The iPhone 16 is two generations newer than the iPhone 14, with a faster-generation chip, a brighter-rated display, a higher-resolution main camera, USB-C, and support for Apple Intelligence. Both are in the 6.1-inch OLED class, but the price comparison is less straightforward: a September 2026 report put the iPhone 16’s U.S. starting price at $899, while no like-for-like current iPhone 14 price is established here.
At a glance: the main differences
| Specification | iPhone 14 | iPhone 16 | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introduced | 2022 | 2024 | The iPhone 16 is two generations newer. |
| Display | 6.1-inch-class OLED; 2,532 × 1,170 pixels, 460 ppi; up to 800 nits typical and 1,200 nits HDR peak | 6.1-inch-class OLED; 2,556 × 1,179 pixels, 460 ppi; up to 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits HDR peak, and 2,000 nits outdoors; Dynamic Island | The newer model has higher Apple-rated brightness and a different front interface. The cited specifications do not establish a high-refresh-rate display for either. |
| Chip | A15 Bionic | A18 | The newer chip enables Apple Intelligence support on iPhone 16; no matched benchmark is available to quantify speed differences. |
| Rear cameras | 12MP main and 12MP ultra-wide | 48MP Fusion main and 12MP ultra-wide; 2× optical-quality crop and macro capability | iPhone 16 adds camera options and main-camera resolution; megapixels alone do not guarantee better photos. |
| Apple video playback estimates | Up to 20 hours of video playback; up to 16 hours streamed | Up to 22 hours of video playback; up to 18 hours streamed | These are Apple estimates, not independent test results or a promise of an individual user’s battery life. |
| Port and controls | Lightning; Ring/Silent switch | USB-C; Action button and Camera Control | The change affects cable compatibility and how you access controls. |
| Water resistance | IP68, lab-rated to a maximum depth of 6 m for up to 30 minutes | IP68, lab-rated to a maximum depth of 6 m for up to 30 minutes | The rating is not a guarantee against liquid damage. |
Specifications are from Apple’s iPhone 14 technical specifications and iPhone 16 technical specifications. Apple’s diagonal-size convention accounts for small differences in exact screen measurements despite both models being described in the same broad size class.

How different are their screens and everyday performance?
Display: brighter ratings, same broad size class
Both phones use OLED displays in the 6.1-inch class, with a listed density of 460 pixels per inch. Apple rates the iPhone 16 for higher typical brightness and higher HDR peak brightness, and specifies up to 2,000 nits outdoors. It also replaces the iPhone 14’s front layout with Dynamic Island. These figures describe Apple’s specifications; they do not establish how much brighter the phone will look in every setting.

Chip and Apple Intelligence
The iPhone 14 has an A15 Bionic chip; the iPhone 16 has an A18. The practical distinction extends beyond the chip generation: Apple lists iPhone 16 as supporting Apple Intelligence, subject to language and regional restrictions. The iPhone 14 is not listed as an Apple Intelligence-capable model in the cited comparison. Check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence availability information for supported languages, regions, and features before buying for a particular capability.

No matched performance testing is available here, so a precise speed advantage cannot be stated. For a purchase decision, the clearer difference is feature eligibility rather than an unsupported percentage claim.
What changes in the cameras?
The iPhone 14 has two 12MP rear cameras: a main camera and an ultra-wide. On iPhone 16, the main camera is a 48MP Fusion camera, paired with a 12MP ultra-wide. Apple also lists a 2× optical-quality crop and macro capability for iPhone 16.

Those additions give the newer model more flexibility for framing and close-up shots. Resolution is only one part of image quality, however; the specification difference alone does not prove that every photo will look better.
Battery estimates and charging compatibility
Apple’s stated playback figures
Apple estimates up to 20 hours of video playback and 16 hours of streamed video for iPhone 14, compared with up to 22 hours and 18 hours respectively for iPhone 16. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent measurements. Actual runtime depends on use and conditions, so the two-hour difference in each listed category should not be treated as a guaranteed real-world improvement.

Lightning versus USB-C
iPhone 14 charges through Lightning; iPhone 16 uses USB-C. iPhone 14 comes with a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, while iPhone 16 comes with a USB-C charging cable. Neither includes a power adapter. If you already own charging accessories, check the connector you use before switching: a USB-C adapter or cable alone does not make the iPhone 14’s Lightning port into USB-C. Apple describes the included contents on its iPhone comparison page.
How much more does iPhone 16 cost?
A responsible price comparison needs the same country, storage capacity, condition, seller type, and date. MacRumors reported on September 9, 2026, that the U.S. iPhone 16 starting price had become $899 following Apple announcements. That is a reported starting price, not proof that a particular configuration is currently in stock at that price. No comparable current iPhone 14 price is established here, so there is no reliable current dollar difference to calculate.

For a useful quote, compare listings for the same storage and market, and distinguish new, refurbished, and used phones. Check seller, carrier-lock status, condition, warranty, and availability as well as the advertised price. A used or refurbished iPhone 14 is not directly comparable to a new iPhone 16.

Which one should you choose?
Choose iPhone 16 if the upgrades matter to you
- You want USB-C and a newer phone interface with the Action button, Camera Control, and Dynamic Island.
- You value the brighter Apple-rated display, added camera options, or Apple Intelligence eligibility.
- You are replacing an older phone and want the newer of these two hardware generations.
Consider iPhone 14 if its verified price is substantially lower
- You are comfortable with Lightning and do not need Apple Intelligence.
- The phone’s condition, storage, warranty, and seller meet your requirements.
- Its actual offer is low enough to justify choosing the older hardware and feature set.
There is no evidence-based universal savings threshold: decide whether the features you would give up are worth the difference between the specific offers you can buy. Also choose a case made for the exact model; similar screen size does not establish case compatibility.
Best Value
- The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
Features that depend on location or service
Apple lists satellite Emergency SOS and Crash Detection among the iPhone 14 generation’s features. The iPhone 16 adds connectivity specifications including Wi-Fi 7, a newer ultra-wideband generation, and Thread support. Availability or operation for some features can depend on geography, language, service status, or software version. Check Apple’s specifications and regional availability for the market where you plan to use the phone rather than assuming every listed capability is available everywhere.
Both models have an IP68 rating based on laboratory testing up to 6 metres for 30 minutes. Apple cautions that resistance can diminish with wear and that liquid damage is not covered by warranty. Treat the rating as a defined test result, not as permission to expose either phone to water.
