Reports describe a possible 2027 anniversary iPhone with a shallow, curved OLED screen that Apple is said to be seeking from Samsung Display. The rumored panel could be thinner and transmit more light by removing a polarizer, but that design makes reflections harder to control. Neither the phone nor its specifications have been confirmed by Apple, and the reporting does not establish that Samsung is preventing Apple from getting its preferred design.
What is the iPhone 20 display rumor?
“iPhone 20” and “20th-anniversary iPhone” are press shorthand for a rumored premium iPhone planned for 2027—not confirmed product names. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman’s reporting, as summarized by MacRumors, described a special iPhone planned for later that year with a mostly glass design, a curved screen and no display cutouts. The report did not specify exactly what “mostly glass, curved” meant.

A later MacRumors report, citing Weibo leaker Digital Chat Station, says Apple is seeking a custom Samsung-made OLED panel with shallow curves on all four sides—described as “micro-curved”—and a construction without a polarizer. This is leak-based supply-chain reporting, not confirmation from Apple or Samsung. The reports do not prove that Samsung is constraining Apple’s design or that the proposed panel is a finalized supplier deal.

Why would Apple consider a polarizer-free OLED?
A conventional OLED display stack uses a polarizing film to help suppress reflections. That film also absorbs some of the light emitted by the display. Removing it could make the stack thinner and allow more light through, while placing a color filter on the OLED’s encapsulation layer—a construction known as Color Filter on Encapsulation, or COE—could help manage color.

A September 2025 MacRumors article, crediting ETNews, reported that Apple could use Samsung-made COE technology in the anniversary phone. The potential benefit is a thinner display stack with greater light transmission; the trade-off is that reflections and glare become more difficult to manage. Those are design-level possibilities, not measured performance results for an iPhone.
What are the trade-offs of a curved, polarizer-free screen?
- Thinness and light transmission: Removing the polarizer could reduce the display stack’s thickness and let more emitted light through.
- Reflections and glare: The polarizer normally helps suppress reflections, so removing it makes reflection control a harder engineering problem.
- Curved edges: A curve may affect how content appears near the sides. That is a design consideration raised by the reported shape, not an established defect or measured flaw.
The April 2026 MacRumors report says Apple might use coatings and a light-diffusion layer to address reflections and brightness uniformity. These are reported approaches; there are no independently measured results for a shipping iPhone.

Are the screen size and front-camera details known?
No. A September 2026 T3 report relayed a Weibo leak claiming that iPhone 20 Pro and Pro Max prototypes may have 6.41-inch and 6.96-inch displays. It also reported disagreement about the front camera and Dynamic Island. T3 cautions that prototype details can change, so those dimensions and camera details should not be treated as final specifications.

A September 2026 AppleInsider search-result excerpt suggested improved COE panels might be delayed until 2029, conflicting with earlier reports linking COE to the 2027 anniversary phone. Because the full AppleInsider page was not available to verify, that excerpt does not resolve whether or when the technology might appear.

Is the iPhone 20 confirmed?
No. In the cited reporting, Apple has not confirmed an anniversary iPhone for 2027, the “iPhone 20” name, Samsung as its display supplier, or the panel’s design and technology. The reports offer a plausible account of a display engineering trade-off, but they do not establish Apple’s private preferences, production status or eventual consumer-facing performance.
