What does the iPhone 18 Pro Max durability evidence show?
The evidence falls into four distinct categories, which should not be treated as interchangeable:

- EU product information sheet: Apple’s sheet for model A3717 lists repeated free-fall reliability and screen scratch-resistance figures.
- Reviewer observation: TechRadar reported no visible front scratches or back abrasions after a few days with the device, without describing a controlled test.
None of these sources establishes a repeatable, independent result for drop, scratch, and bend performance across the same test protocol.

Apple describes the iPhone 18 Pro Max as having an aluminum unibody, a Ceramic Shield back, and a Ceramic Shield 2 front. Apple says the front has “3x better scratch resistance” than iPhone 16 Pro. That is Apple’s product claim, not an independent result established by the sources cited here. The product page does not provide a directly comparable independent scratch-test result: Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro page.

What do the official resistance figures mean?
IP68 water and dust resistance
Apple’s technical specifications list IP68 under IEC 60529 and state a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under controlled laboratory conditions. These limits describe the conditions of the rating; they do not show that the phone is impervious to every liquid, pressure, age-related change, or damage condition. EU product-sheet fall and scratch entries
Apple Distribution International Limited’s EU product information sheet for iPhone 18 Pro Max model A3717 lists at least 180 falls without defect for repeated free-fall reliability, with reliability class B. The same sheet lists Mohs 5 screen scratch resistance. These are product-sheet entries, not a guarantee that a consumer phone will survive 180 everyday drops or a report of a drop height, floor surface, or independent test protocol reproduced for this article. What has a reviewer observed?
TechRadar reported that after a few days with the phone it had seen no scratches on the front and no abrasions on the back. That short-term handling observation does not specify the force, surface, drop height, sample size, or a controlled scratch method, so it cannot establish how the phone performs under repeatable stress: TechRadar’s early review.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max durable enough without a case?
The available evidence does not support a blanket answer that it is safe to use without a case. Apple’s EU sheet says the phone ships without a protective cover. A case designed specifically for iPhone 18 Pro Max is an optional way to add a protective layer, but no particular case’s performance is established here. Confirm exact model compatibility before buying.

Apple lists the phone at 249 g and 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75 mm, with a 6.9-inch display. Those are specifications, not durability-test findings; they also do not predict whether a particular fall will damage the phone. Apple’s announcement dated September 9, 2026 identifies the device as part of the new Pro lineup. Its cited battery and performance tests using preproduction units and representative usage profiles are not durability tests: Apple’s announcement.

A useful durability comparison would identify who performed each test, its method and conditions, the number of phones tested, and whether units were retail or preproduction. Without those details, a marketing statement, product-sheet figure, and brief reviewer observation cannot be combined into a definitive drop-or-bend verdict.
