iPhone 14 Pro vs. 15 Pro: What Changed, and Which Should You Buy?

The iPhone 15 Pro adds USB-C, titanium, an Action button and A17 Pro, while the display, camera resolution and Apple-rated video playback figures are closely matched. Both launched in the U.S. at $999.

The iPhone 15 Pro’s main advantages over the iPhone 14 Pro are USB-C, a lighter titanium frame, a configurable Action button and a newer chip. Their headline display features and Apple-rated video playback figures are the same. At U.S. launch, both started at $999, so that was no price difference—but it does not tell you what either costs now.

What are the key differences?

Is the display or camera a major reason to choose one?

The basic display experience is closely matched: both are 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR screens with Dynamic Island, Always-On display and ProMotion. The 15 Pro is not a move to a larger screen or a different headline display feature set.

Both have a 48MP main camera. Apple introduced the 14 Pro as its first iPhone with a 48MP main camera and lists a 48MP main camera for the 15 Pro as well. Resolution alone does not establish a large difference in image quality; the cited specifications do not provide a like-for-like independent camera test.

What do USB-C and the Action button change?

USB-C on the 15 Pro

The 15 Pro replaces the 14 Pro’s Lightning connector with USB-C. Apple lists charging, DisplayPort video output and USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gb/s for the 15 Pro. That top data rate requires a suitable USB 3 cable; a USB-C connector by itself does not guarantee USB 3 speeds. Apple lists adapters separately.

If your cables and accessories are already organized around Lightning, changing ports may be a trade-off rather than an automatic benefit. If you want one connector for more devices or regularly move large files over a wire, USB-C may be useful.

Action button instead of Ring/Silent switch

The 14 Pro has a Ring/Silent switch. On the 15 Pro, the Action button can be configured as a shortcut, giving it more possible uses than a dedicated switch. Whether that is an improvement depends on whether you value a customizable control or prefer the familiar direct switch.

Is the iPhone 15 Pro faster or longer-lasting?

The 15 Pro has Apple’s A17 Pro chip, one generation newer than the 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic. That identifies the hardware difference, but the specifications cited here do not establish a particular real-world speed increase. Choose based on the applications and tasks you use, rather than assuming a specific performance gain.

Apple rates both phones for up to 23 hours of video playback and up to 20 hours of streamed video. These are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee of everyday battery life or results from a controlled comparison; actual battery life varies.

Did the 15 Pro cost more at launch?

No, not at the U.S. starting price: Apple announced a $999 starting MSRP for each model, the 14 Pro in 2022 and the 15 Pro in 2023. This is a historical launch-price comparison, not a current price quote. The models belong to earlier generations, and current used or refurbished prices depend on market, seller, storage, condition and availability. No current listing price is established here.

When comparing offers, match storage and check battery health, cosmetic condition, carrier lock, warranty, return period and compatibility with your region. A lower asking price is not a like-for-like deal if one phone has less storage, a weaker battery or different seller protections.

Should you upgrade from the iPhone 14 Pro?

The 15 Pro may suit you if

  • You want USB-C, particularly for consolidating cables or making wired data transfers with a suitable USB 3 cable.
  • You would use the configurable Action button.
  • You prefer the 15 Pro’s titanium frame and its listed weight of 187 g.
  • You have a specific reason to choose the newer A17 Pro chip.

Keeping the 14 Pro may make sense if

  • You are satisfied with its display and camera fundamentals.
  • Lightning works for your existing accessories and workflow.
  • The 15 Pro’s particular changes do not solve a problem you have.

If you are buying either as a used or refurbished phone, base the decision on the actual device, matched storage and seller terms—not the old $999 launch price. For an owner of a working 14 Pro, the 15 Pro’s case is strongest when USB-C, the Action button, lower listed weight or the newer chip matters to you.
