iPhone 18 Pro vs. iPhone 16 Pro: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

The iPhone 18 Pro adds a variable-aperture main camera and manual controls, but whether it is worth upgrading from a 16 Pro depends on how you shoot and your local trade-in cost.

The iPhone 18 Pro is worth considering if you’ll use its variable-aperture camera and manual controls, or if Apple’s higher video-playback estimate addresses a real battery need. If your iPhone 16 Pro still works well and those features do not matter to you, the upgrade is harder to justify without knowing your local price and trade-in offer. This seven-round comparison uses Apple’s published specifications and claims, not independent head-to-head testing.

Round 1: Camera hardware and control

The biggest practical difference is the main camera. Apple lists a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture on iPhone 18 Pro, with ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0 settings. The iPhone 16 Pro also has a 48MP Fusion Main camera, but its aperture is fixed at ƒ/1.78. Apple says the 18 Pro’s camera app adds controls for aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, as well as a histogram. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement and model comparison describe the new hardware and controls.

A variable aperture can give a photographer more choice over how much light reaches the sensor and how much of a scene appears in focus. Those are useful creative controls, but the specifications alone do not establish that the 18 Pro takes better photos in everyday use. There is no independent head-to-head camera test in the evidence available here.

Round 2: Battery claims

Apple rates the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, compared with up to 27 hours for iPhone 16 Pro. These are Apple’s maximum manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee of screen-on time or a prediction of how long either phone will last for a particular person. Real-world results depend on settings, signal, apps, and use. See Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications and iPhone 16 Pro technical specifications.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 512GB, eSIM, Deep Blue- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Round 3: Performance and Apple Intelligence

iPhone 18 Pro has Apple’s A20 Pro chip, a 7-core GPU, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. iPhone 16 Pro uses A18 Pro, with a 6-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. Those are meaningful generational changes on paper, but Apple’s published percentage comparisons for A20 Pro are against A19 Pro—not A18 Pro. Without a direct benchmark, it would be misleading to turn them into a specific speed advantage over the 16 Pro.

Both generations support Apple Intelligence. The 18 Pro launches with iOS 27 and Siri AI, according to Apple; availability of software features can depend on language, region, and software version. The newer chip may be relevant if you want the latest hardware platform, but the specifications here do not quantify how much faster your everyday tasks will feel.

Round 4: Display, size, and weight

Both phones have a 6.3-inch-class display with ProMotion up to 120Hz. Apple gives the standard-rectangle measurement as 6.27 inches for each model, so screen size is not a compelling reason by itself to move from one to the other. The 18 Pro is 211 g and 8.75 mm deep; the 16 Pro is 199 g and 8.25 mm deep. In Apple’s listed measurements, the newer phone is 12 g heavier and 0.5 mm thicker. Apple’s comparison page lists the display measurement, while the 18 Pro specifications and 16 Pro specifications list dimensions and weight.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Cosmic Orange- Unlocked (Renewed)

Round 5: Photo workflow and image authenticity

Beyond variable aperture, Apple describes iPhone 18 Pro camera controls for shutter speed and white balance, plus a histogram. These features are aimed at people who want more direct input while composing or capturing an image, rather than relying entirely on automatic processing.

Apple also describes Reference Image as a signed sensor-data reference for checking whether an image was edited. That is Apple’s description of the feature; it is not independent validation of how reliably it can establish image authenticity in every situation. If you mainly take casual snapshots, the added controls may not change your routine. If you deliberately adjust exposure and color, they may be a more tangible upgrade than a new chip name.

Round 6: Connectivity and durability

Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, and a C2 cellular modem for iPhone 18 Pro. iPhone 16 Pro specifications list Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, Thread, and USB-C. The clearest listed wireless-generation difference is Bluetooth; both list Wi-Fi 7 and Thread. The sources here do not establish a real-world connectivity improvement for a particular carrier, accessory, or network.

Rank #3
Apple iPhone 17 Pro, US Version, 256GB, eSIM, Deep Blue- Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Apple rates both phones IP68 under IEC 60529, stating a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes in controlled laboratory conditions. That rating is not a recommendation to expose either phone to water, and resistance can diminish with normal wear. Specifications are available from Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro page and iPhone 16 Pro page.

Round 7: What the upgrade costs—and whether it makes sense

Apple announced a U.S. launch starting price of $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro in 2026. That is a launch price, not a current price in every market. No comparable current price for iPhone 16 Pro or trade-in quote is established here, so a universal value judgment would be premature.

For a useful comparison, check the price of the 18 Pro and a trade-in estimate for your 16 Pro in your market, matching storage capacity where possible. Then weigh the net cost against the features you would actually use:

  • Consider upgrading if variable aperture and manual camera controls would change how you shoot, or Apple’s stated battery improvement targets a problem you have.
  • Consider keeping the 16 Pro if it meets your needs, you are satisfied with its camera workflow, and the new features do not justify the net cost.
  • Wait for more evidence if your decision depends on real-world camera, battery, or speed gains: the figures here are Apple specifications and estimates, not independent comparisons.
