Samsung lists a larger open display and lower weight, while Apple lists IP68 protection. The specifications do not establish a winner for battery life, camera quality, durability or performance.
How the form factors change the experience
The iPhone 17 Pro is a conventional slab phone. The Galaxy Z Flip8 folds in half, with a main screen for use when open and a cover screen for some interactions while closed. Samsung promotes using the FlexWindow without unfolding the phone, so the Flip8’s main distinction is not simply screen size: it is the option to keep the device folded for some tasks.

That trade-off is personal. Choose the iPhone if you prefer a standard, always-open display. Consider the Flip8 if folding the phone into a compact shape and using its cover display match how you want to carry and use it.

Which screen and weight matter more?
Apple lists the iPhone 17 Pro’s 6.3-inch display, while Samsung lists the Flip8’s main display at 6.9 inches when open. The Flip8 also has a 4.1-inch cover display for use while folded. Those measurements describe different modes of use, so the larger open screen does not answer whether a foldable suits you better.

Price difference: compare the same storage and sale conditions
For the US, Samsung’s product page lists the Galaxy Z Flip8 from $1,199.99 before trade-in. PhoneArena’s comparison lists US MSRP figures of $1,099 for the iPhone 17 Pro with 256GB and $1,200 for the Flip8 with 256GB. Comparing those PhoneArena figures, the listed difference is $101, with the Flip8 higher. They are listing/MSRP references, not a verified same-day checkout comparison; Samsung’s manufacturer-page starting price and PhoneArena’s comparison may reflect different timing or price conventions.

The cited sources do not establish a current, matched retailer price for both phones under the same purchase conditions. Trade-in and carrier offers can change the amount paid. Before choosing on price, compare the same storage capacity and record the country, date, unlocked or carrier status, pre-tax price and any offer conditions. Check regional availability too; the cited storage listings do not establish every market’s configurations.

The listed protection ratings differ: Apple specifies IP68 and gives a rating of up to 6 m for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529, while PhoneArena lists IP48 for the Flip8. These ratings are not equivalent measures of overall durability, and they do not establish how either phone will fare in every accident or over time.

Samsung lists a 4,300 mAh battery capacity for the Flip8, but the cited Apple specifications do not state a battery capacity. Capacity by itself cannot show which phone lasts longer in real use. Likewise, the listed camera information is not a controlled comparison of photo or video results, and the chip names do not establish a performance winner. The available sources provide specifications, not comparable head-to-head tests for battery life, camera quality, durability or performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you choose?
- Choose the iPhone 17 Pro if you want a conventional smartphone, a 6.3-inch display, and prefer Apple’s ecosystem.
- Choose the Galaxy Z Flip8 if a clamshell that folds into a smaller shape and a usable cover display are priorities.
- Compare prices before deciding if cost is the deciding factor: match storage and purchase conditions, then check current local offers rather than treating the cited list/MSRP figures as guaranteed checkout prices.
Think about your existing Apple or Android devices and services when weighing ecosystem fit. The specifications cited here do not compare ecosystem features or migration support.
