The 18 Pro brings a 48MP main camera with variable aperture, an A20 Pro chip and an updated thermal system. Apple also advertises up to 36 hours of video playback for the eSIM-only model. Those are meaningful changes on paper, but there is no independent, same-condition 18 Pro-versus-16 Pro test here to quantify the everyday difference. At its U.S. launch, the 18 Pro started at $1,199 before trade-in or carrier offers.
What is different between iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro?
The biggest practical differences are the 18 Pro’s variable-aperture main camera, Apple’s higher advertised battery figure, and its newer chip and thermal system. The 16 Pro is not an entry-level baseline: it launched with a 48MP Fusion main camera, a 48MP Ultra Wide camera, a 5x Telephoto camera, and 4K120 Dolby Vision video recording.

| Area | iPhone 16 Pro | iPhone 18 Pro | What that means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camera | 48MP Fusion main, 48MP Ultra Wide, 5x Telephoto; 4K120 Dolby Vision recording. | 48MP main camera with variable aperture; Apple says it offers improved low-light and depth-of-field control. | The clearest hardware change is aperture control on the main camera. Apple’s description is an announced capability, not an independently measured image-quality comparison. |
| Battery | Apple described better battery life for the 16 Pro generation at launch, but that does not establish how long an individual 16 Pro lasts today. | Apple estimates up to 36 hours of video playback for the eSIM-only 18 Pro. | Apple’s figure is a vendor estimate based on preproduction-device testing, not a guaranteed everyday result or a like-for-like comparison with the 16 Pro. |
| Performance | A18 Pro. | A20 Pro and an updated thermal system. | The newer hardware may matter for demanding workloads, but Apple’s comparisons are not independent benchmarks of the two phones. |
| Launch price in the U.S. | $999 starting price at its 2024 launch. | $1,199 starting price at its 2026 launch. | These are historical launch prices, not current resale or street prices. Your actual upgrade cost depends on today’s price and eligible offers. |
Apple also says the 18 Pro’s Ceramic Shield 2 front has three times better scratch resistance than the 16 Pro. That is Apple’s product-page claim, not an independently verified durability result. The 18 Pro became available September 18, 2026; current availability and offers may differ by market.

Should you upgrade from iPhone 16 Pro to iPhone 18 Pro?
Upgrade if you will use the camera change
The variable-aperture main camera is the most distinct new feature in this comparison. Apple says it can adjust aperture for lighting and depth of field, with manual controls. It is a stronger reason to upgrade if you often take photos where light or background separation matters and want more control over capture. If you mainly use the 16 Pro’s existing cameras for everyday photos and video, the published specifications alone do not establish that your pictures will look better enough to justify the cost.

Consider it if your battery is a daily problem
Apple advertises up to 36 hours of video playback for the eSIM-only 18 Pro. Apple says its estimate used preproduction devices and software with representative usage; actual results vary. It is not a direct test against a 16 Pro, and an older phone’s battery condition can differ substantially from another owner’s. If your 16 Pro routinely fails to last through your day, compare its battery condition and your real usage with the cost of replacing or trading it in before treating the 18 Pro’s estimate as a reason to buy.
Upgrade for performance only if you feel a limit
The A20 Pro and updated thermal system are relevant if your current phone struggles with demanding apps, games, or sustained workloads. Apple’s performance claims are manufacturer comparisons, not independent benchmarks measuring the 18 Pro against the 16 Pro. If your 16 Pro already feels responsive for the work you do, the chip change may be difficult to notice in ordinary use.

Keep the 16 Pro if it still meets your needs
The 16 Pro already has a high-resolution main and Ultra Wide camera, a 5x Telephoto camera, and 4K120 Dolby Vision recording. If its battery remains dependable and you are not looking for the 18 Pro’s aperture controls or more performance headroom, keeping it avoids paying for improvements you may not use.
How to decide using your actual upgrade cost
- Identify the problem you want the new phone to solve. Is it camera control, battery endurance, or demanding apps and games? If none is a current frustration, the upgrade case is weaker.
- Check the price you would actually pay. The 18 Pro’s U.S. launch price was $1,199. Apple announced trade-in and select-carrier credits, but eligibility and value vary. Compare the current price and confirmed offer for your device rather than assuming a maximum credit applies.
- Account for your 16 Pro’s condition. Battery health, storage, physical condition, and how long you expect to keep the phone affect whether replacement is sensible. The 2024 $999 launch price is not a guide to what your 16 Pro is worth now.
- Compare the net cost with the feature you value. If the camera or battery benefit is important enough at your actual net price, upgrading can make sense. If not, keeping a dependable 16 Pro is the more straightforward choice.
What the available comparisons can—and cannot—show
Apple’s launch materials and product page are the source for the announced features, prices, and battery estimate. Apple’s performance, battery, and scratch-resistance figures are vendor claims. No independent, same-condition head-to-head test establishes how much faster, longer-lasting, or better at photography the 18 Pro is than the 16 Pro in everyday use, so treat those benefits as reasons to investigate—not guaranteed outcomes.
