AuthLM and LLM Routers: Key Facts About Separating Credentials from Routing

AuthLM documents provider authentication and credential management—not request routing or model selection. Here are its capabilities, limits, and the design questions behind separating credentials from an LLM router.

AuthLM is designed to manage AI-provider credentials, not route requests or choose models. That separation can make responsibilities easier to reason about, but it is an architectural choice—not a universal security rule. Whether a router and credential manager should be separate depends on how a system stores, scopes, refreshes, and monitors credentials, and who operates it.

What AuthLM does—and what it leaves to a router

AuthLM describes itself as a Python library for authentication and credential management for AI-provider APIs. Its documentation says it does not route requests, pick models, or replace an inference library. A router handles decisions such as which provider or model receives a request; a credential manager handles the authentication material needed to access those providers.

That is the boundary AuthLM documents, rather than proof that every system should enforce the same separation. Its package page is first-party documentation, not an independent security audit. AuthLM on PyPI

What AuthLM documents for credentials

The package page lists four provider IDs: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and OpenRouter. It documents API-key authentication for all four, browser-based OAuth PKCE and device-code options for OpenAI and Anthropic, and browser PKCE for Google. It also describes refresh behavior that can rotate and persist updated access and refresh tokens, aliases for addressing credentials across providers or accounts, and a validation operation that probes a credential against a provider endpoint.

These capabilities address credential lifecycle work that can otherwise end up scattered across applications: obtaining credentials, choosing which account applies, renewing tokens, and checking whether a credential works. The documentation does not establish that every integration will use those capabilities correctly.

Storage choices are part of the deployment

AuthLM documents an OS keychain as its default store through keyring: macOS Keychain, Windows Credential Manager, or Linux Secret Service. It also lists an encrypted file store, an environment-variable-backed read-only store, and an in-memory store intended for tests.

The backend matters. A default keychain does not by itself establish how secrets are handled in every operating system, deployment, or application integration. The package description’s security wording should be read in the context of the selected store and its configuration, not as an independent guarantee about all possible setups.

Why separate routing from credential management?

A separation can clarify which component is responsible for provider selection and which is responsible for access credentials. It can also help teams review credential lifecycle controls without treating them as an incidental part of model-selection logic. Those are architectural and operational benefits to evaluate, not evidence that routers inherently mishandle secrets.

When assessing a design, ask who can retrieve secrets, whether each credential is scoped to the minimum required access, how refresh and rotation work, how credentials are validated and revoked, what appears in logs or traces, and who owns configuration and incident response. A separate credential manager is useful only if the integration preserves those controls and responsibilities.

When combining the functions may be reasonable

Routing and key administration can coexist in a managed gateway. For example, nexos.ai describes its AI gateway as offering routing, API-key management, logs, and traces. Those are vendor-described product features, not independently verified security outcomes. nexos.ai AI Gateway

A combined service may reduce the number of components a team has to configure, while also concentrating responsibilities in one control plane. The decision should follow the deployment’s threat model, access boundaries, operational ownership, and logging requirements—not an assumption that the two functions can never share a product.

AuthLM details to check before adopting it

The PyPI page identifies AuthLM 0.1.0, uploaded July 23, 2026, under the Apache-2.0 license, and requires Python 3.11 or later. Package versions and provider support can change, so verify the current project page and the exact behavior of the version you plan to install.

One important compatibility distinction: AuthLM’s documented OpenAI OAuth methods produce Codex-scoped credentials for chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex, not standard access to api.openai.com. The package says those credentials require a Codex-compatible client; they should not be treated as interchangeable with an OpenAI API key.

The surfaced DEV listing identifies Vihaan Gupta as the author of an article with the same title, but it does not provide the article text; the product scope described here is grounded in AuthLM’s own package documentation. DEV profile and listing
