Choose the iPhone 15 for a smaller, lighter phone with the same core 48 MP main camera, Dynamic Island, and USB-C. Which model is better for size and everyday handling?
The iPhone 15 is the more manageable choice. It is 12.3 mm shorter and 5.1 mm narrower than the Pro Max, and at 171 g it weighs 50 g less. Those differences matter if you prefer a phone that takes up less room in a pocket or feels lighter in your hand.

The Pro Max’s 6.7-inch display gives you more viewing area for videos, reading, and onscreen content, but its 221 g weight and larger dimensions are a meaningful trade-off. Both screens are Super Retina XDR OLED and include Dynamic Island; ProMotion adaptive refresh up to 120 Hz and Always-On display are listed for the Pro Max, not the iPhone 15.

How do the cameras differ?
Both phones have a 48 MP main camera and a 12 MP ultra-wide camera. The defining camera difference is the Pro Max’s additional 12 MP telephoto camera, which offers 5x optical zoom at 120 mm. That gives it dedicated optical reach for subjects that are farther away. Apple described the 5x telephoto camera as exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max within the iPhone 15 lineup in its September 2023 launch announcement.
The iPhone 15 does not list a dedicated telephoto camera, so it is the less suitable of these two if optical reach is a priority. These specifications describe camera hardware; they do not establish a measured difference in overall image quality.

Do the chip and USB speeds make a practical difference?
The Pro Max uses Apple’s A17 Pro with a six-core GPU, while the iPhone 15 uses the A16 Bionic with a five-core GPU. The listed specifications show a newer chip and one additional GPU core in the Pro Max, but they are not a direct performance benchmark and do not quantify how much faster a particular task will be.
Both phones have USB-C, but their wired data-transfer specifications differ: the Pro Max supports USB 3 up to 10 Gb/s, while the iPhone 15 supports USB 2. If you regularly move large files over a wired connection, the Pro Max has the higher stated transfer capability. USB-C alone does not mean the two models offer the same data speed.

How do Apple’s battery estimates compare?
Apple lists up to 29 hours of video playback for the iPhone 15 Pro Max and up to 20 hours for the iPhone 15. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent real-world test results; actual battery life can vary with use and conditions. Treat the figures as a comparison of Apple’s stated playback claims, not a guarantee of how long either phone will last in your routine.
What was the launch price difference?
At U.S. launch in September 2023, the iPhone 15 Pro Max started at $1,199 with 256 GB of storage, while the iPhone 15 started at $799 with 128 GB. That is an original starting-price difference of $400, with twice the base storage on the Pro Max. Apple announced the Pro Max price in its Pro launch announcement and the iPhone 15 price in its iPhone 15 launch announcement.

Which iPhone should you choose?
| If your priority is… | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| A larger screen, smoother scrolling, or Always-On display | iPhone 15 Pro Max | 6.7-inch display with ProMotion up to 120 Hz and Always-On |
| Lower weight and easier handling | iPhone 15 | 171 g and a smaller 6.1-inch display |
| Optical reach for distant subjects | iPhone 15 Pro Max | Dedicated 5x telephoto camera |
| Faster stated wired data transfer | iPhone 15 Pro Max | USB 3 up to 10 Gb/s rather than USB 2 |
| Lower original U.S. launch starting price | iPhone 15 | $799 versus $1,199 in September 2023; base storage differed |
| Longer Apple-stated video playback | iPhone 15 Pro Max | Up to 29 hours versus up to 20 hours, per Apple’s estimates |
There is no universal winner: the Pro Max adds screen, camera, transfer-speed, and stated playback advantages, while the iPhone 15 prioritizes a smaller, lighter form. Choose based on which of those differences you will actually use.
