For most new buyers, the iPhone 17 is the best default if its price fits your budget. It is the only model in this comparison that Apple lists with a 6.3-inch display, ProMotion and an Always-On display. The iPhone 16 is the more rational purchase when it is meaningfully cheaper for the same storage and condition. Choose the iPhone 15 only when the discount is large enough to compensate for its older display and feature eligibility.
There is no universal “best value” here: current prices, stock, seller policies, trade-in credits and carrier offers vary by country and date. Use the comparison below to judge the price you actually find rather than relying on a fixed ranking.

The short answer
| Model | Best for | Key evidence | Main reason to hesitate |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 | Most new buyers who want the newest standard iPhone | 6.3-inch display, ProMotion and Always-On display are listed by Apple; its maximum video-playback figure is higher than the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 figures | It is the right choice only if the price premium is acceptable; no current live price was established |
| iPhone 16 | Buyers seeking a middle ground | 6.1-inch display; Apple lists up to 22 hours of video playback and up to 18 hours of streamed video; some iOS features require iPhone 16 or later | It can be awkwardly priced if the iPhone 17 is only slightly more expensive |
| iPhone 15 | Budget-focused buyers finding a substantial discount | 6.1-inch display; Apple lists up to 20 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of streamed video; MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W and Qi charging up to 7.5W | It is the oldest option and does not qualify for every feature that requires iPhone 16 or later |
The table is a buying framework, not a promise of a particular deal. Compare identical storage capacities, similar physical condition and the same type of seller before deciding that one model is cheaper.
What is actually different between the three phones?
iPhone 15: the low-price entry point
The iPhone 15 remains relevant when a retailer, carrier or refurbisher prices it well below the newer models. Apple lists a 6.1-inch display and manufacturer estimates of up to 20 hours of video playback or up to 16 hours of streamed video. Its documented wireless charging figures are up to 15W with MagSafe and up to 7.5W with Qi.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Its age matters less for basic calling, messaging, photography, streaming and ordinary apps than it does for new platform features. Apple’s iOS 26 feature guide separates features available on iPhone 15 and later from features that require iPhone 16 and later. Therefore, buying the 15 means accepting that some current and future capabilities may not be available to you, even though the phone can still run supported versions of iOS.
iPhone 16: the compromise model
The iPhone 16 keeps the 6.1-inch display size but raises Apple’s quoted maximums to up to 22 hours of video playback and up to 18 hours of streamed video. It also crosses the eligibility line for features that Apple specifies as requiring iPhone 16 or later.
That combination makes the 16 the sensible middle option when its price is clearly below the 17. It is not automatically the best value: a small price gap can make the newer display and feature set of the 17 more compelling, while a large 15 discount can make the older model adequate for a basic-use buyer.
iPhone 17: the display-led upgrade
Apple’s comparison material lists the iPhone 17 with a 6.3-inch display, ProMotion and an Always-On display. The 15 and 16 are listed at 6.1 inches. Apple also reports a higher maximum video-playback figure for the 17 than for either of the earlier phones, although the reviewed comparison does not state the exact number.
The 17 is therefore the clearest choice for someone who notices screen size and refresh behavior, wants the newest standard-model feature set, or intends to keep the phone for several years while preserving access to newer features. The premium still needs to be checked against the actual price in your region.

Display: is the iPhone 17’s screen worth paying for?
Size
The difference is measurable but not dramatic on paper: Apple lists 6.1 inches for both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, and 6.3 inches for the iPhone 17. The larger panel can make text, timelines, maps and video more comfortable, but it also changes the phone’s physical feel. If you prefer a smaller handset, the 15 and 16 share the more compact listed display size.
Refresh behavior
Apple’s comparison lists ProMotion for the iPhone 17. ProMotion is the feature to focus on if you care about smoother scrolling, more fluid animation and refresh behavior that adapts to what is on screen. The reviewed comparison does not list ProMotion for the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16, so do not assume that they deliver the same display experience.

Always-On display
Always-On display is also listed for the iPhone 17. It can let information remain visible without fully waking the phone. Apple’s comparison does not list it for the 15 or 16. If you regularly glance at notifications, time or widgets, this may matter more than the extra 0.2 inches of diagonal size.
How to decide
- Choose the 17 for the largest screen and the listed ProMotion and Always-On features.
- Choose the 16 if you want a 6.1-inch phone and its price is substantially lower.
- Choose the 15 if the discount is your priority and you are comfortable without assuming the newer display features.
Software, iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence eligibility
Software support is not a simple “newer is faster” question. Apple’s iOS 26 feature guide says some features are available on iPhone 15 and later, while other features require iPhone 16 and later. That gives the iPhone 16 and 17 a documented eligibility advantage for the latter group.
Apple Intelligence eligibility varies by model, individual feature, language and region. Do not interpret “iPhone 15 and later” as meaning that every Apple Intelligence function works on all three phones, and do not assume that an eligible model has identical functionality in every country or language. Check the specific Apple feature requirement for the language and region in which you will use it.

What this means at purchase time
- List the particular iOS 26 features you care about rather than treating “iOS 26” as one feature.
- Open Apple’s current requirement for each feature and check whether it says iPhone 15 and later or iPhone 16 and later.
- For Apple Intelligence, verify the model, language and region conditions separately.
- If a feature is important for work or accessibility, confirm availability before paying; eligibility can change by feature and geography.
The available evidence does not establish a guaranteed support end date for any of these models. A buyer seeking long-term use should verify Apple’s current compatibility requirements instead of relying on a guessed number of support years.

Battery: what Apple’s numbers do and do not tell you
| Model | Apple’s maximum video playback claim | Apple’s maximum streamed-video claim | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15 | Up to 20 hours | Up to 16 hours | Manufacturer specification, not an independent everyday-use test |
| iPhone 16 | Up to 22 hours | Up to 18 hours | Manufacturer specification, not a guarantee for your usage pattern |
| iPhone 17 | Apple reports a higher maximum than the 15 and 16; exact figure not stated in the reviewed comparison | Not stated in the reviewed material | Do not convert the comparison statement into an invented hour count |
“Up to” is important. Apple’s figures are controlled manufacturer estimates, not a promise that every owner will get that many hours between charges. Brightness, mobile signal, games, camera use, background activity, streaming quality and battery condition can all change actual endurance. Use the figures to identify the direction of the difference—16 is rated above 15, and 17 above both in the comparison—not to predict your personal screen-on time.
Charging and accessory compatibility
Documented iPhone 15 figures
Apple specifies MagSafe wireless charging up to 15W and Qi wireless charging up to 7.5W for the iPhone 15. The maximum depends on using compatible charging equipment and the appropriate conditions. A separate charger or adapter is optional; it is not automatically a required purchase simply because you buy the phone.
What to check for the 16 and 17
The supplied specifications establish the iPhone 15 charging figures but do not provide equivalent figures for the iPhone 16 or iPhone 17. Before buying either newer model, verify the current Apple technical specification for your exact model and region if charging speed is a deciding factor.
Audit what you already own
- Identify whether your existing wireless pad is MagSafe-compatible or standard Qi.
- Check the output rating of your wall adapter and whether it meets the phone maker’s current requirements.
- Confirm that cases, stands and car mounts fit the exact model; a 6.3-inch phone may not fit an accessory designed around a 6.1-inch body.
- Include the cost of any needed adapter, cable or mount when comparing offers.
Price and value: a method that works without live pricing
No current local price, inventory snapshot or seller comparison was established for this article. That means a responsible recommendation must be conditional. The iPhone 17 is the feature leader, but it is not automatically the best deal; the iPhone 15 can be the smartest purchase if its discount is large enough.

Compare like for like
- Match storage. A lower headline price can simply reflect less storage.
- Match condition. Compare new with new, or refurbished with refurbished. Record battery-health terms and cosmetic grades for used phones.
- Match seller protections. Check the return window, warranty, repair policy and whether the seller is authorized in your market.
- Check the carrier requirement. A low monthly payment may depend on a long contract, a specific plan or an eligible trade-in.
- Apply trade-in credit carefully. Separate an instant discount from bill credits that arrive over many months.
- Calculate the total. Add taxes, delivery, accessories and any activation or financing costs.
Use the price gap as a decision tool
There is no universal threshold because regional prices and storage tiers differ. Instead, ask what the extra money buys you. The 17 premium pays for the listed larger display, ProMotion, Always-On display and the newest standard-model position. The 16 premium over the 15 pays for higher Apple battery estimates and access to features specified for iPhone 16 and later. If those benefits do not justify the actual gap, keep the cheaper model.

Choose the iPhone 17 when the display is a priority
Pick the 17 if you read, scroll, watch video or use widgets often and specifically want the 6.3-inch panel, ProMotion and Always-On display. It is also the least compromised choice for a buyer who wants the newest standard model and does not want to revisit feature eligibility soon.
Choose the iPhone 16 for balanced spending
The 16 fits buyers who want a current model, a 6.1-inch size and the higher battery estimates without paying the full 17 price. It becomes especially attractive when a retailer’s 17 discount is small enough that the display features do not offset the difference.
Choose the iPhone 15 for a genuinely lower total cost
The 15 is appropriate for ordinary phone use when the price reduction is substantial, the storage and condition are comparable, and you have checked that none of the iOS 26 or Apple Intelligence functions you need require a newer model. It is not the right choice merely because it has the lowest sticker price.

The 15 and 16 share Apple’s listed 6.1-inch display size, while the 17 is listed at 6.3 inches. Someone who values a more manageable feel may prefer the 16 over the 17 even if the newer phone has more features. Conversely, a buyer who finds small text tiring may value the 17’s larger panel more than a modest saving.

Is the iPhone 17 worth it over the iPhone 16?
It is worth considering when the price difference is acceptable and you will use the display advantages: 6.3 inches, ProMotion and Always-On display. The comparison also places the 17 above the 16 on maximum video playback, although the exact 17-hour figure is not stated in the available material.
It is harder to justify when you prefer a 6.1-inch phone, do not care about the listed display features, or would have to compromise on storage, warranty or seller quality to afford it. In that situation, the 16 gives you the newer-model feature eligibility and higher stated battery maximums without paying for benefits you will not use.
Is the iPhone 15 still worth buying?
Yes, but only under clear conditions: the discount must be meaningful, the phone must meet your storage and condition requirements, and you must verify feature eligibility. Its Apple-rated maximums are lower than the 16’s, and Apple’s iOS 26 guide identifies a group of features that require iPhone 16 or later.

A step-by-step buying checklist
- Write down your must-have features. Include screen size, ProMotion, Always-On display, Apple Intelligence functions, streamed-video endurance and wireless charging.
- Check Apple’s current compatibility notes. Confirm each software feature for your model, language and region.
- Pick a storage tier. Compare all three phones at the same capacity before looking at discounts.
- Record the full offer. Note model, storage, condition, seller, warranty, return window, carrier, financing and trade-in terms.
- Verify the price date. Promotions and inventory change; write down when you checked the offer.
- Inspect accessory needs. Check your charger, wireless pad, case and mount against the exact phone.
- Apply the decision rule. Buy the 17 for its display and newest standard-model features, the 16 for balanced cost and eligibility, or the 15 only for a sufficiently large saving.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating manufacturer battery claims as personal test results. The quoted hours are “up to” estimates from Apple.
- Assuming Apple Intelligence is identical everywhere. Eligibility varies by model, feature, language and region.
- Comparing different storage or condition grades. That can make an older phone appear artificially cheaper.
- Ignoring seller and carrier terms. A trade-in credit or financing plan can change the real cost and your obligations.
- Assuming missing specifications. The reviewed material does not state an exact iPhone 17 battery hour figure or equivalent charging figures for the 16 and 17.
- Buying for a guessed support deadline. No guaranteed support end date is established here; check Apple’s current compatibility requirements.
- Forgetting the size difference. The 17’s 6.3-inch display may be desirable for viewing but less comfortable for someone who prefers a 6.1-inch phone.
Bottom line for your purchase
Start with the iPhone 17 if you want the most advanced standard-model display and can pay its current asking price without compromising storage or seller protection. Move to the iPhone 16 when it delivers the features you need at a clearly lower total cost. Move to the iPhone 15 only when its discount is substantial and you have confirmed that its software eligibility and charging setup fit your plans. Recheck the exact regional offer on the day you buy, because that price—not the model name alone—determines the value.
