A photo shared before the iPhone 16 Pro launch allegedly showed a retail-box seal marked “Assembled in India.” The image was not independently authenticated, so it is evidence of what one reported label appeared to say—not proof that every iPhone 16 Pro was assembled in India. Separate reporting at the time said Apple planned to assemble Pro models in India, making the label plausible.
What did the leaked iPhone 16 Pro label show?
On August 21, 2024, 9to5Mac reported that a photo shared by Weibo leaker “OvO” appeared to show an iPhone 16 Pro box seal bearing the product name and the words “Assembled in India.” The report explicitly said it could not vouch for the image’s authenticity, while noting that other sources supported the possibility of an Indian-assembled iPhone 16 Pro.

That distinction matters: the image was a leak, not an Apple announcement or independently verified record of a retail unit’s origin.
Did Apple make the iPhone 16 Pro in India?
Contemporaneous reporting makes the label’s claim plausible, but does not verify the specific photograph or establish where every iPhone 16 Pro was assembled. On July 26, 2024, Moneycontrol reported that Apple planned to assemble the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in India through Foxconn for the first time, with India-assembled units intended to be available after launch.

- Titanium frame combines strength and lightness, giving the iPhone 16 Pro a premium feel while reducing weight for prolonged daily use. The polished edges and textured back enhance grip and handling, making it easier to use during long calls, gaming sessions, or when capturing photos and videos on the move.
The evidence therefore has different levels of certainty and scope:
| Evidence | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Photo shared by Weibo leaker “OvO,” reported by 9to5Mac on August 21, 2024 | The image allegedly showed an iPhone 16 Pro seal marked “Assembled in India.” | Whether the image was authentic, or the assembly origin of other phones. |
| Moneycontrol supply-chain reporting, July 26, 2024 | Apple reportedly planned first-time India assembly of Pro models through Foxconn. | That the plan applied to every unit or that the leaked photo was genuine. |
| Apple’s September 9, 2024 launch announcement | Apple announced the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, with pre-orders starting September 13 and availability beginning September 20. | The launch announcement does not confirm the leak or specify the origin of every unit. |
Apple’s India newsroom announcement listed 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB capacities for both Pro models. It described the phones’ features but did not authenticate the leaked box label.

Does “Assembled in India” mean the whole phone was made there?
No. “Assembled in India” describes assembly in India; it does not, by itself, mean every component was manufactured there. The leaked wording also cannot be generalized from one alleged box to all iPhone 16 Pro retail units. The available reporting supports a planned India assembly effort for the Pro line, not a claim that the entire product line—or every part of each phone—originated in India.

Apple’s September 2024 iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max environmental report gives official packaging information, but that information is separate from the country-of-assembly claim on the leaked seal. For the U.S. configuration covered by the report, Apple says the packaging is 100 percent fiber-based, has at least 66 percent recycled content in its fiber packaging, and is about 6 percent smaller in volume than the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max packaging. The report includes packaging in its carbon-footprint calculations.
