Dummy iPhone 15 units shown on August 30, 2023, pointed to five muted colors for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, plus four subdued titanium-style finishes for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The broad prediction was right: Apple later announced the same standard-model color family and a closely matching Pro palette, although its official names differed and the rumored dark-red Pro finish never shipped.
What leaked in August 2023
Leaker Sonny Dickson shared images of dummy iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max units on August 30, shortly before Apple’s September launch. These were non-functioning mockups, not retail phones. Their practical purpose is to give case makers and other suppliers approximate dimensions, camera placement, buttons, ports, and exterior finishes before launch.
The units therefore offered useful evidence about Apple’s color direction, but not proof of the exact production coating, texture, durability, or official name. Contemporary coverage of the units is available at 9to5Mac, while an earlier hands-on report explains the dummy-model context at MacRumors.
Leaked colors for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
The standard-model mockups appeared in five colors:

- Designated Purpose 1 – Substitute your real cell phone to kids or children that want a phone so badly but is still too young to have one. So we amended the material into ABS plastic instead of Glass to make it a safer item for kids.
- Designated Purpose 2 – Party surprises, phone collection, children toys or other entertaining purposes.
- Designated Purpose 3 – Cell phone store / Phone accessories store display use, thanks to its metallic frame and identical weight, it is perfect to try out phone cases or other accessories.
- Material – Premium aluminum frame and ABS plastic screen, identical weight as original phone, keys could be pressed but sim card slot could not be pulled out.
- This product is merely designed and distributed for purposes listed above, it does not work, does not come with original retail package or any accessories.
- Black
- Green
- Blue
- Yellow
- Pink
Photos made the finishes look notably pale or desaturated. In a later video, the blue could look almost white under some lighting, and the yellow appeared softer than the iPhone 14’s brighter spring-yellow finish. Those are visual impressions from particular mockups and cameras, not measurements of Apple’s final glass color; the follow-up video was reported by 9to5Mac.
Some early articles used “white” or “starlight” informally when describing the light-looking units. Apple’s eventual standard-model names were blue, pink, yellow, green, and black for both the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, as confirmed in its launch announcement: Apple Newsroom.

Leaked colors for iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max
The Pro mockups were described as:
- Space black
- Silver
- Blue
- Gray or “titan gray”
The descriptions were attempts to identify appearances before Apple published its labels. The Pro models replaced the previous stainless-steel frame with titanium, and the leaked units showed edges in that new material’s restrained color range. Apple’s final names were black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium for both Pro sizes: Apple Newsroom.
Pre-launch reports connected the cooler palette with titanium finishing and with possible coating, yield, production-time, or cost considerations. Apple did not say that titanium made bright colors impossible, so those manufacturing explanations remain reported possibilities rather than confirmed technical limitations. The color shift and the changing red rumor were covered by MacRumors.

What happened to the crimson Pro rumor?
Earlier reports said Apple was considering a dark-red, crimson, or burgundy iPhone 15 Pro finish. That claim appeared in February and July coverage, including 9to5Mac and another 9to5Mac report. By late August, reporting said the red option had been dropped or was inaccurate. Apple ultimately released blue, black, white, and natural titanium shades instead; no crimson Pro model was announced.
What the dummy units showed beyond color
The mockups also reinforced several physical-design expectations without serving as a complete iPhone 15 design review:

- USB-C appeared across all four models, a change later confirmed at launch.
- The Pro units showed titanium-colored side edges.
- The Pro camera area looked larger, with revised exterior contours.
- The standard aluminum-and-glass treatment remained visibly different from the Pro construction.
Those details mattered to accessory companies. Three-dimensional models were circulated so cases, screen protectors, displays, and retail materials could be prepared before Apple unveiled working phones. MacRumors documented that supply-chain use in its report on 3D-printed iPhone models.

A dummy leak is strongest for physical proportions and broad color families, and weaker for exact hue and finish. Use these checks when evaluating one:

- Look for repetition. A color appearing across multiple physical sets, supply-chain reports, and images is more credible than one isolated render.
- Separate appearance from branding. “Silver,” “gray,” “natural titanium,” and “white titanium” can overlap visually but are not interchangeable Apple names.
- Question lighting. Studio lights, camera processing, and reflections can make a pale blue look white or a gray finish look silver.
- Do not infer saturation from plastic. Mockups may use inexpensive paint, printed surfaces, or coatings unlike the production phone.
- Wait for the announcement. In this case, the family of colors was substantially correct, but the labels and the rumored alternative were not fully correct.
Concept renders are a weaker category still: they are illustrations based on leaks or guesses, not physical evidence. A color can also be tested internally and abandoned before retail production.
What Apple actually released
| Models | Dummy-unit descriptions | Apple’s final names |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus | Black, green, blue, yellow, pink | Black, green, blue, yellow, pink |
| iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max | Space black, silver, blue, gray/titan gray | Black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, natural titanium |
The final announcements close the loop: Apple’s standard-model release and Apple’s Pro release. The leak was directionally accurate, not a guarantee that every photographed shade or nickname would match a retail phone.
What the colors mean for buyers and accessory shoppers
Cases and model fit
Choose accessories by exact model, not just by “iPhone 15.” iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max are separate case categories. A clear case preserves the visible finish, while an opaque case makes the underlying color largely irrelevant. Apple’s accessory catalog is at apple.com/shop/iphone/iphone-accessories.
Material differences
The standard models use their own aluminum-and-glass exterior treatment, while the Pro models use titanium. A leaked color does not establish camera performance, battery life, scratch resistance, resale value, or regional stock.
Buying older-generation stock
Because the iPhone 15 generation is no longer Apple’s current generation in 2026, compare discounted remaining stock with refurbished devices, warranty coverage, and expected software-support life. Current prices and availability vary and are not established here. Apple’s buying page is apple.com/shop/buy-iphone; trade-in estimates depend on model, storage, condition, and timing at apple.com/shop/trade-in.
