible, customizable set of controls to select from. Neither is proven universally faster; the right option depends on the task, gesture, and iPhone model.
How the two shortcuts differ
| What matters | Action button | Control Center |
|---|---|---|
| How you open it | Press and hold the physical button. | Swipe down from the top-right on Face ID models, or swipe up from the bottom on iPhones with a Home button. |
| What you can reach | One assigned action at a time, including a selected control or Shortcut. | A customizable set of controls; some reveal more options when you touch and hold them. |
| Best suited to | A frequently used action you want ready without choosing from a panel. | Several settings you want to see and select as needed. |
| Model availability | Only supported iPhone models have an Action button. | Apple documents Control Center access on Face ID and Home button iPhones. |
Apple describes the Action button as useful for actions you perform often because it is accessible. That design favors a consistent favorite; Control Center favors choice.

When the Action button is the better fit
Use it when you repeatedly need the same function and prefer a physical press-and-hold to opening a panel. Available assignments include Silent Mode, Focus, Camera, Flashlight, Voice Memo, Recognize Music, Translate, Magnifier, Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility. Some categories require choosing a specific option.

Check whether your iPhone has an Action button
The Action button replaces the Ring/Silent switch on supported models; it is not present on every iPhone. Apple’s current support documentation identifies iPhone 17e, iPhone 16e, and iPhone 15 Pro models, and describes the button on iPhone 16 and later models with Camera Control. Check Apple’s documentation for your exact model and regional lineup before relying on this feature.
Is one method actually faster?
Apple’s documentation explains how each feature works but does not provide a measured speed comparison or study showing that one is objectively faster. The practical distinction is the interaction: a press and hold runs one assignment, while a swipe opens a set of choices. Whether either feels quicker depends on the action you need and which gesture is easier for you.
Which should you use?
- Choose the Action button if you have a supported iPhone and want one frequent, stable action—such as opening Camera or running a Shortcut—on a physical button.
- Choose Control Center if you regularly switch among multiple settings and want to see them together.
- Use both if you want one favorite action on the button and a broader set of controls in Control Center.
Apple documents accessibility routes for both features, but does not establish a universal accessibility or speed winner. Choose the gesture and setup that work best for your needs.
