The most useful iPhone 18 Pro settings to explore are its customizable Camera controls, optional manual exposure and focus tools, framing overlays, and app permissions. You do not need to switch everything to manual: choose only the controls that suit how you shoot, and review privacy access app by app.
Customize the Camera controls you actually use
Apple’s 2026 launch materials identify iPhone 18 Pro as an iOS 27 phone and describe customizable Pro controls in Camera. You can add controls above the camera frame or open them through Camera Controls. Start with one or two tools you recognize—such as the histogram or white balance—rather than changing every exposure value at once. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement

Choose when to use manual exposure and white balance
In Camera, tap Camera Controls, then choose Lens Aperture, Shutter Speed, or White Balance. You can also add these controls above the frame and tap them there. Select an aperture or white-balance value, or drag the shutter-speed slider. Apple documents these manual controls in Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, and Time-Lapse modes. The documentation describes what can be adjusted, not a universally best setting: scene brightness, motion, and the look you want all affect the choice. Apple’s Camera controls guide
Use the histogram as an exposure aid
To see a histogram, open Camera Controls and choose Histogram, or add it to the camera tools above the frame. It gives you another way to assess exposure while composing; it does not choose an exposure for you.

Set focus distance or pick a lens when needed
In a mode that supports it, open Camera Controls and choose Focus. Select Ultra Wide, Main, or Telephoto, then drag the slider to set focus distance. Try grid and level overlays for composition
Grid and level overlays can help you compose a frame or straighten a shot. Turn them on if they assist your workflow, and turn them off if you find them distracting; they are aids, not a guarantee of a better photograph. Find them in Settings > Camera. Apple’s camera settings guide
Review app permissions without breaking features you use
Open Settings > Privacy & Security to review app access to categories such as Location Services, Photos, Microphone, and Camera. You can grant or revoke access. Keep permissions that support features you rely on; removing access may limit what an app can do. Apple’s guide to controlling app access
