iPhone 18 Pro supports 4K120 Dolby Vision on its Fusion Main camera, while 4K120 ProRes requires external recording. Apple requires an exFAT-formatted external drive, a USB 3 cable rated for at least 10 Gbit/s, and a drive capable of writing at least 440 MB/s. That 440 MB/s is a drive-speed threshold—not a video bitrate—so Apple’s published requirements do not establish an exact 4K120 ProRes file size per minute.
Two 4K120 modes, with different recording workflows
Apple lists 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 120 frames per second on the iPhone 18 Pro Fusion Main camera. The phone also supports ProRes recording up to 4K at 120 fps, but Apple specifies that this mode uses external recording. The iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications and iPhone camera user guide make that distinction important: 4K120 Dolby Vision is a listed camera mode, whereas 4K120 ProRes depends on compatible external storage.

Choose based on the job
Dolby Vision and ProRes are different recording options, not interchangeable names for 4K120. ProRes is intended for workflows that benefit from its format, including post-production, and comes with an external-drive requirement at this frame rate. Apple’s documentation does not give a precise per-minute storage figure for either specific 4K120 mode, so compare their workflows and storage demands without assuming a fixed size difference for a given clip.

Apple says ProRes files can be “up to 30 times larger than HEVC files.” That is an upper-bound comparison, not a guaranteed multiplier for every scene, setting, or recording. It gives useful context for why ProRes can place a heavier burden on storage, but it cannot be used to calculate the size of a particular iPhone 18 Pro 4K120 recording. Apple’s stated minimum of 440 MB/s applies to the external drive’s write speed for 4K120 ProRes. It is not the clip’s bitrate, and converting it into gigabytes per minute would produce an unsupported recording-size estimate. Apple’s cited material does not publish an exact iPhone 18 Pro 4K120 ProRes bitrate or dependable GB-per-minute rate.

- Format: The storage device must be formatted as exFAT.
- Cable: Use a USB 3 cable capable of at least 10 Gbit/s.
- Write speed: The external device must write at least 440 MB/s.
- Before each session: Apple directs users to reformat the external device before each 4K120 ProRes recording session.
These requirements are listed in Apple’s ProRes guidance for iPhone. When choosing storage, check its sustained write performance rather than relying on an advertised peak speed alone; the published 440 MB/s threshold is a practical minimum to meet during recording.
Plan capacity without inventing a recording time
Drive capacity tells you how much space is available, but it does not by itself tell you how many minutes of 4K120 ProRes will fit. That calculation needs a reliable bitrate or per-minute file-size figure for the exact recording mode, and Apple’s cited documents do not provide one. Avoid treating the 440 MB/s drive requirement as a substitute. For planning, leave headroom and use actual file sizes from your own recordings in the intended mode rather than promising a duration based on an unsupported estimate.

Why Apple’s support pages appear to disagree
Apple’s current iPhone 18 Pro specification page and camera user guide support the model-specific claim that 4K120 ProRes is available with external recording. Apple’s general ProRes support article includes an older resolution-and-frame-rate table that omits iPhone 18 Pro and lists earlier models. For this model-specific feature, the current specifications and user guide are the more direct references; the older general table should not be read as proof that iPhone 18 Pro lacks the capability.
