There is not enough matched evidence to name a universal winner. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max sustains performance better than the previous iPhone generation, and an independent test found it took longer than the iPhone 17 Pro Max to reach a reported thermal state during extended gaming. Neither result compares it directly with a dedicated gaming phone. For that decision, sustained frame rate in the same game and under the same conditions matters more than a cooling feature or peak-performance claim.
What changed in the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s cooling design?
Apple’s September 2026 announcement describes a redesigned vapor chamber connected directly to the A20 Pro chip through its packaging, which places the silicon alongside memory. Apple says the chamber has three times the surface area of the one in the previous iPhone 17 Pro generation and enables “up to a 40 percent gain” in sustained performance over that generation. Those are Apple’s own claims about an iPhone-to-iPhone improvement, not an independent comparison with gaming phones. Apple’s announcement

What do independent tests say about sustained performance?
Notebookcheck reported that the iPhone 18 Pro Max reached its cited “Fair” thermal state after 11 minutes 27 seconds in an extended gaming comparison; the iPhone 17 Pro Max reached that state after 6 minutes 31 seconds. Notebookcheck also reported that the newer phone still throttles, but reaches that state later and loses less performance once there. This is evidence of improvement over the prior iPhone, not evidence that it outlasts a dedicated gaming phone. Notebookcheck’s report

What do dedicated gaming-phone features establish?
REDMAGIC’s 10S Pro product page lists a 144 Hz display and ICE-X cooling. These specifications describe the phone’s hardware and manufacturer-promoted cooling system; by themselves, they do not show how its frame rates hold up against the iPhone 18 Pro Max during the same game, at the same settings, for the same duration. REDMAGIC 10S Pro
A high-refresh display can show more frames when a game and the phone’s performance allow it, but the display’s stated refresh rate is not a sustained frame-rate result. Cooling design, display capability, and measured performance are related but distinct evidence.

How to compare the phones fairly
Look for results from the same demanding game rather than comparing a manufacturer claim, a synthetic benchmark, and a different phone’s gaming test. A useful head-to-head test should report:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Frame rate over time: sustained average FPS and frame-time stability, not just a peak or opening-minute result.
- Matching workload: the same game, graphics settings, resolution, and test duration on both phones.
- Matching conditions: ambient temperature, performance mode, and whether an external cooler is used.
- Player-facing effects: surface temperature, screen-brightness changes, and battery drain during the run.
- Practical compatibility: whether the games and services you use are available and behave as expected on each platform.
If one review tests with a performance mode or external cooler and another does not, their scores are not directly comparable. A result in a single benchmark also cannot establish which phone will hold up best in every game.

- Smooth Performance: Handles your favorite apps, games, and multitasking without slowing down, with plenty of space for all your photos and videos.

Which should you choose?
Based on the available comparisons, choose the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want its platform and ecosystem and value the reported improvement over the iPhone 17 Pro Max—but do not treat that improvement as proof it beats a dedicated gaming phone. Choose a gaming phone only if matched results for the particular games and conditions you care about demonstrate the sustained performance you want; its gaming-focused features alone do not establish a win.
