What the display and chip differences mean
Display
The 17 Pro Max’s 6.9-inch screen is 0.2 inches larger diagonally than the 16 Plus’s 6.7-inch display. It also supports ProMotion up to 120Hz and Always-On, features Apple lists for the 17 Pro family. Those specifications make the Pro Max the clearer fit if a high-refresh display or Always-On matters to you; screen size alone is a smaller difference.
Chip
The 17 Pro Max has Apple’s A19 Pro chip, while the 16 Plus has A18. That establishes a newer chip generation, but the available specifications do not quantify a real-world speed gap. It is not enough evidence to promise a particular improvement in everyday use.

Camera and storage differences
Apple identifies the 17 Pro Max’s rear setup as three 48MP cameras—Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto—and its front camera as an 18MP Center Stage camera. The captured comparison details do not provide a full sensor-by-sensor camera specification for the 16 Plus, so a precise camera-to-camera specification comparison cannot be made from those details alone.
Capacity may affect both price and how long the phone remains practical for your needs. Apple lists the 17 Pro Max at 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB, while the 16 Plus appears at 128GB and 256GB. A same-capacity comparison is possible only at 256GB; do not treat a price for a different storage tier as a direct model comparison.

What is the price difference?
A current price gap cannot be stated responsibly from the available listing information: the comparison page uses dynamic price placeholders and does not provide two comparable current prices. The country, storage configuration, condition and seller also change what a buyer would actually pay.
The only firm price reference here is the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s original US launch starting price: $1,199 for 256GB, announced in September 2025. It is historical launch pricing, not a present-day quote, and it cannot be subtracted from an unspecified 16 Plus price to produce a current difference.

For a useful local comparison, check the total price for the same storage where possible, the condition of each device, seller identity and warranty, and carrier compatibility. Apple’s comparison page shows reseller availability for models outside its current direct-buy lineup, but that does not establish stock in a particular country; verify the actual listing with the retailer.
Which iPhone should you choose?
Choose iPhone 17 Pro Max if
- You specifically want the listed Pro camera hardware, including a Telephoto camera.
- You value ProMotion up to 120Hz or an Always-On display.
- You need storage above 256GB or want the larger 6.9-inch screen.
- You prefer the newer Pro-tier model and are comparing actual local offers on equal terms.
Consider iPhone 16 Plus if
- You want a large-screen iPhone and do not need the 17 Pro Max’s documented Pro features.
- A verified local offer makes it materially less expensive for the same condition and an appropriate storage capacity.
- Its listed up-to-27-hour video playback figure is relevant to your decision; Apple’s captured specifications do not provide a directly comparable playback-hour figure for the 17 Pro Max.
These recommendations follow from Apple’s published specifications, not independent performance testing or hands-on evaluation. The 16 Plus remains a possible value choice only if a real, verified offer supports that conclusion.
